The Contents Are - Live in Davenport, Iowa, 1968 (Full Show)
The Contents Are... ARE one of my favorite groups. Their 1967 private press LP "Through You" is a highly original garage mega rarity. This group had such an organic, laid back sound, with really strong songwriting and tight musicianship. This is their whole performance at a show they played in their hometown of Davenport, Iowa, in 1968.
Enjoy~

The Second Summers, an obscure group from NY. This is side A of their only single. The studio acetate for said single was auctioned on Ebay not too long ago, featuring longer versions compared to what was originally released. Whoever bought that should read this and upload those versions...

The history of this track and this group is still not 100% clear to me. This was originally released on the Incredible Sound Show Vol. 5 comp as a song by The Silence (pre-John's Children), but later liner notes state that the track was actually written and recorded by Pierre Tubbs' band The Jeeps. I'd appreciate it if someone could drop more knowledge in the comments!

Recorded from the original vinyl. Takoma C-1005 (1967 reissue) Robbie's debut album on John Fahey's own Takoma Records. The origin of a completely unique (and primitive) style of acoustic guitar music, induced by Robbie's vast appreciation of stringed instrument music from a variety of different countries and cultures. Recorded from the original vinyl. Scepter Records - SPS-542 Mike Condello's heavily underrated pop/psych opus released in November of 1968. There are some really memorable and addictive tracks in this slab. The production isn't the greatest (Mike produced it himself), but the psychedelic constitution of this album more than makes up for it. Enjoy! Tracklist: 00:00 - Crystal Clear 03:35 - On No ...

The Jeeps evolved into Our Plastic Dream who released one single in 1967 on the Strike label titled "A Little Bit Of Sangrila/Encapsulated Marigold." On the site singsongmusic, you can read an article entitled "Features Pierre's Plastic Dream - The story behind the recordings". That also addresses your question. I hope it will be of some use to you! Cheers!
@@EdwinJack64 I will definitely look into that, thank you!
@Rivmic You're welcome!
Hello comrade Riv, The Russian spy and I got high! I think these guys were Cossack dancing in the studio during the recording of this song after mass consumption of Stolichnaya vodka. The Russian themed freak-out makes this standout. Happy New Year
Thomas, buddy, after some searching I found some very interesting things about The Regents from Los Angeles. The Regents were the house band for the A.M.-P.M. Discotheque in Hollywood. The band line-up was: - John Harris (bass) - Mike McDonald (vocals, lead guitar) - Jerry Rosa (vocals, tambourine) - Craig Boyd (drums) - Tom Baker (12-string and rhythm guitar). They released several singles. "Their last 45 was “Russian Spy and I” written by Jackie Javellin (aka Casper Koelman) and originally done by the Dutch group the Hunters. The Regents version is probably the most well-known, at least here in the U.S. Though the Regents lift the opening riff directly from Hunters guitarist Jan Akkerman, the solo is much more intense, the tempo of the song quicker and the harmonies much more effective than the Hunters version. I bet they could have done a killer version of this live. Produced by Norm Ratner for Dot 16970 in November, 1966, the flip was a cover of “Bald Headed Woman”. Craig Boyd was later in US Psychedelic Rock/Blues Rock band The Hook (1967-1969). Sources: Discogs, Rate Your Music, Garagehangover Cheers, Rhinetripper
Funny to hear this cover by an American band. In fact, the original is by The Hunters from Amsterdam (1966). The song was written by Jan Akkerman and Jackie Javellin (Casper Koelman) and originally performed on a Gretsch White Falcon 👌
Edwin Jack I never heard of these Regents (there are 5 Regents that I know of) What's wild is that this American garage band covered a Nederbeat tune when Nederbeat was almost unknown in the US in 1966. Tee-Set and Shocking Blue didn't come along until 1969. That's a cool scoop of info you put out there. This Russian themed garage tune makes me want to do the Cosssack dance. Na Zdorovie, amigo
@thomassmith8721 I learnt that from you indeed and that's what makes it so amazing! It makes you wonder what roads this song took to end up with a band in LA! Fascinating! The song was played a lot by pirate station Radio Veronica from the North Sea but I still don't believe California was reached with their broadcasts 😅 It did reach #10 at Radio Veronica/Top 40. Jan Akkerman, who plays the Gretsch himself here, called it a kind of balkan rock'n'roll...💃 Thomas, my friend, I just pulled out a reference book, OOR's Pop Encyclopaedia, 9th edition 1994, and it says that the Hunters achieved THE AMERICAN TOP 100 with "The Russian Spy And I"!!! Unbelievable right? This is something for you to find out Thomas! Which Top 100 is this?
@@EdwinJack64 I don't think this song hit any chart in the US. It's pure underground garage psych. I don't know. Maybe it got local airplay. It's a puzzler. I'll have to dig for info. Rog Brown talked about pirate radio broadcasts. It sounds wild and cool. Kind of like off shore FM radio. Duane Eddy also played a Gretsch 🎸
@@EdwinJack64 Tremors- "Wondering Why" from Springfield/Urbana, Ohio released Dec "66 or Jan "67 (it's a fierce garage punker) The Savage Generation=👍👌
@thomassmith8721 Indeed! What a fierce garagepunker! Suitable song title 😅 Didn't know this one, thanks 👌 Got a spin on the flipside "What Have I Done" right away, completely different, very moody... * Squires - Wonderin' (1965)
Pierre Tubbs seems to have been also a member of The Silence, which could explain the confusion
💀💀💀💀
Love this song! Learned this on my guitar! 😊
Yes. This is one of the best garage rock songs ever, like you sayed. I love this song.
Always a great 1st and second Jerry lead riff that makes me head rolling ya know
Awesome cover of the original version by The Leaves. Is this the flip side of "Talk Talk"? Were there two covers on one acetate? or is this another rare acetate? Music Machine and The Leaves were two killer Los Angeles psych garage bands. The Here & After were tough garage punks. I wonder if they recorded any originals.
I'm guessing they're two separate acetates. This group also recorded a slightly different take of Hey Joe, and a really good cover of Mister You're A Better Man Than I. Those are available on the Lows In The Mid Sixties comp. Maybe I'll post them soon...
This puts the Lee Michaels original to shame, what a heavy track! Meat Loaf is in great form here too, you can really hear him trying to figure out his trademark vocal sound
My social life's a dud My name is really mud Outrageous cover. These KC dudes could talk the the talk and walk the walk.
So many good stuff out of Damon
Yes yes yes!!
Original by The Contours 1965 Great garage version of a Motown tune.
Great crazy mover! Reminds of that other great band from MI, Terry Knight & The Pack with "How Much More"...
Twisted garage raver. A hippy home is a happy home.
I love the J. Geils Band version but I've never heard this one - it's awesome! Thanks for the upload!
Love the J Geils Band version, too!
Lyrics please 🙏 it s for cover with my band
That's some cool Motown.
Bless 'em!

