A Nightmare on Affiliate Street – How sites violating 'Site reputation abuse' are dropping in Google
In episode 17, I cover some huge visibility drops for sites that are violating Google's 'Site reputation abuse' spam policy. For example, some prominent sites are dropping over time including some of the largest publishers on the web. Over time, Google seems to have algorithmically hit large publishers with affiliate sections of their sites, including Forbes, Fortune, CNN Underscored, WSJ Buyside, Marketwatch Guides, and more. It makes you wonder if Google is testing its 'Site reputation abuse' algorithm update, or if other changes are impacting those sections strongly...

Catching tricky mobile SEO problems in Google's mobile-first indexing world [Case Studies and Tools]
Переглядів 16721 день тому
I cover two case studies underscoring the importance of catching sneaky mobile SEO problems in Google's mobile-first indexing world. The first case study involves canonical tags that weren't being published on mobile versions of the pages across a site with 100K urls. The second case involves thin content becoming even *thinner* since less content was being published on mobile versions of the p...

After digging in, I noticed a ton of volatility across several dates in September after the core update completed. And be...

In Episode 14 of ‘SEO From The Front Lines”, I cover how some publishers are hijacking the browser back button and providing a feed of articles that drives users to more publisher content, including sponsored content and ads. That’s versus allowing them to return to the sites they visited from… Disabling, or hijacking the back button, is a tricky and deceptive tactic, since users might not know...

Google’s August 2024 broad core update finally completed on September 3, 2024 after a 19-day rollout. It was a huge update that impacted many sites across the web. In the final episode of core update notes, I cover HCU(X) sites recovering, the big tremor from 8/24 into 8/25, forums seeing volatility, an update on a site pumping out a ton of AI content, and then how site owners can move forward ...

I cover an update on September Helpful Content Updates sites (HCUX), tremors I'm seeing during the update, sites violating Google's Site Reputation Abuse spam policy, how YMYL sites can surge even with a fraction of the links of competitors, how Google will eventually catch up with sites heavily publishing AI-generated cont...

Beyond Reddit and Quora: Many Forums Saw Explosive Growth Based On Google's Hidden Gems Update
Переглядів 1322 місяці тому
With Google's hidden gems update in the fall of 2023, both Reddit and Quora surged like crazy. Although many are focused on the surge of Reddit, with good reason, it's important to understand that many forums surged in the fall of 2023. I have covered this heavily on X over time. So I just ran the visibility numbers for 97 forums I'm tracking across verticals. The percentage change year-over-ye...
Did Bing Roll Out A Major Search Algorithm Update on May 29, 2024?
Переглядів 1,2 тис.2 місяці тому
While checking Bing Webmaster Tools recently, I noticed a huge change across sites starting on May 29, 2024. The more I dug in, the more volatility I saw. It sure looks like Bing pushed some type of large algorithm change that impacted many sites across the web. The surges and drops I am seeing are across sites and verticals, so it's not just one niche. I reached out to Bing's Fabrice Canel to ...

