    CFT1 was a really fun build. I've built two QMX radios and I built the CFT1 in less than half the time. The fact this rig comes with a pre-wound toroid option is pretty incredible too. (In my opinion, the toroids are relatively simple to wind as they're very few turns). We're lucky to have someone like Jonathan innovating in the CW space here in the United States! P.S. the CW receive quality is top notch!

    "Do you game?" "I'm grown..." 🤣 I think propagation disadvantages affect regions. I've seen my own seemingly poor results, then later surprised to see that I placed very well among my peers (bad conditions for all of Roanoke Division?). I like that the awards are regional in VHF contests. I compete as a "Limited Rover," which is the lowest four VHF bands and with 100W/200W limitations, depending on the band. That way, I'm not competing with the QRO or 10-band stations. There are "FM Only" and "Three Band" (6/2/440) categories, too, though Rovers aren't eligible. I like the Mobile/Rover/Expedition categories in the VA QSO Party, too. Plus, the contest is suspended overnight on Saturday to encourage operators to rest. And AMEN to real-time scoring! There should be some time slop for Rovers who may operate someplace without 4G/5G connectivity. But, on the other hand, there are some who audio record their QSOs and then log them at their leisure long after the contest is over, all while declaring that they're "single operator," which defeats the time constraints of the contest. Good ideas and fun show, guys! -Scott

    Why haven’t I jumped in my _DeLorean_ and gone back to when copper was a lot cheaper and bought a few hundred feet of *_”wahr”?_* Oh, yeah … _Digikey_ and _Mouser_ don’t stock *FLUX CAPACITORS* …😀 I used to work for an electrical contractor and _”THHN”_ was his favorite. The insulation was a lot more _”slippery”_ and easier to pull through a conduit. Also (at least back then) it was certified as _”plenum wire”_ due to its 105° temperature rating. As for the _”tinned copper”,_*skin effect* is *NOT* your friend (for *antenna* use). *CCA* _(copper clad aluminum)_ is better. For DC use, it’s just the opposite. *73 de AF6AS in **_“DM13”_** land*

    The rabbit ears that come with the rtl-sdr is a really good tool to experiment with in the same way. You're showing a pretty good demo of how the feed point impedance changes with both angle and feedpoint position. Centre fed dipoles aren't single band - try doing a sweep from 100Mhz - 500Mhz on the VNA, you'll see the dipole work on both 2m and 70cm. If you change it into a 1/3rd feedpoint you will see the 3rd harmonic disappear but the second harmonic will come down, but they will both be higher impedence (smaller loops on the VNA). Inverted V's have lower impedance, you'll see the loop grow around the centre when it's lower than 50ohm.

      @@75ohmHAM You can put it to rest by learning a little about the physics of antennas. If one side of a dipole radiates less than the other it means the current is not symetrical, because of common mode current on the shield. Both sides of the antenna work. Please don't give hams a reason to think otherwise. k2xt

    • @75ohmHAM
      @75ohmHAM 12 днів тому

      One side of a dipole does radiate less than the other, current between them is not symmetrical, but you missed by assuming it's CMC on the shield from a VNA.. is to blame. Both sides do "work" of course lol (and I never said they didn't) but they are not equal by any means. If the dipole leg electrically connected to an RF amplifier effects frequency, The other leg usually bonded or grounded to earth, changes it's impedance, like I demonstrated live, with a smith chart, How could you say the antenna is supposed to be symmetrical You couldn't. Honestly. I welcome your discord on the CaHR Toads Server, cheers 🍺

    So, Ape, If the reflected power at the feedpoint (when there is a mismatch and you have those terrible swars) gets burned up as heat how to you account for the performance of a resonant dipole (say 50 ohms) fed with 600 ohm line? de Rick, K2XT

      @@CoffeeandHamRadios So, power comes up the 600 ohm open wire feedline, hits the 50 ohm load, most of it gets reflected, so what happens to it? I know, but please don't leave the viewers wondering. And loss in the feedline doesn't really matter much at all.

In a more derogatory sense, it might be termed "baiting" or "being disingenuous"

      Fee, I have read Maxwell’s book reflections. I’m assuming that you have read his article on conjugate matching and now you are attempting to appear clever or smart, how cute. We both know it’s re-reflected back toward the antenna. It’s really up to the operator to decided what amount of coax loss “isn’t much” or are you the authority over that as well? Ape

    @thesmokingApe What did you learn that would have you using something other than decent speaker wire these days for a bifilar winding for a balanced dipole center? It hypothetically strikes me as a reasonable choice, since a 1:1 isn’t going to heat up dramatically and melt your pvc insulation. And sure it could be a little thinner insulation; therefore wire held closer to the interior of the core, but people use coax which has a reasonable insulation thickness as well, and seems like the consistent spacing between the two wires is a nice thing. Is this because that speaker wire wasn’t pure copper? Bc you suspect maybe the PVC might not be invisible to RF? Or just some combination of uncertainties about the specs of the wire bc it was likely cheap?

    • @CoffeeandHamRadios
      @CoffeeandHamRadios 12 днів тому

      Hey Kinetic, I agree that in a choking capacity it shouldn’t get hot. And I would use speaker wire if that’s what I had on hand and I think I said that in the video. As you suggested the wire I had was CCA and not pure copper and that’s why I’d prefer using something else.

    Bottom Line Up Front: Balanced feedline fed dipoles (a doublet) can work multiple bands without suffering power losses from high SWR like coax fed dipoles, all else being equal. Long winded version: Why a doublet? It's best use-case is when you can only fit one wire antenna and it has to work multiple bands. Having to work multi-bands means the antenna is mostly going to be non-resonant and SWR will be anywhere from "ok" to "OMG!" high. More often than not, it will be higher than a built in tuner can handle. With unbalanced coax, high SWR means you are losing power heating up the dielectric, the balun, and whatever else is resisting the flow prior to the feedpoint. With balanced feedline, the typical dielectric is "air" and it does not lose/sap power on the way to the feedpoint (well - it still does have **some** loss, but it's negligible compared to coax). And as long as the radiator is at least a half wave length (or longer) for the freq of interest, it will happily radiate whatever power you can get to the feedpoint regardless of resonance. The trick is getting that power to the feedpoint as intact as possible. Coax can be super lossy in this use case (multi-band, single wire antenna), where balanced feedline isn't, relatively speaking.
