Cultivating A Daily Writing Practice: Praise and Gratitude For Everything
Creation begins with contraction. In the beginning there was the word, we read in the Old Testament story of creation. But for that Word to be spoken there had to be an intake. Childbirth begins with contractions. Anything we initiate will begin with a tightening, a gripping. This isn't bad. It simply is how life moves outward.
When we begin anything new, when we approach a new situation, or new writing, or painting, we feel this contraction. Maybe we call it apprehension, excitement, anxiety. The words we use are important to how we react to the sensation. But they are not what the energy is. The energy is simply gathering for release, for expression. The mistake we make is that we form negative ideas around this energy. We negate by saying I can't write, I'm not a writer. The further contraction of a contraction turns the energy in on itself. We may become blocked.
In this video, I discuss how to use praise and gratitude in our creative practice to help us assure that contraction doesn't get stuck but has an opportunity to become expression.

Writing as an offering? Maybe you've never thought about writing as an offering. But, "to bestow our creations, as Lewis Hyde writes in his book, The Gift, is the surest way to invoke the next." Creation is reciprocal. The more we create, the more creation flows to us, and wants to use us to create. We, in turn, show up and make with the energy flowing through us. When we give form to this ener...

This is such an illuminating reflection! I have been thinking of my creative process in a similar way, but as breathing - in and out. I was starting to feel anxious when I'd wake up and not feel full of story to write. But I've been alternating with contemplative reading on some days, and then after a few days of that, I'll wake up brimming with words and thoughts to write for my story. And it feels like breathing - I breath in for a bit, I take from the world around me, and it nourishes and energizes me. And I digest that, then have something to breathe out - to return to the world in the form of creation. Now, when I wake up with nothing to write yet, I can have faith that I will in time, and just need to breath in ideas and words a bit more. Knowing that I will exhale ideas and story in due course has helped me not be afraid of being empty. Maybe that can help as another way to think of things for someone dealing with similar worries. I share praise and gratitude to you for sharing your light - it helps me feel less alone on my creative journey. And I will remember to praise that around me too!

The writing promots in the middle of the video are genius, please never stop doing them! I personally need to find back to allowing for my inner world of imagination blossoming without judging it. And to be honest after years of purposefully callousing up my soul for the sake of self protection against emotional pain during a toxic relationship, I need to learn how to access my emotions again and allow for energetic fluctuation between me and the outer world, to allow to be open again, because I think this is paramount for the creative process. When I feel alive inside and can feel my emotions and allow for my inner world to blossom, I feel as if I am surrounded by my creative process, as if I live in it and it is part of me and my world. I feel the warmth and connection with it in my heart. When I am closing all of this off, THAT is when I lose touch with this feeling, and when I merely stare at the blank page without a single idea. It is not because I don't have any ideas at all, but because I can't feel anything, and feel something I have to if I want to write things that will feel alive to both me and the potential reader.

Normally I would stop a video like this the moment I realized I cant even hear the dialogue on maximum volume but the content interested me enough to read the transcript and I wasnt disappointed. So I give it a thumbs up. Great points. Just please, for the love of Calliope (patron of epic poetry), invest in a decent microphone set up! I have a Blue Yeti USB Mic and I am not what anyone would describe as wealthy. I'm what they call "working poor". So if I can afford a better than average mic then I'm sure you could manage it too. Mine was only around 100 dollars. There are way cheaper ones but if you are going to be a content creator you really need to invest in a mic that is well known for its sound quality. That is actually more important than video quality if all you are showing is yourself talking. The average smart phone has good enough video quality.
