First i apologize for the awful camera angle/resolution for the first half. I decided to make a video on how to do this so that way it would be easier for people to do it themselves in the future. My trucks symptoms that brought about this part replacement were whenever i was coming to a stop, usually turning or hitting a bump while turning, the engine would just shut off. all electrical was st...

    It's a bitch to replace you can't see what you are doing, it's all by feeling. You can't get to it underneath because the exhaust is in the way. Also good luck getting it back into position without the rubber boot falling into the hole........ I said every swear word in the book, and I do know how to work on cars a little bit.

    I tell ya I have an 02 dodge 1500 with 4.7 ..was my dad's he passed away suddenly of a hear attack..2 years ago..I've done been through all the window issues they have..but my trucks doing all the same things..over started with very rough.idle..over changed out the crank shaft sensor. .rhe aftermarket one..u have to modify to even get to fit vut I've bought two diff ones but when I put them n the trick wouldn't start..lol so I ended up putting the old back.in..my track had the knock n rattle like a lot of the videos I've seen..it shows misfire on every cylinder. .it also says 1 thru ten..but only 8 cylinders ..it replaced pvc..it have new spark plugs I'm getting ready.put in..and I did have a code for the air intake sensor..which m getting ready to change..I even gutted my cat..that was a job..but then I seen the video today of the 4.7 being notorious for the rocker arm coming off..I'm thinking that's what it may be..there was a few videos where the guys have changed all coils and plugs..still made same noise ran.like crap.. I've ran that engine cleaner stuff in white can from autozone about half through in take and half into oil..dumped it changed it..have also replaced air filter..ill let you all know what happens but if any suggestions I'd appreciate..

    I replace both the TPS and the Idle Air Control Sensor, purchased at Advance Auto online with a 25% Discount, which came to $95 with taxes. There is a sensor on left side of the intake housing you must unplug before removing housing. I used my cordless drill with attachment and a 10mm and 8mm socket to remove the hose clamps (8mm), and intake housing (10mm), and a star socket to remove TPS and IACS. If your TPS comes with either a gasket or an O-ring, be sure to note which is needed (not both). The TPS mount will have a slot for the O-ring, if not use the gasket. It came off, and went on fairly easy. Kneeling on the bumper was easier than standing on a metal chair to get at the components. Oh, and disconnect the neg. bat. cable as the video states. Lastly, purchase some throttle body cleaner and spray the body, intake, and TPS and IACS out before mounting parts. The IACS had some black residue that took a little elbow grease to remove with the cleaner. Note: The TPS when mount will have a slight resistance when you turn it, that operates the throttle butterfly valve, be sure you have some resistance when it's mounted, if not put the tab on the side of the TPS insert that gives you that resistance, you should be able to turn the TPS and see the throttle valve open slightly. Work the throttle a few times before starting engine to be sure parts are mounted correct, if the throttle binds, remove parts and replace the in the correct way. So far truck is idling normal at 1200-1500 RPM steady.

    Thanks for your post! Here's a 40 minute removal from the top- you'll never have to get under the engine or remove a wheel and inner fender: Remove the air intake plastics and cover the throttle body. Make an 3/8 extension set to clear the valve covers (different for each bolt and described below) and still be firmly seated into the 1/4 inch hex head. remove bolts, remove sensor by pulling it out of the bell housing, fish it toward the throttle body, pull the wiring connectors up to gain access, disconnect the wires and fish it back to the sensor, remove sensor, reinstall in reverse order. The only tools needed are described below. Good luck if you go this route. :-) I took mine out pretty easy using a 3/8 ratchet, swivel, 6 inch extension, 10 inch extension (only to link to the extensions above the valve cover). There are two ways to assemble the extensions: for the bolt nearest the throttle body- 1/4 inch hex socket to 6 inch extension to swivel to 10 inch extension to ratchet. For the bolt nearest the inner fender- 1/4 hex socket to swivel to 6 inch (maybe a 4 inch would be better) to 10 inch extension to ratchet. You can get your hand in there to start and remove both the bolts from the top. Don't panic! Just get your hands in there. Hands go over the top or around the side/ below the valve cover for the different bolt locations. After the two bolts are removed...locate the plug connector near the fuel rail or behind the distributor. I worked the old sensor back toward the fuel rail, disconnected the wiring, and fished the old sensor back- noting the route. Then I removed and reinstalled in a similar fashion. About 40 minutes.