Glenn Gabe's Missing SMX Advanced Slides (2024)
Is this applicable for discover traffic as well
Discover is an extension of Search, so any impact to Search visibility can impact Discover visibility. I'm actually covering more about this in my NESS presentation on Tuesday! So yes, I would be very careful about the type of content hosted on a site, where that content resides, and if it looks "independent or starkly different" from the main content of the site. It could impact Search, which can then impact Discover.
Update 2: I received a response from Google after following up to learn more about what was going on (since Danny Sullivan explained that Google was NOT testing the ‘Site reputation abuse’ algorithm). Here is their response: “Our systems aim to understand if a section of a site is independent or starkly different from the main content of the site. This helps us surface the most useful information from a range of sites.” They also provided a link to a tweet thread from 2019 where they addressed questions about hosting third-party content on subdomains or subfolders. My thoughts: So it seems Google is improving its systems for understanding when content located in subdomains or subfolders is “independent or starkly different from the main content of the site.” This is super-important to understand and I’m glad Google shared that with me.
Quick Update: I heard from Google's Danny Sullivan about this and he confirmed that Google is NOT testing its 'Site reputation abuse' algorithm at this time. So, the drops must be from other changes that Google is pushing that are impacting those affiliate directories strongly. I updated my post with that information. Very interesting.
Thanks for sharing💖
Since 3 days we got hit like crazy, we focused on the German market. All our important rankings are gone. It’s crazy!
HI Glenn, is there any way to Increase keyword CTR and get website in top 5 position
Good stuff here, Glenn. It feels exceptionally cruel to give Housefresh/Retrododo false hope with just a few shorts weeks of visibility before burying them in the SERPs again. For that reason alone, I think/hope we haven't seen the end of this recent volatility 🤞🏼
thx for analysis
Glenn do these sites you monitor that have dropped have anything in common? AI content, affiliate links, ecommerce, ads etc.
It's across verticals and across different types of sites. And again, I'm seeing a connection with the Aug 24th tremor, and then some HCU(X) sites that surged with the August update are reversing course a bit. Will be interesting to see if this sticks...
yeah i have also get this changes i am seo analyst for a blockchain company past week i have lot of traffic from uk but we just focus on only us regions. I cant even find out why it is happend
Interesting examples. Thank you. The volatility can only mean one thing: Google realizes that the August update didn't deliver the results they had in mind. Looking at the search results, I have to agree with that. In my own tiny dataset of 3 sites it was all hit and miss. Two surged but didn't deserve it. One dropped and didn't deserve it.
FInding patterns for SEO is difficult now.
Absolutely, but very interesting to see a number of sites impacted by the Aug 24th tremor reverse course on 9/6... Also interesting to see HCU(X) sites that surged with the August core update start to drop back down. I cover what I think this could be at the end of the video in case you didn't check that out yet. Stay tuned.
When do we think Google will announce another public algo update? With this continued volatility it seems that unconfirmed algo tweaks are running.
Really hard to say when the next confirmed algorithm update will roll out. I can see another core update later this fall, but in 2023, there were six confirmed algo updates in a short period of time... which was insane (and unusual). Also, the reviews update is running behind the scenes and Danny explained that was being updated pretty frequently... What we're seeing now could be a number of things, including Google decoupling algorithms from broad core updates and running them separately, testing something else in the wild (which could be rolled back), or other things. Stay tuned. I'll be tracking this closely.
Always appreciate your insights, Glenn! 🙌
Hey, thanks Jack. I appreciate it! I'll be tracking this closely and will post more about what I'm seeing. Stay tuned.
Thanks Glenn for producing the video. Are you also planning to create the video version of your case studies/blog posts? :)
Hey, thank you for watching! I plan on covering a number of topics in my videos, including algorithm updates, my blog posts, case studies, new SERP features, and other disturbances in the SEO force. Definitely subscribe so you don't miss an episode. :)
Thanks Glenn
Google is pure evil and or stupid, but either way they should be shut down just looking at these charts suggests this.
Hello Dear I hope this message finds you well. I'm Emon, a professional digital marketer with a focus on UA-cam video SEO and Google Ads. Are you struggling with subscriber and video views for monetization ? I wanted to reach out and share how my expertise can help enhance your UA-cam channel's visibility and drive more engagement. I was analysing your UA-cam channel
Great insights Glenn. Thank you for putting in the effort!
What still ranks? Local, ecommerce & big publishers. Why? They also spend money on ads. Sites monetized with display ads or affiliate are unlikely to become Google ads customers so why would they give exposure to these sites for free. Also, now companies that relied heavily on their affiliate programs will need to spend more on ads as all this traffic is gone.
To clarify the part of the video about HCU(X) sites dropping even more with the August core update. 57 of the 390+ sites dropped more than 25% with the update. That's ~15% of the sites I'm tracking that were heavily impacted by the September HCU(X).
As always thank you Glenn - great take away 'kitchen sink' approach works great when having to change overall interpretation of site.
Thanks for all that data. So, a site that wasn't hit during HCU, pretty much ticks all the Google guidelines boxes, but now lost 50%, basically has to sit and wait until Google changes their intent parameters? I don't have a clue about what to improve. Anything we'd do would be to please Google, which is not what they want us to do. Looking forward to your next videos.
Great info here. Thanks! ...and here I thought I was the only person still saying "gif"
