    Mixed Filipina here! Any advice on knowing what I CAN do? My eyes aren’t as almond but it’s still pretty obvious, however I’m not seen as “Asian enough”, but if I tell people about my ethnicity they pull their eyes and start saying they know my language by saying “Ching-chong” so it’s a bit difficult to know what the boundaries are I definitely wrote this in a panic before seeing the whole video, so if I missed any answers to my question, let me know! ❤❤❤❤

    I realize how old this video is but I came across it today and found it super interesting. I have a genuine question about this, and maybe it's silly but I worry about it? I'm mixed - Chinese/Filipino/White. If I'm, say, using eyeliner to accentuate the features I naturally already have...if I'm not 100% Asian....is it okay or is it fishing/baiting? I'm not trying to look 'more' anything for the record.

      Bro, tou shouldn't care about this. Do whatever makeup you want. Makeup doesn't means you are asian fishing. As a russian person, i dont give a sh*t and do whatever makeup i want, even if some people think that's it's asian fishing. You can do makeup that makes your eyes look bigger and more curvy, if some asians feel oppressed because of it, then they are just sensitive. Sorry if it sounded kinda rude, im just mad that people think makeup is asian fishing.

    it has become a hard thick make up thing and hands down asians are the best at it fishing has nothing to do with it even thow make up does help to get more views so they could say the same thing to every women that goes heavy on make up as make up fishing even though make up has always been there thats why natural beauty is so rare now days on social media even the natural beauty girls go hard on make up in social media and this happened rigth after the viral videos of asian transformation skills with make up.

    Im full on mexican from what i know, but supposedly my eyes look "asian like" to people. (I might have monolids but im not 100%! So don't take my full word) i really am fond of what's called east-asian type makeup. People think I'm asian when they meet me due to my eyes and I fear that would play into people thinking I'm asian fishing. I wish to start using makeup soon so this is why I'm asking. The problem is that I'm really worried about people thinking I'm asian or asian fishing by the way my makeup would be. I don't mean to represent myself as asian since I do clarify I'm Latina and not east-asian to people when they ask. I plan on doing the east-asian style but making sure I don't make myself pale. (Which is another stereotype) My outfit does not represent stereotypical east Asian fashion or even trying to be east asian fashion. My type of fashion (I'm not sure what it is) can be considered by alt or something along the lines like that. I just want opinions from people who are Asians themselves to see if it's alright for me to do east-asian makeup on myself. I agree that makeup is not the full problem here as the stereotypes, the sexualization, and actually telling people your asian when you're not is the harm. But I still want to make sure I'm not doing any harm by doing this! Thank you for listening to me rant <3

    I'm totally mexican my mom and dad are mexican most of my family is mexican (I think I have A LOT of family so idk) and I have almond shaped eyes that look asian and a lot of people (mostly family and random kids on the street) used to call me "chinita" which means "chinese girl" when i'm not even asian and I grew up being bullied for my eyes at the point that I hated my eyes and I wanted to change them, I hated them but I couldn't do much about it, I finally have accepted my eye shape but a while ago I uploaded a photo on ig with an eye makeup that fits my eye shape, and people where just acussing me of asian fishing 😿 when I never said I was asian in my bio I literally said I was mexican and australian (born and raised in australia), I deleted the photo but some weird people kept sending me dms so I blocked them and made my account private

