Do they last as long not covered?
@@iansmith621 in my experience they do. I've not noticed any changes in performance between pencils I have out on my desk and ones I keep stored in the original packaging, other than the fact I tend not to use the others as much because they aren't right in front of me lol
I love these colors and this set. Jean has hand picked colors that compliment her teachings and online art school. So sad to hear your review and I don’t hear criticism but lack of understanding of how Jean uses these colors. She teaches brand new beginners to advanced and professional watercolor artists. These colors in this master collection are perfect to use in those classes. They are also perfect to use in my own paintings. So much to learn from her.. I have never seen Jean mix her colors the way you are to judge her..personally I love these colors and this set. There is certainly the ability to buy individual Daniel smith colors the way you paint. Maybe that’s the way you could judge the colors And mix them .. or even better take one of her classes and see for yourself why she selected them. And not be ignorant of why these colors were selected.
@@janetlundstedt9350 these colors are a joke for any professional artists to be using. 4 of the colors aren't even light-fast or suitable for professional work. She doesn't care about these paints. It was an obvious cash grab. Plain and simple. I'm not ignorant just because I have a different opinion than you do. The mixing possibilities here are limited, most are multi-pigment convenient mixtures with cheap pigments and dyes, and several are fugitive. That's very valid criticism for a set labeled "master artists set." If you're looking for a review that just fangirls and over-hypes everything then you need to go elsewhere. There are plenty of channels that offer that kind of content for the sake of sponsorships and making money. My videos are always my honest opinion. Grow up and learn to accept opinions that differ from your own. Otherwise you'll find it very hard to live in this world.
Yes, quinacridone gold comparison!
Thanks for the great demo! Curious how well it holds peaks when painting very thick impasto. Most acrylics will sink and flatten once dry. So you need a thickening medium to hold peaks. Thanks in advance.
@@kiritsi100 these are some of the thickest, most structured acrylics for impasto techniques. I think you'd love these if that's your style. ☺️
@ thanks so much!
I love your videos because they encourage me to do my own experiments with color. Interesting that my experience with these same Ultramarine Blues is quite different. I find the WN tinting strength to be so weak I must use much more of it in mixes to get the color I want. Conversely I find the MG tinting strength to be so strong that I must much less of it in mixes. Sitting in the middle is DS. As you would expect, when I want granulation DS is my go-to. When I want a smooth application MG cannot be beat. I have and use both.
Good information. I collect as well as draw. I don't have a derwent set in my arsenal. I don't think they are the ones for me.
How to change batteries inside the electric eraser 😢..?!!
Oh my gosh your paintings are stunning! Been wanting to have this set. These paints are great for portraits.. i follow an Indian portrait artist his works are just wow and he only use these paints, actually I think he uses the classic ones.. ❤ I love this review... thank you
@@ohsfer11820 thank you so much for your kind words ☺️
I'm happy to see so many going the color pencil route. When I got started out in 1985 there were few pencil artist and even fewer varieties of pencils. I still have my original Berols and Faber Castels.
I had the choice of choosing either the full set of lightfast or holbein pencils and because i thought i could trust the lightfast more chose them . For me it was the biggest mistake of my life and i wasted over$400 on a set of pencils that i now know i absolutely hate. A large number of them weren't centred properly and many were affected by streakiness and what i would describe as clumping of the pigments like with poor quality oil pastels resulting in uneven lay down of colour in more heavy applications. Ive never been so disappointed as they felt sticky almost with the mars orange being the worst affected although many were. My daughter visited Japan and brought me home a few holbein to try and i actually cried when i felt how beautifully smooth they were with very even solid coverage and were centred perfectly. I made the mistake of being impulsive and not testing a couple first and am now stuck with a set that will just rot on the shelf I hate them so much. I have the polychromos and love them but wanted to extend my collection and saved for 2yrs to do that then believing all the reviews instead of testing first wasted all the money i had and it will take me another 2yrs to save up again to fix my mistake. Im so sad i believed the hype and am glad that someone else has mentioned that they found some colours streaky. Im also shocked to see that bloom / fogginess after a year and wouldn't want to use them because of that either, it's awful that they do that and definitely could cause problems for anyone selling their work. Very disappointed all round.