That little organ is the real deal!
Catchy organ. Like Beach Boys with Gary Lewis and the Playboys doing a one-off. Nice garage pop tune.
Love it!!
is that a picture in 67?
Snappy little tune. A real toe tapper.
Patchy, & sound balance rough - Robert's voice sometimes almost inaudible - but fascinating to hear this legendary stuff.
Ultra snotty and way cool. Thanks.
Not as good as their top originals like Never Alone or Writing On The Wall indeed but still interesting, thanks for sharing!
I'm no expert, but this sounds like it may be a soundboard tape that didn't come out perfect. Nonetheless, this is a vital document of an amazing band. Thanks!
This actually sounds better than their "studio" recordings. 😂
Crude garage. Primitive drums. Keyed up guitar. Lo-fi recording, like it was actually recorded in a garage.
the only one doing it, sick vids, as usual
The sounds of an acoustic storm
amazing
I love this album - thanks for the vinyl rip! I have listened to the CD over and over and also the original LP. And the promo LP which I think sounds different. It says mono but it isn't mono, I think there are some alternate mixes. It is surprising that the album isn't better known. Oh No is a phased psych pop classic!
Are the mixes on the promo cleaner than this release?
@@Rivmic I remember thinking that they were more psychedelic! My stock copy was in storage when I bought the 'mono' copy so I wasn't able to verify this impression. I will try to do an A-B comparison of each track and I will let you know what I find...
@@Ted_Selke Interesting, let me know what you think!
@@Rivmic I finally got a chance to compare each track to your upload (my stock copy is still in storage). It's a white label promo with text only like a test pressing and the cover says 'mono'. But it is all stereo, and I don't think it even says mono on the record label. Your upload sounds great, but this promo LP sounds cleaner, with less reverb and boominess. And that might be a youtube feature - it's like when the loudness button is on. It's usually great but you want to be able to turn it off. Thanks again for uploading this fantastic and very psychedelic LP!
@ Thanks for the insight, I’d like to seek out a promo copy of my own at some point. It is true that the stock copies sound quite tinny, and the youtube auto compression does not help. But overall I’m glad with how this rip turned out. Thanks for listening
Rivmic, the entire LP is addictive. Each track is another fix. The last track is an overdose. Great album. Ty

@@Rivmic Oh yeah
If there is another band by the name Ravin" Blue, the song I've heard is, "In My Sorrow" released 1967. It's a rip-off of "Under The Boardwalk' by The Drifters. It still is pleasing in its own way.
Wow! Cool garage version. I've heard a total psych version by a garage band called Phleglathon? That may not be the correct spelling, but it was released sometime between "67-"69.(I don't the exact year) It has been recorded by Betty Everett 1963 (I think she recorded it first) Dee Dee Warwick, also recorded in1963. The Swinging Blue Jeans 1964 Linda Ronstadt 1974. Van Halen 1979. Thanks for this post One little thing. At one time I assumed the original was by Linda Ronstadt.
@@thomassmith8721 The cover by Phlegethon is probably the best rendition of this song I know of, that guy knew how to shred an organ. Interestingly he used a farfisa with a rotating Leslie speaker
I didn't think my spelling was right, but you knew what I meant because you're a garage person. Cool Farfisa and Leslie speaker combo created a unique sound. The organist shredded indeed. It's my favorite version. Van Halen"s wasn't too shabby. I have a feeling they heard Phlegethon"s version. Maybe the Ravin" Blues, too. Who knows? Both versions are obscure. They're both good. ✌️
Great! Judging by the picture, you must have found it buried in a desert!
Love it! ❤
I rediscovered this precious gem at age 66 ....when it dropped in '67, I was 9 and didn't or couldn't yet appreciate its majestic sound.....now I do 100% ❤❤❤❤
