1920? Sears Silvertone phonograph with Edison and Pathe record adapter repair
I ran out of inventory to sell. So I get this old Silvertone going. It would not play more than half a record. It looked clean and lubed at first glance. The inside of the spring barrel was another story!
Also, I could not get an exact year of manufacture on this machine. If anyone knows please let me know, thanks!

Don's "Box O Phonograph Horn!" part 1

Phonograph triage 3, Otto's Cylinder Player!

I get the spring in for the cylinder player that had the name "Otto" scratched on the case and on the motor bed. It gets mechanically reassembled and will be ready for the cabinet to be worked next.
Phonograph Triage part 2

I ended up selling the cylinder player that I refinished the cabinet on. So I am scrambling to complete another machine that I can put up on my Ebay store. I am starting by fixing the cabinets on the project machines. The easiest mechanical repairs will be done first. The bigger projects will be further down the line. Plus a sneak peek at an upcoming project that a veteran phonograph collector ...
Edison Fireside Cabinet Refinish, Shellac
Переглядів 1934 місяці тому
I finally finished the Edison Fireside and am ready to list it on Ebay. I have way more labor in this than what it's worth, but I have to count the education I received working on it as having value. Shellac is supposed to be easy to work with. Maybe if you are putting on a satin to semi gloss finish. If you try to make a piano finish with it, it is hell on earth! I won't be doing that again, s...

I picked up more inventory for my antique flipping side hustle, but the more I work on it the more I think I'm going to keep it! I have nothing like it in my collection. It is a very early marriage of a mechanical phonograph with a battery operated radio. Really neat and strange! The early stuff always excites me. I will put the intro video on this phonograph channel and on my radio channel. I ...

I start stripping the old paint of off the cabinet and test the top to see what I can do with it. I tried just a wax finish. I wasn't satisfied with it, and decide to give oldschool shellac a try.

The governor speed is checked, the spring is greased, and the mechanism gets wiped down. I also try a turntable speed, phone app for the first time and put it up against my laser tachometer.

That swollen bearing is not too difficult, I have dealt with them in the past with a few fireside and standard D machines, a good rubber mallet with a wooden dowel and a cloth on the mandrel Does the job well. If the bearing isn’t in multiple pieces, and is just swollen, then a drill bit with just a smaller diameter than the bearing can be inserted and wiggled around until it fits the mandrel Dowell. This has worked for me a few times, but if the bearing is in pieces, I would recommend the Phonograph shop for a new bearing. 👍

They will be as I work my way through the mountain of radios. I am rounding up missing parts and putting together recap kits with diagrams for everything in this room before I go after them. Right now I have 2 other phonographs and 2 radios ahead of these. I will be posting the radio stuff on my other channel www.youtube.com/@electricalmagicsmoke

That era of radio was called a “regen” set where there were three knobs to align in order to receive stations, other knobs to adjust tube filament voltage. It can be frustrating so my advice is there’s a gentleman here on UA-cam channels called glassinger who builds his own tubes and they work! Watch his channel and contact him for help. He’s the highest knowledgeable person you can contact but hurry as he’s as old as your radio! ( approach with open mind please).

I have seen alot of his videos. Very knowledgeable. The radio club I belong to is currently trying to locate me a ux120 tube. It is proving to be a challenge. I won't be going after another Radiola again unless it already has its tubes.

    • @OldMechanicalMagic
      @OldMechanicalMagic 9 місяців тому

@RC-wm7cw You are better of buying a working one and selling yours for parts. The cutters are no longer available. It's not worth the aggravation in my opinion. The original was a cupped glass cutter. I have know idea how someone other than an expert glass worker could make one. Then the cost would exceed that of a working one. If you do find a source please let me know and I'll share it on UA-cam. 😃
