I run a guitar and amp repair shop in Suffolk UK. I also teach guitar and play most weekends. This channel exists mostly to share the diverse range of instruments and kit that comes across the bench and give something back to my clients. Most of the videos are from the workshop, from where I upload regularly.

Taylor 514 New Pickup

I love Taylor guitars. This 514 is a stunner but the output failed. Turns out the pickups are all wired in series so if one breaks, the whole system goes down. In this video I remove the neck to get at the failed pickup and change it over. I also give the guitar a fret polish and a new set of strings 00:00 Intro 00:37 On the bench 03:00 Testing the pickup 04:19 Fitting the new pickup 08:43 Fret...
Fender Stratocaster - P90 pickups and a Hardtail Bridge

We don't see many Fender Stratocaster with a hard tail bridge and P90 pickups. The Noventa series have this option and give a rounder sound but with that single coil chime. The bridge saddles on this one had been filed and a screw was gone missing so a new set of Fender Original Parts saddles are fitted in this video. Links to the parts below. We also take the neck off of the guitar to adjust t...

Another enjoyable video Chris. Nice to see you changing out that duff string from the new pack, but hey its what I'd expect from Hale Guitar Studio. Hope the Mac Book OS learning curve is starting plateau 🤣
Thanks Jon. Loving the new Mac but its definitely a change after a lifetime of Windows :)
Enjoying working my way through your videos. I'm 9 mins into this one and heard you say Colchester? Is that where your based? As I'm about 20 mins away and would happily get you to have a look at a few of my guitars 🙂
Thanks Mike. Yes that's right. Have a look at the website www.haleguitarstudio.com I'd be glad to take a look for you.
So glad I came across your channel. Loving the videos. Could I ask what your using to clean the guitars?
Thanks dude. I really appreciate that. Of course, I use Axe Wax products. Axe Blast for cleaning and Axe Wax for the gloss. Ill put a link in the next video.
Love your video!
Cheers dude. Love your channel too :)
I bought this guitar in 2021 and been playing it a lot ever since - it's so great! Also had some problems with the original saddles so I upgraded to black Graph Tech ones. Feels and looks amazing now.
Good to hear the upgrade was a success for you too. Thanks for sharing.
subscribed cause of the beard 😅
Welcome and thanks for the love dude 🤘
Step one buy a Strat. Step two remove all parts that make it a Strat😂😂😂
Don’t expect to see a set of P90s eh?
that neck looks real nice, like the neck on a squier J Mascis Jazzmaster, (satin neck finish) for the life of me I dunno why each and every guitar fender makes doesnt have this finish? it's the best finish i've ever felt and i've had hands a few no jokes .. roast it sure, but the same finish as the jamascis is mandatory as that must be the best way and it holds up real nice, since 2014 and it hasn't changed a bit . . looks a lot like this one.. like they sanded it down to like 3500 grit then lightly hand rubbed in a finish, then burnished it with leather .. like you would a pool cue shaft .. so smooth so comfy, best ever no jokes . .
You know what, I think you're right. It did have a lovely satin feel. I'm not a big lover of heavy gloss, as a player, either.
Man he should have got Highwood saddles, they're brilliant!!
Thanks for the recommendation bud. I'll check them out.
Good job!
Thank you 🙏
Another enjoyable video Chris…cameras doing a great job too. Maybe I should mess up my tele partscaster you brought to life, bring it back in and hope for a 1 hour special video on it…hmm …right think I better get on with some guitar practice, just in case you need me to play it at the end 😂
Haha. I like your thinking. I’ll get the camera ready 😜
Super video Chris and as always - great job!! I always recommend you!!
Thank you Elle 🤩
Super nice guy that done a fantastic service and set up on my Ibanez prestige just a few months ago, can’t stop playing it now 🙏
Nice Job! Commenting to continue the Harley theme... ;)
Thank you very much for your service. Absolute amazing job!
My absolute pleasure Harley. Thanks for bringing to me :)
I install pure tone jacks in all my gits... never been dissapointed
They are so good :)
Best punk guitars for me have been the metal guitars from 80s-90s that were half off or on clearance at a pawn shop like Kramers, Jacksons, Washburns, BC Richs etc lol
I think that might be exactly how the Jaguar gained its fame :)
@haleguitarstudio wouldn't doubt it lol
It's either a Fender Jaguar or Mustang, take your pick IMHO.
Thanks for the set up Chris. The SG now plays an absolute dream. Great video too! 🤙
Thanks George. So happy its playing well for you. Lovin your channel too :)
Jay Turser
Thanks bud - Updated :)