It's been an amazing day here.its been pencil heaven. My full sets of Luminance Pablos and Prismacolors have arrived. The Polychromos should be here any minute. Moving on up 😂
@@TravisBrady-wn8fr yay! I'm so excited for you. Isn't shopping for art supplies fun? Sometimes the best part is waiting for them to arrive ☺️ then I love sitting there at my desk swatching everything out and playing with them.
@nicolemartinart5819 I quit drawing in 1990. Worst regret of my life. The last couple years I've watched some UA-cam art videos and the fire was relit. Only now I have grown and matured. I have to say colored pencil is the funnest rabbit hole I've ever explored. Thanks for the inspiration.
@@TravisBrady-wn8fr best of luck 🤞 never give up on your artwork, it's always worth pursuing 😊
The consistency seems similar to OPEN Acrylics by Golden.
Could this be used on Neopastels?
@@patsydeal1898 do you mean prismacolor nupastels? Or the neocolor wax pastels?
Neocolor IIs are so much fun. It just bums me out that the most fun art media always seem to be the least lightfast.
@@bluewren65 yeah, unfortunately they aren't very permanent. And I struggle to use them in sketchbooks either because they are very soft and smudge easily.. so unless you use a sheet of glassine into between the pages, they smear pretty badly.
Hi just found you. I too have the out of sight out of mind thing. If I can't see it I don't use it. Clear stuff really helps me.
OPERA PINK is a fugitive color! It is bad, it will totally disappear from your painting within a year or less. I can’t believe she uses this color in her paintings. Moonglow is also fugitive! 🙄
@@grammiejones77 yep, and so is one other color in this set, the gold is a convenience mixture which contains a fugitive pigment
@@nicolemartinart5819I was hoping you understood that when I said I couldn’t believe “she”….i was talking about Jean Haines! lol lol
@@grammiejones77 I did. No worries 😊
Thank you for your suggestions! I sewed a roll-up pencil case for 166 pencils myself , and I like it, because it's huge, and I draw in my backyard or at home, in different rooms, or outside, so I can take it anywhere with me. I almost don't draw sitting at the table. I was surprised that you haven't shown a roll-up case.
5:28 Is this possibly due to discoloration over time? I would say, however, I had a similar experience recently with their Blue Apatite Genuine.
Thank you for your video but a lot of people use Alizarin Crimson.
@@jerseyjoe1677 they do, but it's a fugitive pigment and and they shouldn't, because it's not suitable for professional artwork you intend to sell. Van Gogh used it to paint red roses many years ago, now they are entirely white, and most people don't even realize they aren't supposed to be. Alizarin crimson genuine will fade rapidly when exposed to light, and I mean, you'll see it start to change within just a few weeks; fully gone within a few months in light-fast testing.
Thank you I think I will purchase permanent alizarin crimson
@@jerseyjoe1677 yes! I highly recommend the permanent version for sure 😊 but watch out for Daniel Smith's version, the pigment they use is NOT really permanent and fades rapidly in tints over 50% in dilution. My favorite permanent alizarin crimson is by m graham. And my light-fast testing has shown that it stays true.
@@nicolemartinart5819 appreciate your time. But I’m loyal to Winsor & Newton you know what I mean. Thanks again so much.
@@nicolemartinart5819 Thanks so much I was thinking of using Winsor & Newton brand I’ve been loyal to them . Thanks 😊 so much again. And for the quick response. I do not like when creators tell you to write stop in the comments and they don’t even like or comment on it. They just collect the money for getting more comments. You’re a nice person.
Thanks for your honesty, personally the Lyra rembrandt polycolor are far superior in lay down over the derwent light fast, yes lyra isn't 100 lightfast but that's OK in my book.
