I've had 3 cryptogenic strokes and a pulmonary embolism and suffer from migraines with aura. I first found out about my hole in the heart about 30 years ago. I'm now 74 and so far no doctor has ever told me that my PFO was the cause, in fact they have told me I don't have to worry about it with no explanation why I don't have to worry about it. I am on the blood thinner Apixaban. I have had brain scans years ago to find out why I was having so many migraines as well as one migraine that lasted for over a week with numbness, and aura. They had said there was scar tissue on my brain but did not know what was causing it. I had been told that the hole is not that large, but hell I've had these strokes and many blood clots and the pulmonary embolism so something is going on. I have never been referred to a cardiologist. BTW I was in the hospital at the time they noticed the pulmonary embolism and was on my way down for a CT scan when I had a cardiac arrest. If I had not been in the hospital, I would not have survived.

Its very good to hear that he looks at how the person is feeling as well as the medical physical attributes. These are two different 'worlds' really. You also have to remember that even if somebody made a complete physical and mental recovery from a brain injury, they still had the experience of being injured and the failure of understanding from family members or contemporaries afterwards . This often leads to embarrassment, humiliation and bullying or undermining treatment during the years of recovery work. Most people will never know how terrifying it is to be hit by a car doing 60 mph when you are only 12 years old. To feel the acute pain of multiple injuries and face the horrific sense of being about to die and feeling your brain shutting down is limited to a very small number of people still in the world with us. Here I have tried to describe it in words, however the actual feeling and memories will never leave you as long as you live. Your subconscious mind knows every millisecond of detail, even if you consciously can't remember after awaking from a coma. It is much worse than can be described. To turn this into a positive, what happens is you realize that not many people understand this and you learn to manage and tone-down the experience through self-awareness and counselling/talking. Because you have empathy for others you forgive them for not getting it and over the years your self-management ability increases. recovery is possible but it varies, takes years, strength, understanding and patience like you have never known.