What is your target neck relief height? When you slip the feeler gauge under the 8th fret, what size should the gap be?
I use a 0.010 inch/0.253mm feeler gauge and look for just a slither of light over the gauge, as a starting position. Some necks will tolerate less though, as will some players, so a tweak as you play will get the best result.
@@haleguitarstudio Thanks for the info! I have the same Jag (but in vintage white). Wonderful machine. Will follow your tips!
The vintage white ones are lovely. Doesn’t PJ Harvey play one?
@ I see photos of her with one, however it has the 60s neck with rosewood and smaller headstock.
Chris ... Just a bit of feedback thankyou for your care time and effort with the Violin, Wife and Mum inlaw both well impressed, straightforward compared to Blonde Tele 🤯 Kind Regards CC
Hey - I'm so happy to hear that. Thank you. If that Tele ever misbehaves again we can go straight to pickup extraction :)
Ah cool video. I should said video my Martin.. Which now sounds unbelievably good. Thank you for setting it up Perfectly
Thank you so much and that's really good to hear. The camera will be ready next time :)
Great video. Can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to collecting this today!
You and me both! Thank you :)
Thanks for sharing and beautiful workshop!!
Thanks Rob. Really appreciate that 🤩
Hey me too….think you should play each guitar after the set up, maybe a full BSC track or better still little wing live at the royal albert hall version all the way through 😅 …I know copywriter stuff, so maybe some blues or psychedelic space lead Floyd/Hawkwind like stuff instead😂……very strange bridge on this guitar, looks like a pain to string up etc…really nice looking guitar though. What’s the neck feel like when playing?
Nice job Chris
Thanks Jon :)
Fascinating video ! New subscriber 😛
Thanks and welcome 🤩
Would like to hear it played. Especially the P90s. Thank you for doing this video
Thank you for watching. I'll see if I can get something done for you :)
I bought a Squier Jaguar, silver sparkle finish on a whim last year but haven't really played it because it sounded crap to be honest. It is now with a local guitar tech being fettled. He recommended putting 11s on it.
It's not a bad shout. Honestly, out of the box the FSR 60's Jags do need some love. The bridges are frequently too low - and Jaguars rarely work well with 9 gauge strings. Mine ended up with 10 flats, with a slightly higher bridge - and obviously pickups raised to match. Thicker strings and higher pickups do wonders. Hope you love yours as much as I love mine, once it's been tweaked!
Heavier strings on a shorter scale length is a good move. Let us know how it goes :)
Just an FYI. The concept series was right before the performer series. But do not assume all performers are good. The first batch 95-96 were japanese. The later 97 to 99-2000 can be korean. And those guitars quality is not as good. Also the concepts and performers were routed for the cheap jt 500 pot metal garbage trem. A far better replacement than a gotoh for these particular models is a jt 590 which is just a jackson labelled schaller floyd rose. which is the real quality tremolo that the cheap Jt500 was modeled after. Therefore the route is perfect!
That’s a great FYI dude. Thanks for adding your knowledge to the comments. Really appreciate it.
That headstock looks off? Not a bulb.. Looks off hardcore.
what a beautiful guitar
great guitars, i've got the Rev. Dinky.. purple, HH, bridge is the big jackson blade.. love it, need to pull it out.. have a performer that's nice as well from that era, they made some fine instruments in japan back then, the best IMHO! curious why didn't you just remove the shims and screw the bridge down to get your action squared away? I want plenty of room to move both directions a good eighth above the deck in case I need to stop I'll pull up on the E brake.. ahh, you did pull the shims ... good deal..
Hey Dean - Got to love a Made in Japan. I think these JSX 94s were just before the Performers? Yea, taking those shims out made all the difference. Thanks for watching, dude.
How old is this guitar, I have a year E --- H150-CM
I recorded the whole serial number except for the all important letter. Yours is 1988 though, right?
by raising or lowering your string height with tension on your strings you will ultimately ruin your knife edges on your trem.losen strings then adjust height.any good Luthier will tell u the same..
Thanks for taking the time to comment Mike. You are right, of course. Fortunately no knife edges were harmed in the making of this video. ❤️
Are those ceramic pickups? I couldn't see it clearly.
Hey bud - Yes I think they were. Fitted as stock. New camera coming tomorrow so expect to see more :)
this is most uncomfortable bridge ever... Just XX century..

Beautiful guitar. Just wondering which Dimarzio pick up they went for?
Thanks matey - It was a Chopper T.
