Peter Herbst Fishing
Australia
Приєднався 2 жов 2021
Fishing started at a very early age for me as I grew up on banks of Albert river where we fished and crabbed firstly from our property. Soon after, carting the 6hp Johnson and fuel tank from the house to the tinny tied to the bank soon became a weekly occurrence.
Many years of fishing both with bait and lures followed in the SEQ area.
For the last 20yrs I have worked in the fishing industry, both in wholesale and retail which has given me a good understanding of fishing tackle.
Beyond my work places, I also wrote hundreds of magazine articles, numerous presentations and for the last 2 years, UA-cam videos.
In these videos I target the species I enjoy catching casting lures using the latest of equipment and electronics in my 5m Ozy built Bassco boat.
Hope you enjoy the fishing!

Fishing a MEGA tide!
Covering ground was the key to success when fishing a mega tide in Moreton Bay.
Strategic launch spot to avoid rough water paid off to keep me dry and planning water depths that might hold fish with insane amounts of current.

Summer Smorgasbord in the Shallows/Fishing Australia Day
Переглядів 8 тис.День тому
Australia Day was a busy day on the water with great weather and a fair amount of sunshine! The deepwater and pelagics were quiet but fishing the shallows produced another of species and by the end, my esky held some of the best feeds you find from MORETON BAY.
Magic Moreton Bay/Chasing Mackerel

When the mackerel are on you have to take advantage, as they don't show up every year. This year seems to be one of the better years and I love catching and eating these speedsters when ever I get the chance.
WHAT a start to the fishing year!! Moreton bay 🔥
Переглядів 7 тис.21 день тому
The first fish for the year was a cracker! I started the day right down the bottom end of MORETON BAY and worked my way up both fishing the bottom and the top.
Moreton Bay shallows producing!

Mixed results fishing at the end of 2024. The shallows have fished fairly well early in the morning but the jew and mackerel have somewhat disappeared around the new moon cycle.
XMAS Spottie Mackerel in MORETON BAY/ Turtle Rescue!
Переглядів 8 тис.Місяць тому
This week I fish shallow to start the day off but find the fishing a bit slow. Doing this, I stubble upon a turtle tangled up in a crab pot rope. Despite not having a knife in the boat, I was able to free the turtle and keep the crab pot intact. After this, I head wide to look for mackerel and find them I did!
What's biting after the rain in MORETON BAY?
Переглядів 23 тис.Місяць тому
It finally stopped raining! So I headed out to see how the water was and what was on the chew. Happy to report the water isn't too bad in some areas and there's enough going on with the fish to keep me happy!
Fishing the BRISBANE river and MORETON bay
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
Bad weather and heaps of rain have made getting out a little tricky. The Brisbane river can be great fishing at this time of year, so I keep going there in hope of some fun fishing. It’s also a protected option on a southerly wind… This week I have a fish in the river then send it in the bay in a bit of wind to see what’s happening out there.
Who said Northerlies are BAD for FISHING?
Переглядів 6 тис.2 місяці тому
Far from Ideal conditions but sometimes you just gotta go fishing!! Wind, rain and work have not allowed me to be on the water as much of late and with a bad forecast coming up, I just had to go hit the bay up for a fish. The wind was worse than forecast but it was well worth the effort as there were plenty of fish in close and I had a productive yet short session in Moreton Bay.
Monduran 121cm giant Barramundi
Переглядів 4,8 тис.2 місяці тому
The Barra bug is real and this week I'm back at Monduran dam. The fishing gods were nice to me this trip and I was able to smash my PB Barramundi out of the pack with an epic sized fish. Doing it in the daylight with a mate and my favourite technique was the icing on the cake!
Back Fishing the Brisbane River
Переглядів 16 тис.2 місяці тому
This week I head to the port of Brisbane to see what happening there as I have over-looked it for some time. Fishing was tough but a managed a couple fish. Little extra video too this week from a recent session chasing some big shallow water Threadfin Salmon.
Straight On The Fish! Hot trip to Monduran.
Переглядів 10 тис.3 місяці тому
With the Barra bug biting me hard, I just had to tow the boat up again on my next work trip. My mate Damien come up as well with his boat so we could cover more water if we needed and he was going to stay longer than I was. It didn't take long to find some fish and the 1st fish hit the deck after only 1 hour of fishing. The fishing continued from there all arvo with one of the best bites I had ...

Bucket list fishing for Barramundi / MONDURAN DAM
Переглядів 8 тис.4 місяці тому
This week I quickly stop at Monduran Dam on a work trip up north. This was one of my best trips as I fished a small area, caught some crackin fish and din't fish too hard or long. I highly recommend fishing the dam as its a great place to be on the water with the opportunity of catching some giant Barramundi!
Fishing MORETON BAY Reef Edges
Переглядів 6 тис.4 місяці тому
Short window good weather this week as northerly winds start of the spring season. Fishing was a bit tough and all the action around the early tide change. Had some wins and big losses fishing shallow with the light gear. Getting 'smoked' is half the fun of fishing the shallows of MORETON BAY as it's 'do or die' fishing!