    For the guys having the starting stalling problem check your fuel pump relay. Sometimes mine would start and run for a few then shut off. I noticed when I turned the key to ON I sometimes didn't hear the fuel pump cycle. Swap it with a known good one until you can replace it. I have an '02 1500 4.7

    If your truck starts to die when you let you foot off the gas or does pretty much exactly what the guy in the video decribed its a good sign that your Idle Air Control sensor is sticking inside the throttle body. My dakota with the 4.7l does this every once in a awhile. What i do it just take a sensor cleaner and clean the sensor and the housing it fits in which is right below the Throttle Positioning sensor. I have to clean these about once every 2 months.

      what happens when you change the tps and the idle air control sensor and a month later it starts to stall when you are going slower and now my service engine light is on also what next?

    • @jessegibboney4389
      @jessegibboney4389 8 років тому

      +Duncan Williams If u have a check engine light on, that is the first thing to check. On dodge and jeep the code can be checked by turning the key to the on position then back off three times very quicky and leaving it in the on position the third time. If you did it right ur tachometer will display any engine codes that u have. So what is ur engine code?

    • @simplelifelearning
      @simplelifelearning 8 років тому

      i changed my idle air controll valve code was tps changed it still idles high when first start to 1200rpm for about 1 1/2 minutes then bounces slowly down to 650 also while im driving the rpms are slightly bouncing up and down any ideas im stumped truck feels like something is holding it back

    • @jessegibboney4389
      @jessegibboney4389 8 років тому

      +Duncan Williams I would pull the throttle body and clean it really well. The throttle body is only held on by three bolts. The other things that would need to be removed is the electrical connections to the IAC and TPS. Then the throttle cable and cruise control cable. I do know a dirty throttle body can cause idle problems. When u do so make sure to pull the throttle body gasket out and clean it. Lastly clean the IAC and TPS gaskets to.

    I had this problem where my 2005 dodge ram 1500 v8 4.7l would jerk a little at low speeds and won't have that power it should have, by my experience Change The Throttle position sensor (TPS) first most likely it will be that and make sure to remove the ground terminal from the battery first. My truck runs like new now Thanks man

    My 2005 Dodge Ram 4WD 4.7 engine was having the same erratic idle problem, which was causing shift issues as well. I could NOT find a cause for this for weeks. Replaced the IAC, Idle Air Control motor/module, which helped the issue somewhat for a few weeks, but degraded quickly. Used my scan tool, no codes to be found. When I replaced the TPS ( throttle position sensor) it immediately cured the problem, and bumped my gas mileage up 2 more miles per gallon. And the blue wire referred to is for the IAT, Intake air temp sensor. My 2005 truck uses a MAP system, and not a MAF system. I DO hope this helps some folks out there, because apparently, this is a wide-spread, seriously aggravating, problem with the 4.7 and 5.7 engines.

    On the 2004 5.7 the sensor release clip is slightly tricky. It has a red/orange tab that has to be pushed sideway as it locks the sensor - pushing the thin side from right to left looking in the plug hole. Then depress the back and it comes off. Reverse needed fit sensor push clip left to right. Hope this helps. 10mm socket worked for me and truck running sweet as.

    what motor is yours? i got a durango 4.7 and getting code p0340 and its been randomly not starting, then 10 min later i try starting it again and it starts. then goes days without a prob then does it again. well today i think it finally gave out after a hour n half of tryin to get it to start i left it at work n got a ride. i believe i found it on pass side of my 4.7, but i wanted to know if u can get at it by just getting underneath or do u have to take a tire off or anything else off?
