how to read your sheet music if in different tuning of mountain dulcimer DAD vs DAA ( redue)

I am reducing the mountain dulcimer video to explain better how to read your sheet music given the tuning of dulcimer you are currently in. You either add 3 or subtract three depending on what book you have. And what tuning you are in

If you want to write a sad song - I mean a song that makes people cry - write it in Ionian. "Yesterday," "Send in the Clowns," "Danny Boy," "Nobody Home" by Pink Floyd, the list goes on and on.
@Emlizardo isn't that fascinating? It's nit quite sarcasm ( im assuming), but what do you think the equivalent would be when expressing it in spoken language?
@@NEEDFULSTRINGSLLC No sarcasm intended. I wonder if an ur-example of major tonality being used to express sadness is "Taps," played at military funerals. It's just a major triad. If we change the major third to a minor third, it doesn't sound sad anymore. To my ears minor modes can sound "serious," "solemn," or "angry" - most metal uses minor modes - but I can't think of a single song that expresses sadness, grief, loss, etc. that's not a major key. But then speed up "Taps" and put it to a swinging rhythm and it could be a sunny, up-tempo Broadway number. Maybe there's some deep link between happiness/sadness.
I like the way you think :) thank you for giving more content to share with everyone. That's a fantastic topic to talk about :)
Thank you for nice exlpain. I know aeolian, mixolydian ,ionian and dorian👍🎶
@manuelarichter586 you are very welcome Manuel. I hope it makes sense to you too
@NEEDFULSTRINGSLLC i am Manuela an older lady 🎵
@manuelarichter586 have a blessed day Manuela
Super Awesome Sauce !!! Thank you . One question . Do you need to change the unison strings to go from one tuning to the other ? I,m guessing no since there’s only 3 intervals difference .
@jamesmcdowell8441 if you mean "change the unison strings" as in the Guage it's actually dictated by the length of your dulcimer ( from nut to bridge) an average dulcimer can be tuned about 6 different tunings let's just say from D to G comfortably. I use the gages 20 for my bass and 10 for my middle and melody strings. .if you want to play baritone and you have a movable bridge you can get thicker strings , again depending on the distance from nut to bridge. I've strung up baritone using a 26 Guage and two 20 Guage. However just yesterday I had to tune someone's DAD baritone dulciner with 56 35 and 24 Guage I think it was that with the melody string anyways
@ Thank you . Makes thing easier to understand . I have built a few Irish Bouzkiis . I,ve always strung them up with 10 17 26 36 . Gauges . Regular guitar strings . Omitting the low E and the G strings . My tuning is GDAD or GDGD . My scale length I’d 25.5”
This way I,m just tuning down .
@jamesmcdowell8441 I bet they sound great!!!!
@ Amazing sound for sure . Adirondack Spruce top with Sapele back and sides . I,m still learning ., but it’s all fun . I,ve built several dulcimers a few years ago . I,m getting the dulcimer bug again .
Loved that. I need visual lessons thanks for showing on Dulcimer shapes. That's neat!!😊
@annhester3983 you are welcome :) remember if you have any questions you can always ask me if something goes over your head
"Wow, I am very proud of my friend Matthew, We all need music in our lives"- Ozark mountain hillbilly :) ❤
I like that tune you played.
@annhester3983 thank you very much :) I appreciate your kind words :)
oh my goodness, thank you for making this video. just ordered my first dulcimer that can currently only be tuned to DAD, and i've been googling for the past 2 days music theory things to try to explain how to transpose DAD tabs to DAA
@ordainedegg your dulcimer can be tuned daa as well. Intact its only restriction is the size of the string gages. If you like to watch more videos I'm gonna try to make them happen through the year to help explain a lot of things not communicated very well in the dulcimer community
Great information and helpful explanation. Thank you for doing this video. I appreciate it you sharing your knowledge.
@@MegaAmbil you are very welcome :) I hope that I made sense to you
That's the closest I ever heard a dulcimer come to sounding like a guitar.

Ok that is cute!! Do you sell that little dude? You should, it’s great.
Hey BanjoLemonade, I have started putting my little mountain man on some products. I have a local guy who makes me wooden picks. I also am thinking of making larger wood burned pictures. Also tying it in with Branson Mo. Thank for reaching out to me . Have you ever been down to branson before? THE shop used to be called Cedar Creek Dulcimers.
@ -Hey I live in North Georgia, so it’s a long way for me. Would love to visit someday - could do a workshop if that’s something y’all would want. If you’ll put it on a little plaque to hang on the wall I’d love to display that little guy. So cute. Also would be great on a coffee mug! Keep up the good mountain dulcimer work friend.
What is the name of this song? It is so nice! The sound is like a fairytale .😀🎶
@manuelarichter586 the song is called "Sink the Bismark " It's a fun little song written in 1960 by Johnny Horton
@NEEDFULSTRINGSLLC thanks
Man you play it fantastic. Is it normally being played on a desk or on your lap?
@orhanbbey haha thank you 😊 Yeah you can play it on the table a desk your lap in a recliner. You can have a strap and stand up with it if need be. But ergonomically you want it flat in front of you some how. Now if you play in your recliner, the only time you should put it away is during the game show jeopardy.... (chuckle)
Wonderful dulcimers . The melody is wonderful. 🎶👍thank you
@manuelarichter586 haha thank you very much! Which ones your favorite?