That's a wild increase for forums. I'd love to know how this looked from the forums' perspective, whether this actually brought quality signups, or if it just generated tons of spam. Like I feel like reddit's visibility in search encourages spammers to post there. And Quora has long been a spam magnet.
Bing still exists? I'm trying to imagine a corporate search algorithm that can rival Google AND be more useful to us peasants.
Good to know about the links Gabe, thanks for all the updates.
I've actually observed Bing get better over time. It starts to rival Google now.
Right, Bing is a solid search engine, but tough to get people to switch from Google. Regardless, they are definitely innovating there...
We experienced similar changes on the 24th.
Interesting. I'll check that out.
Thank you. Any idea why that big brand site is tanking?
I have to dig in there more... But "quality" is more than just content. Google has explained that, and it's what I've been explaining for a long time. So like with most core update drops, it's never one smoking gun. Could be many playing a roll there...
@@GlennGabe Absolutely. That's what makes it more interesting (and worrying) when a big established site is tanking so dramatically. Assuming they didn't spam and are relevant within their industry, I wonder why Google would think such a drop is justified. Or, Google didn't intend this to happen and is losing control. Anyway, thanks again.
Excellent insights as always. My company's traffic was slashed by half after September HCU but this is the first time in a year we're starting to see a recovery. It's not a crazy surge like the examples you showed, but it's slow and steady. I don't mind, as long as it sticks, because in my opinion, the more explosive surges have a tendency to fall just as hard later on. BTW, I've noticed a huge increase in our Things to Know snippets as reported by SEMRush, but I'm not seeing any SEO gurus talk about that. Have you noticed anything with this particular type of snippet?
Hey, thank you. Glad you found my video helpful! And I've been covering the SERP features improvements with some sites, but not related to Things to Know. That's a great point and I'm seeing that across sites now. If you're on X, let me know. I'll give you credit for that find! Also, look for my next video later today. I'll be covering the latest with the August core update.
@@GlennGabe That's awesome! I'm looking forward to your next videos and updates. I'm no longer on X anymore but I do follow you on LinkedIn as well. However, I'd wish to remain anonymous lol. If you find anything worth sharing about Things to Know, feel free to do so without worrying about crediting me. Thanks for asking though. Appreciate it! :)
@@lordiblees Hey, no problem. Thanks again for pinging me about that. You are mentioned anonymously in Part 3 of "Core Update Notes", which I published yesterday. And on X this morning. :)
@@GlennGabe Just saw the video. Lots of great info there. And interesting to see your quick thoughts on that particular snippet because I only noticed that for my company's site and wasn't sure if there's a wider trend across the web here. Thanks so much! Always enjoy your analysis.
Thanks Glen, good stuff, didnt think to check bing ever when it comes to search , good look!
Hi Glenn, do we know if any of those site surging have done anything on-site?
Some have, some haven't. And you can always see what was ranking before and what's ranking now.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
Without Redding going down none of this matters. Happy to share with you my results and how all of my competitors dropped and have not recovered
Accidentally left a link in last comment, so i'll try again: See cookscrafter site, which appears to have scraped americasrestaurant content, but i'm not an expert. It's 6 months old and surging since june with 80k visitors now, acc to Semrush. Lots of forum backlinks. Generic content with stock image.
btw what your profession
Yes. May 3-10 definitely was a vector change... we suddenly saw a downslope start on that day, which continues to this day. The current August update has increased the downward trend.
what
Yes, it’s Jif 😄👍 Thanks for sharing your analysis
I’m down 60% what is the reason
Things are looking bleak on my end
I'm sorry to hear that! Things can change during an update as Google can push "tremors", or adjustments as the rollout continues. I've posted about that a lot over the years, even from medieval Panda days. Google's John Mueller confirmed they can do that with major algorithm updates... But there's no guarantee that will happen. Stay tuned. I'll be publishing more of these videos throughout the rollout.
@@GlennGabe J is a puppet. But I get what you're saying. Thank you and keep us posted please ✌️
Thank you. In our case up on May 5. Down now (much more than we gained).
Right, there seems to be some type of connection for many sites. Sorry to hear you are down after surging then. I have many examples of the connection with those dates...
Somewhere I read if you publish lots of content within short period of time, Google reevaluates the entire sites to check the overall quality.
Where did you see this? I have a high-quality site in the plastic surgery/aesthetic medicine realm. We publish about 1-2 posts a month - patient education stuff, nothing for lead generation really. We've been declining in rankings/organic clicks/leads recently, so I am in the process of doing what I know works best: publishing a boatload of new content in a week. One post a day. In the past, this dislodged any downturn but I want to ensure I'm not wrecking ourselves lol
It is very bad that out of 380 sites only 47 are recovering, there is a high possibility that most of these 380 sites must have done good work, but HCU ate up to 98% of their traffic without any reason. If it was 40, 50% then it would have been understandable, but 98% drop is injustice to those small publishers And still forums, social media sites are ranking on top on SERP😢
My site went from 300k a month to 8, according to semrush. All of my competitors are not gaining from this update. Until Reddit falls, it doesn’t matter
Thanks for super update
Hey, thank you. I appreciate it. Stay tuned for more episodes as the update rolls out.
Good Analysis.... 👍
Thank you! We've been waiting for this update for a while... I'll keep posting what I'm seeing. :)
Good work Mr Gabe. The more higher Google rank Reddit the more fresh new data they get to mine from it
If a tree falls in the forest...
I hear you, but check the numbers in some of those screenshots. Bing still drives a good amount of traffic to some sites! :)
@@GlennGabe Fair enough. And who knows, maybe Bing will get more after this Google DOJ decision.