The one way you can get away with using these professionally is if you were to sell prints made with archival inks on 100% cotton paper and just don't sell the original.
@@bettertomorrow2625 excellent point ☝️ I agree.
Ma'am, not sure why you are apologizing to people you don't know. Spend your money the way you want to. Judicial use of the ban-hammer for people who abuse you is appropriate.
@@rosehavenfarm2969 I know it's my money, and I know it's not anyones place to judge how I spend it, but I just never want anyone to feel like im bragging or something, or to feel bad if they can't afford the same supplies. Maybe I do apologize a bit too much though 😂
I know this is an old video but I'm planning on saving up for these pencils eventually, they're next on my list along with some more Luminance and some back up Holbein pencils since I've been buying those open stock, but I really want the full set of these after only buying 3 of them. I think they're so beautiful and work so well with Luminance, Pablo, Holbein and Polychromos pencils. I have yet to try them with anything else yet, but I imagine waxier pencils like Prismacolor and Coloursoft or Chromaflow might not work quite as well as they don't work the best with my Artists pencils from Derwent, but maybe not since some people use them with the Drawing pencils which are waxier. Like I said, I haven't tried them with those yet, but I should since I do have some of those (other than Chromaflow). Anyways, I really want the box because it's so gorgeous and I keep all of my pencils in their tins/boxes so I thought I should actually treat myself and get the wooden box since I've never had one before and all of my Derwent tins show up to me super dented and unable to close no matter where I buy them from 😒. I'm only a colorist, I don't really do art much anymore, unfortunately, so I've been trying to convince myself I don't need these but I think I do, I just really love how they work with other sets I own and love and I think they round out some of them nicely too, like they have some colors I've always thought the Polychromos set was lacking, for instance. I liked hearing your initial opinions and seeing the pencils. Thanks!
I am a senior (77) on a very fixed income but I will buy color pencils before I buy food. (Did I say that out loud?)
@@paulamoors LOL! You sound just like the rest of us! There are some great budget pencils out there too just so you know, no need to go hungry. Warm wishes and best of luck to you on your art journey 😊 And thank you for watching 🙂
@@nicolemartinart5819 food is so over rated!!
Just like me
Love It ❤❤❤
I use all 3 or rather I don't like the Luminance it's so hard to get a reasonble solid color layer with them I rarely use them. I do love their colors , but here's where it ends for me.. I tested the polychromo's for almost 4 months and they all passed the test beside a pink color which faded a lot. I love Holbein the most, love, LOVE their colors and the way they draw. Derwent Lightfast is ok and have more natural colors then the Polychromo's The Polychromo's come in 2nd, some colors are scratchy but love their vibrancy but maybe sometimes too vibrant that it's somewhat unnatural. they work well with the work I'm producing!
im guessing the super strong hair gel is cheaper? I use Moco De Gorilla after a warm shower.
I really love your watercolour mixing videos. I have umpteen tubes in various brands because I don’t know how to mix everything. This is very, very helpful!
Thank you for watching 🙂
Hi Nichole. I just did the exact same test with my French Ultramarines. I was wondering if your DS French Ultramarine was mislabeled at the factory and it's their regular Ultramarine. Because mine is very saturated and leans more violet than my Winser and Newton French Ultramarine. And my W&N is my all time favorite in French Ultramarine because once its dried, it just appears brighter, cleaner and less dull. You know how that dull appearance happens when some pigments totally dry? A reason why I adore Cobalt Blue. I love my MGraham Ultramarine too because it doesn't lose as much of it's vibrancy either and sometimes you just need a more non granulating Ultramarine. I don't like granular flower petals or on baby's skin. I painted realistic infant portraits for several years. Now retired from that. PS, my Holbein French Ultramarine is the most violet and most granulating of all. My Schmincke French Ultramarine runner up. Still the most vibrant to me after all is dried is my W&N. Sooo beautiful !