What are the prices on those "ancient of days" dulcimers?
@terrypublow7038 hahaha those "ancient of days dulcimers" are currently sitting at the $399.99 price point. I'll have to make a video on those two.
Hi Matt, Leonard from California, Doing great, good to see you 😀
@LeonardJackson-l7s thank you, you too Leonard! Hoe you are no where near them fires
@NEEDFULSTRINGSLLC thanks for your concern. Fire fighters and management are doing a great job. 👍 I was watching your video and thought you were very good, keep it up. 👌
@LeonardJackson-l7s for a first time live, I'd say that was not too bad. I know now at least how it feels to be on screen live now haha . Scary is what it is
@NEEDFULSTRINGSLLC you have no idea how many times I screwed up first time I had to talk in front of an audience. It was a disaster, but it taught me alot .I think you did pretty good 👍
@@LeonardJackson-l7s thank you very much for your kind words
Not sure if you still get on here, But would you happen to know the measurements, depth of cut for the frets and what type material to make the frets with? I'm wanting to build my own dulcimer, but don't know where to get started. Thanks.
Call me up this morning at the store. I'll be available after 10am central 417-334-1395 I think our roads are clear today. We'll it's possible at least .
@@NEEDFULSTRINGSLLC Alrighty, Will do... I didn't realize that you were a company or had a store... I've been wanting a dulcimer for awhile, but they are a bit high priced on ebay. So I'm hoping to make or find a neck that is fretted, keyed and has strings. Then I can build my own box.
@DolittleMccoy You also have the ability to get kits from me as well. My builder Chas has had a rough 4 yesrs,( being diagnosed with leukemia) but the last three months he has been providing me with already put together dulcimers. I say all this cause he will be making kits very soon as well. Our popular dulciners are called cedar creeks and walnut classics. I do have red meadows which are tear drop shaped left over from another builder of min in store as well. The kits are under $200
@@NEEDFULSTRINGSLLC Thanks alot for replying so fast... I've never played a Dulcimer, but always have had the interest. I really don't want to invest a lot into one until I know that it's something that I'd like to pursue... My apologies for holding you up and asking so many questions... Can you give me a ball park price of a dulcimer kit.. (Fretted Neck with keys and strings, without a box) And also what's the cheapest dulcimer that you have for sale at the moment. I do woodworking and would like to one day build one, but until I purchase one and understand the way that they're built, I'm interested in maybe purchasing one to begin with. Thanks
Wowwww!!!! That makes a lot of sense!!
I love it. Hope to copy it some day. Be really helpful if it was printed

@@carolinestagg6807 thats a beautiful one isn't it :)
The books are great
It would be better to have the dulcimers on a stand so they can resonate and reveal the sounds of "all" of the tonewoods.
Gosh the o’briens sound good too
Cedar creek walnut ❤ sounds so nice and different with that backing than all walnut… but the walnut woods are sooo pretty
Oh gosh both walnuts look amazing.. totally different looks but both beautiful 😂🥰 no wonder most of my dulcimers end up being walnut😂😜 I’m partial to patterns as well as straight esp when slight color variations
The cherry with lighter streaks closest to camera sound better to me of the first 2 but it was also closest 😂 but the cherry I got from you sounds bestest🥰

While that spalted maple looks gorgeous, I simply love the sound of the walnut one.
@@Rocketsong it's beautiful isn't it . If you don't already, it's easy to collect them .
goodness I'm sitting at work listening between work that comes in LOL! when Chas first started back a month or 2 ago I HAD to get the cherry walnut classic you played on that first video. love it. you also played a maple on that one and it was nice. different tunes you played and I know each is different but this maple one sounded so much different but the more I listened I could still hear something similar between them LOL! but both of these walnut tops sound similar to each other yet different from the cherry and maple - cherry and maple sound 'super happy' if that makes sense and the walnuts sound like they'd ring deep and strong for a while if just strumming- they have a pleasant sound for my ears. does that sound right? cherry and maple good if you don't want a lot of sustain or do the walnut classic with one of those woods for a medium? then walnut for lasting 'boom'?! you know, you could just grab one of those books with hymns, christmas songs and just play through it on all the dulcimers LOL 🤣🤣🤣
@@938quilt yeah I may have to play public domain music. I really like making my own stuff up cause it's more inspiring and no one can spot mistakes lol . I'm trying to show people that standards don't exist and that paper is what intimidates everyone. And your emotions are your emotions . I love expressing ones self cause everyone is different from one another .
can you play some more songs on that walnut walnut classic? maybe i just liked it with that song LOL! I was hoping for a different wood as I have other dulcimers all walnut but that one sounds amazing (ok hoping it sells fast when you open today HA! bye bye temptation!)