Hey mate question what size weight do you use on your jig heads when the current is running like that I had a session in the bribe passage was getting a few squire had trouble getting the plastic down deep enough and still making the plastic present well
@@russellmcaleese3060 hi Russell, really depends on the depth mate. On this day in the shallows, I was using 1/6 to 1/4 jigheads and giving the lures plenty of slack line to allow them to sink.
Saw you out there on this particular day mate, didn't want to interrupt you with my loud 2 stroke. Great sesh for us too, drifting is the only way to fish as was going 3 knots drifting. Got a 60cm snapper and 58 GT, and some other small reefies. They were on.
@@dota2lol942 nice mate 👌
Mate I love your boat. Hopefully one day
@@nathanboulton7186 cheers mate, it’s a fun boat that I enjoy more the more I use it.

@@planetfonz don’t think so mate.
Some lovely fish yet again Peter!. Can I ask are bream not a good eating fish as you didn't keep any for the table? Was I right in hearing you use 4-8lb rods for that type of fishing?just looking to buy a few set ups ready for when we come out to Brisbane in July.👍
@@simontucker6747 cheers mate! Bream are pretty good eating but had plenty better eating fish in the esky. Plus I have a soft spot for big bream as they are very old fish. Yes mate, 4-8lb rod for the bream and up to 6-12lb for the snapper and sweetlip.
@Peter_Herbst_Fishing thanks so much for that mate👍.keep the great content coming,I'm learning loads from you👍
@ about 8:28 there is a large splash between the channel marker & the edge of the screen. The dolphins may have been on their way.
Dolphins are learning off the sharks maybe 🤣
Hi Pete, When working in such strong current (eg 10 min+ mark) you seemed to be retrieving line mainly against the current. I was under impression (probably wrong) that it was best to wind with current when using soft plastics. Can I ask your method in these conditions and weight of jigs etc ?
@@peters5806 generally I cast up current and bring lures back with the current, if I am working back with the current past the boat, I will give the lure lots of slack between hops to get it back to the bottom again. Increased weight and thinner line all aid this too.
Hey Pete, what's a longtong?
@@mattadventures25 long skinny fish with mega teeth and full of bones.
It's beautiful watching someone pro catching heaps of fish. I don't but probably I have spent more time and energy than you
@@mg6187 cheers mate 🙏
I like that you are a realistic bay fisherman, very humble . When you get a 46 cm snapper in the bay in my opinion your very accurate to say as you did it’s a cracking fish anything above 50 is a corker of a fish . When guys on fishing videos catch a sixty and say “ great pannie “ I always think , leave it out mate we’re not in Coffs lol . The dolphin was funny , I like dolphins so wishing one would piss off would be weird . Another cracker of a video . That’s an awesome boat . I’d love Pat on the sunny coast to build me a Waverider one day .
Nice catches 🎣 🙂

@@Peter_Herbst_Fishingthank you ! Yesterday was a nice day. Hope to see you out there one day
Great video 👏 i definitely watch to learn of your approach / technique and admire what results a great fisher can get ….i recall last year you tried some slow pitch jigs, curious if in the future you plan to try them again (20-40gr casting type) when you’re on a school of jews 😊 ever used or had luck with the Tokyo rig to catch jew ?
@@chrisw6981 cheers Chris, appreciate that mate! The fish have changed a little in the last year or so in that they are smaller schools and more stationary then they have been previously. My favourite way is to use a jig but unfortunately the fish behaviour has changed somewhat.
Another great video mate, love the sounder pics of the wreck. What do you generally find contrast and brightness levels should be set at with the Garmin in bay waters to get that clarity? I’ve just picked up the same one 👌
@@MatthewHawker-n9i cheers mate! Yeah, I adjust both settings through the day depending on depth, bottom type and water clarity.
Great video as always Pete! and I love to see the bit of struggle all fishos go through to show what its all about. Just wanted to ask what do you use to track the weather i have tried chasing these seemingly elusive fish in the bay and the weather has always changed or been wrong mostly at the last minute and do you even need to chase these fish on a incoming tide?
@@jordy1417 cheers mate! I look at windy, Seabreeze and Willy weather mate and expect the worst one 🤣.

Hey mate I am struggling to get my first spotty Mack and was just wondering what tides and a rough whereabouts your are finding these mackerel or what you look for to find these mackerel as you seem to be finding lots of these mackerel busting up
I think that might have been a yellow emperor mate - they go by a few names - Diploprion bifasciatum. Cracker day all round.
What's the etiquette with driving up to a school when other boats are already there?
@@simonbaigrie2485 think everyone would like to find there own school but in Moreton bay I don’t think that’s a realistic ideal. For me, as long as your not scaring the fish or getting close to someone who hooked up, beyond that it’s a judgment call really.
Hey mate, recently discovered your channel and absolutely love it. I’m new to fishing and was wondering if there’s any other lures you recommend. Looking to catch anything at this stage. (North Brisbane)