As a new artist, I am confuse about everything you are saying. But it’s probably because I don’t really listen to most artists because they say these things but they don’t explain the reasons like you are. At the same time other artists do a lot more things. So now that I am paying attention which gets me confuse. Thank you for this video .
I have some of my pencils at my desk in the pastel boxes. There are stacked. Love them.
That's cool. Yeah I don't put out my pastel pencils either because I'm too afraid they might break since they are more fragile than a colored pencil
I am so with you. I don’t mind spending a lot on a set of oil pencils but I want them to be oil pencils not wax with 1% oil in casing. Hence a room full of pencils.😂😂😂
As I told my sister, I could do any drawing and coloring with about 36 pencils. But the little girl in me wants BIG boxes and lots of colors! And I have enough OCD to want my pencils in their box AND in the right order. Maybe one day I will outgrow that❤❤❤
LOL 🤣 I love this comment! Yes, you're so right, we don't need anywhere near this many colors. But we love them! Plus, I have "full set syndrome." Haha
I also love those original boxes, but as it is said in this video - they’re seriously impractical to use :(
HOw do you then use the daniel smith dried color? Wet the brush and pul some t the flat palette?
And they have low granulation in granulating colors.
These pencils do not appear in any other set - they are exclusives.
This is the most useful review I’ve seen in a long time. You provide so much objective information to support your subject opinions so there’s a lot to work with in drawing our own conclusions. Really excellent.
Thank you that was very helpful. Love the onion 😊
Thanks for this. I had difficulty trying to replace the rubber. No other site explained and showed what you have to do, yours did. Thanks again!
You're welcome 🤗
The price has already gone up by $20 or so. The picture of the cherries is gorgeous, btw.
Hi, i just started watercolour painting for about a year. I use Winsor and Newton Cotman when i first started, then i switched to Daniel Smith (which i love). I paint florals and after watching your vidoes on Mijello watercolours, i plan to buy them. I did some price comparison and found Mijello very affordable, compared to Daniel Smith. Do these Mijello pure pigment colours work well with florals? Thank you.
Hi there 👋 Excellent question. Yes I think they would be great for floral paintings but I do advise that you practice with them first before jumping right in on a full painting. Only because these watercolors are extremely pigmented, more so than Daniel Smith, and they have very vibrant colors. If you like to work in more pastel tones and light florals, you may find it a bit challenging to control the pigment load at first. Just remember to use a light touch and they will last you practically forever. Good luck 😊
I’d like to see how it works with oil pastels.
Not a beginners set for the reasons stated but I have to chime in to say that I’ve never seen another artist’s palette so closely match my own intuitive love for golden hour/evening colors as Jean Haines Master Artist Set. If an artist is able to control their values to allow for enough light in their painting this set is magical. (Substituting Quin pink for Opera pink)
Watch out for moonglow and Aussie red gold as well. Both are fugitive in lightfast testing. Thanks for your comment ☺️
@@nicolemartinart5819 Thanks. I plan on doing a lightfast test. Holbein Bright Rose WC was just recommended to me to replace Opera Pink but I’ll be testing that tube also. Appreciate your vigilant attitude because we do want the things we sell to remain true to what the buyer originally saw.
@@YosemiteLee what a lovely compliment. Thank you 😊
Thank you for this test, very interesting. I love them, too. So much fun with it. Like Gouache. I am looking forward to your Lightfast test 😊
I think you where full of crap
Any update on lightfast testing?
Yes. The videos are coming soon for my lightfast testing series. Results are in. Stay tuned
None of the yellow ochre’s / ochre is transparent no matter what brand like your showing, they go on opaque and muddy my water. I hate Ochre of any brand and throwing them all away. I’ll use Burnt Sienna.
Hi, I'm sorry to hear what happened to your old palette. I have a question about the accident: did you successfully saved the watercolours pigments when the ceramic went in pieces (to move them in a new palette)? Thx for your attention
Hi Can you please tell me which are the other companies that offer PR 242 ? I couldn't find information and if you can help me that will be great. Thank you very much.