    Asian vs Euro eye modification goes way back, using both surgery and makeup. James Michener explored this in his books (and films), "The Bridges at Toko Ri" and "Sayonara" about U.S. soldiers in Japan after WWII thru the Korean War. One Japanese girlfriend of an U.S. Airman has her eyes surgically modified to appear rounder, which upsets him since he adored her exotic eyes. After WWII, many Allied soldiers took Japanese "war brides", as in Germany, mostly due to mating-economics since maybe 3x as many 20-something females as males in those countries after the slaughter. Similar economics continued U.S. soldiers taking SE Asian wives, especially when Clark Air Base in the Philippines was operational. Airmen found they could acquire a higher-quality mate than available to them in the U.S. Also attributable to cultural unawareness, with local ladies not recognizing an unschooled redneck, thinking all Americans are cultured. Works in reverse, with male tourists bragging of the hot girl (lady-boy?) they hooked-up with in Thailand (via cash), when if they knew the culture they might have dismissed them as trailer-trash in the U.S. Some Asians consider rounder Euro eyes (and big noses) exotic. Skin color has also been a fad. Until recently, ethnic Chinese in Indonesia avoided the sun (using umbrellas), treasuring their creamy-white skin, while Japanese (like Americans and Euros) considered brown skin favorable, meaning you lived a healthy outdoor life and vacationed in the tropics. Africans vary widely across the continent, with some having Asian-type eyes. Indeed, the Bushmen of SW Africa have faces which look a bit like everyone across the planet, perhaps because they are the origin of all people. It can be hard to tell a Bushman from a Malay or Melanesian, which makes sense because of similar climates plus genetic studies proved Melanesians migrated directly along the coast from Africa when the Java Sea was dry. But be careful discussing even obvious differences if in a job where your every word is scrutinized. A Hispanic teacher in L.A. was punished for pointing out (video'ed) to her class differences between north Asian eyes (upward slant) and Native American eyes (downward slant). Malay eyes are more horizontal. She didn't even get to pointing out differences in noses. Wider noses are shunned so much in southern China that some parents squeeze their kids noses to try to narrow them. American Natives have European noses, as do Ethiopians, often attributed to climate. Native American eyes prove useful in appearing sad that those low-class Euros infested their Continent to pollute the streams (ua-cam.com/video/h0sxwGlTLWw/v-deo.html). The actor was actually Sicilian. BTW, nobody here yet fussed about Marlon Brando portraying a Japanese in "The Teahouse of the August Moon". He apparently did have a Pacific fetish since he married the actress in "Mutiny on the Bounty", a real Tahitian princess. BTW, since Chinese in the U.S. are now claiming to be "people of color", when can I claim that too?

    hey! nepali girl here, not all asians have slanted, long or monolid eyes tho! i wish people would address this more too since asian refers to the whole community and not just those with east asian features. even i have been called out for asian fishing for doing dolly eye makeup when i am a dark skinned nepali with eyes not even slanted. i do feel like makeup is makeup and you can do it however you want, but when they start acting out stereotypes to go with the makeup that is when it becomes wrong. I always feel a bit awkward going out because my features are (in my opinion) white but according to my sister and some of my friends I look half Asian. To my mother and some of my family members, they sometimes mention how I could go anywhere in the world because my features are so racially ambiguous. My world history teacher (when I was a freshman in high school) believed me to be middle eastern/ Arab. That being said I really just never understood how I should feel about my features. How should I view my own race (I should mention my family is very European mixed with Native ancestors, including my great great grandfather who was part of a tribe). Sometimes I feel like my mere existence could be considered somewhat offensive (probably because my sister tells me every day "oh you look so Asian but you're white so you're an Asian fisher!") and I know a lot of people in my school both POC and white did not take kindly to my looks (especially considering my sister was very outspoken about our family's political views so people at my school thought: "oh hey here's a girl who looks Asian but she's actually white and her family is conservative! She must be ultra racist!") I dont even know why Im talking about this anymore but it can be so hard going outside based off of everything I've faced and never fitting in anywhere due to the fact that my features had to manifest differently than the rest of my family

    • @MeganZhang
      @MeganZhang Рік тому

      you are so valid for this and thank you so much for sharing :0 i feel like race identification is so complex bc what even is the concept of race :’) i have no authority to speak on this bc i am fully Chinese i think and identify very clearly in that way, but i really hope you don’t feel like your existence is offensive for not fitting into predefined societal categories :( you deserve to exist as who you are regardless!

    • @MeganZhang
      @MeganZhang Рік тому

      at a certain point, other peoples’ opinions get really damaging especially if they impose their own assumptions of you and treat you differently because of that. given what you’ve written here, i feel like you should talk more about your experience, and other people should listen and understand the nuances this brings into the entire conversation! i also don’t rly have an answer but overall please be confident and unapologetic about your identity :) this way, i think you will also be able to more easily find a community of people who resonate with and share your experiences. you got this!

    Im half Asian but have mostly white features. I grew up with my Asian friends and family members and they make me feel really insecure about how my eye or face shape is. I use makeup to enhance those features. People have told me that I’m Asian fishing when I’m just covering insecurities. Is it bad that I’m using makeup to help me feel better about myself????

    • @MeganZhang
      @MeganZhang Рік тому

      i don’t think its your fault that you have insecurities that stem from the people around you! in my opinion though, makeup should be something empowering that you use for positive reasons instead, and something you could practice instead is finding self love for your whiter features?

    • @MeganZhang
      @MeganZhang Рік тому

      also again, i hope you can have more confidence in your own identity as well! i don’t think its fair for people to tell you you’re asian fishing especially when you are literally half asian 😭 but it is good to listen if anyone has perspectives on how it might potentially be harmful?
