Webinar: Interregional Transmission and Resilience
Featured Speakers: Derek Stenclik, Founding Partner, Telos Energy; Chair Andrew French, Commissioner at Kansas Corporation Commission; Laura Rauch, Executive Director of Transmission Planning, MISO; Vandan Divatia, Vice President Transmission Policy, Interconnections & Compliance, Eversource Energy
Moderator: Matt Schuerger, Senior Fellow, ESIG
Webinar Abstract: There is a growing need to ensure that electricity systems remain robust and adaptable in the face of future load growth, a changing resource mix, and a changing climate. Interregional transmission improves grid resilience by allowing regions to access diverse resources in neighboring regions unaffected by the same weather and load conditions. However, despite the potential benefits, current planning processes often overlook the resilience value of interregional transmission, focusing on local reliability solutions within only a small geographical region.
This webinar will share the findings of a new ESIG report that assesses interregional transmission capability nationwide and gives planners a framework for (1) assessing transmission’s adequacy and resilience benefits at a national scale and (2) prioritizing transmission investments that offer the greatest benefits for system resilience. We will hear from experts and leaders from different sectors of the electricity industry on the benefits and challenges of interregional transmission for grid resilience.

Hi everyone, it is interesting video. But could you please explane the frase in the picture in minute 30 "At times with the largest uncertainties the spread is larger hence the capacity that can be is reduced to maintain fitness". For me is unclear why capacity is reduced and for what.

Sorry I wanted to say '' the capacity that can be bid is reduced to maintain firmness". The firmness of what and how capacity that can be bid can affect that firmness? ❤

whats your take on you tube site Miltechntac claim that AEMO and CSIRO have not show, swept under the carpet by small phases for large true costs ahead for the tax payers ? that prices will only increase and not back off as predicted , that you have removed cheaper options from the discussion.

Towards the end of the presentation he mentioned that this market is flexible cuz the +ve cancels the -ve imbalances and the whole system is more efficient financially. But are they taking into consideration the losses between where the energy gets produced vs where its consumed across the entire western region? 😮

at 18:22, you talk how ercot models batteries but there are many models (steady state, dynamic, state estimator model, ATC engine model to compute transmission capability, etc) can you clarify WHICH model this is? it's not obvious

Consider timestamping these videos for engineers who need to get to the punch. Use the outline shown @ 5:39 with timestamps for starters. Listing of Anchillary services (and what the acronyms stand for) @ 8:43, challenges @25:47, key takeaways at 34:56; @41:11, monitoring for State of Charge & sending SOC info to SCADA: currently receive 3 telemetry points from BESS, current SOC, max limit at which the BESS will operate and what's the min limit at which they will operate to ensure enough charge being preserved. @ 44:50, Primary Frequency Response deadband set at 17MHZ and droop settings as low as1%, triggered at 59.85Hz with 250ms response time. @ 52:02, with ERCOT not actively managing SOC, what is the mechanism for monitoring and mitigating insufficient SOC? Currently it is purely monitoring using real-time info only

I don't know if you will read this, but at 22:03, you show dynamic response for systems with equal Xg/Rg=3 but wildly different SCRs (15 vs.3) yet the swing response is almost the same. How is that possible? Wilder swings make sense for the SCR=3 case but what explains the swings for SCR=15, all else being equal? Also at 29:22, you clearly state that the stronger the grid the wilder the oscillations but how is that possible? By definition, a grid is deemed "strong" when disturbances do not cause wild fluctuations, not just having a higher SCR value so your naming convention of what constitutes a strong grid is confusing (I'm based in the US)
