I always pay my respects at CWGC (and German cemeteries) paying special attention to Scottish regiments. In St Valery-en-Caux they still remember the 51st, the Saltire still flies. #wewillrememberthem An excellent video.

When I was 13 years old, I wrote to the commanding officer of the Black Watch and requested if I could join. First he said I was too young, and they only took the men from Scotland. But he sent me that small book, but I still have a short history of the BW that he sent to me. I am almost 70 and just did time in the US Marines. I do have the blood of Scotland running through my veins, but not enough

The Gordon Highlanders redeemed themselves? The 51st Highland Division were so far from Dunkirk that they had little or no chance of holding back the Germans. You never hear of what happened to the Division. Unless you’ve read some history of these brave and many of them young men. The Gordons never had to redeem themselves. Just an outstanding soldiers.

This is the first I've heard of it's religious origins. My grandfather who was in the regiment during WW2 was a Catholic of Irish descent so that was surprising. I am not sure exactly when, but at some point he was transferred into the Essex regiment. No big deal for him, but I vaguely remember watching a documentary about a 'mutiny' where many Sots refused such orders. Does anybody have any info on this?

    • @emstirling-is4nu

As fr as I know many were Catholic but they all blended well together as christians and brothers in arms. Many came from Catholic orphanages in he Lanarkshire area.

Wonderful account of the Gordon's history. any thanks to all contributors. Bravery beyond all expectations. I can recall the advance party of the Gordons arriving in Celle in early 1958 to replace the then !st Devons whonwere off to Linden to become the Devon and Dorsets. A slim hope .....but......are there any of the then children of the Gordons still, around from 1958 who came to Celle?

Apart from the repeated weird pronunciation, there is no British Army Bugle Call to Charge. The one used is the US Cavalry trumpet call!

No personal link whatsoever, other than that my son was at Aberdeen University! Many visits to Bridge of Don (where the depot was) and Aberdeen itself, where the old depot, long gone, at Mariscal Court was located. Terrific memorial in Aberdeen City Centre.

I'm a big fan of the Gordon Highlanders, but I have to comment on the part about Majuba Hill and the remark they were facing a superior number of Boer troops. At Majuba hill the numbers were about the same on both sides, the British lost to superior marksmanship and rifles, not numbers....

Thank you for this enlightening history. Both my father, Alex Mitchell and my uncle, Bill Mitchell, (both of Coatbridge), and my maternal grandfather, Thomas Morrison, (of Gartcosh), served as Cameronians. As a young boy I can remember a discussion between my father and uncle about the standing down of the regiment.
