Winter in Yellowstone | Canon R5 | Cold Weather
There are many reasons to visit Yellowstone National Park. But if you want to visit the park at its most magical time, it's in winter. Here is a quick little sampling of some footage from the park during February. As this video includes some scenes of animal predation, view discretion is advised. #yellowstonenationalpark #wildlifefilmmaking #wildlifefilmmaker #wildanimals #canonr5 #wildlifewonders #winterwildlife

Fight for Scraps
Переглядів 358Місяць тому
As the salmon return to the rivers to spawn here in British Columbia, bald eagles congregate to binge feed. Occasionally there are disagreements over the scraps. Here is a quick video showing a few eagles chasing each other for a few bits of salmon. Filmed on a Canon C400 with a Canon RF 200-800mm. #baldeagles #britishcolumbia #canonc400
Canon RF 200 800: A Quick Follow Up Review

About a year ago, I did the initial quick review of this fairly new Canon lens. A good friend was kind enough to lend me his copy for a short while and recently I purchased my own copy. So having put it through its paces in Patagonia, I thought I'd do a little follow up review. Essentially this is an incredibly versatile lens that comes in at a very decent price. No, it's not part of the L-seri...

Here are a few sample files from the new Canon C400. Not sure how much you'll be able to tell from a UA-cam video but thought I'd add a few clips on here anyway and let you be the judge of how useful it'll be to you. Please note that the files were rather quickly edited in Davinci. I'm NOT a particularly good video editor so it's very likely that you'll be able to grade the files much better. B...

    Thanks for the review. On the aperture people keep saying it is slow at f9. But it is 800mm.... what are the alternative at 800mm. A big prime that cost >10K$ and will still be only one stop faster, a shorter zoom with a 1.4x or a 2x that might be even slower ? You always will end up with a rather slow solution for 800mm unless you put a huge pile of cash at the problem. So f9 is not a drawback, it is what makes this lens smaller and lighter for what it is, a 800mm. If you have a good modern body that can produce good images at higher ISO, and use modern noise reduction software it works quite well

      I completely agree! It's a tradeoff that allows it to be a very versatile lens at an incredible price point. The Canon 600mm f4 will get you to 1200mm f8 with the 2x. But, as you correctly pointed out, it is a huge leap in cost. I’ve had zero regrets adding the 200-800 to my kit.

      Not yet! But I will likely try the 1.4x. The 2x makes the lens really slow at f18 - so don’t think I’ll spend the money on that one. I’m expecting the RF 1.4x to work as well as the EF version does on an EF lens. But you ask a good questions. Depends on the 200-800 as well.

    According to Canon USA the 200-800 is "Dust- and weather-resistant design". Under the 600 f4 lens they say that lens has a "dust and water resistant design". Not sure what the difference is between "weather resistance" and "water resistance", if there really is one. I'm sure the L lenses have a bit more "resistance", but it should be noted that neither lens, nor any lens made by Canon (or anybody, to my knowledge), is listed as being dust and weather "proof", which is why the warranty does not cover water damage. However, I got caught in a sudden downpour a few weeks ago with my 200-800. It didnt last long, but it got pretty wet and seems fine. This was in response to a comment below. Somehow it ended up here instead of under that comment about weather proofing.

    • @love4wildlife
      @love4wildlife Місяць тому

      I suspect most of the lens is quite well protected. I would, however, pay special attention to the extended barrel. Having said that, Ive had my 100-400 out in fairly wet conditions and I have not had any issues with it.

    Ref the stutter, mine does that, too. If you adjust the tension ring about a half inch towards tight seems to reduce the stutter without really effecting how hard it is to turn. Big thanks for mentioning this as I was about to exchange mine for a replacement. I'll wait a few months and send to Canon, maybe by then they'll have a repair that corrects it.

    For my shooting (mostly small, perched songbirds and such) this lens is the Holy Grail. Honestly, I wouldn't trade this lens for a 600 F4.... or 800 F5.6, as those lenses just don't have the versatility that I need. I find it perfectly fine in "very low light" by simply slowing my shutter WAY down when I have to. I get lots of tack sharp shots at 1/80th, but last week, I even got a bunch at 1/20th ! I've even used it in near darkness, with a the tripod and timer for shots at like 1/6th of a second, ISO 100.... razor sharp, and super clean :) (great for Owls and Nighthawks ;) It's funny with twitchy little birds that some folks say > never stop, the reality is, they stop "often"... just not for more than fractions of a second :) I just take a LOT of shots and almost always get some great ones :) Oh, of course I ALWAYS use a tripod, but I'm the oddball that would use a tripod with a microlight setup, in light so bright you needed sunglasses :) lol Extra stability will never hurt you, but can often help. Oh, and I use it on the APS-C R7.... which is a PITA, but I need the extra reach. No choice. I actually started with an R5 which was a better camera in nearly every respect, but just never enough reach. So I sold it and now have two R7's. I wouldn't really say that was a "great choice".... but rather, "my only choice". I'm trying to figure how I'm going to scrape together some $$$ for a second 200-800 now. I just think its crazy to do multi week, multi thousands of miles, cross country birding trips, and to hang everything on one long birding lens. HAVE to have a backup.

    • @love4wildlife
      @love4wildlife Місяць тому

      It’s amazing how well that lens performs even in the challenging conditions you’ve described. What I've found over the years is that there's never one single tool for all circumstances. Have said that, the 200-800 sure fills a lot of gaps.

    Great video, and I'm sure it will help a lot of people wanted to make the switch. On a more technical note, im wondering if you have tried any macro video stuff, as that's where Ive found it hardest to adapt. I'd like to think I have a reasonable idea of what im doing when it comes to macro photography, but without going down the route of buying sliders with motorised heads etc, I find I just have to stick with locked off static shots. Which is a bit disappointing. On a side note, when you were talking about some of the larger video heads, I was nodding vigorously. A friend of mine recently got the Oconnor 2650 video head for doing some film and tv work here, and it is an amazing bit of kit. But my god is it heavy. However, there's a reason it is the video head of choice for nearly all those wildlife people using that monster canon lens you spoke about. Where it really shines is when you are doing a tracking shot on the diagonal, and it remans silky smooth. Nearly any decent tried head can do a nice pan shot, or a smooth tilt up or down, but where you really see the differences in quality, is how well the head can help ou track a subjects smoothly off axis. I'm currently saving up to try and buy a decent 100mm tripod head, but it is quite a lot of money to invest.

    • @love4wildlife
      @love4wildlife Місяць тому

      I haven’t yet done a lot of macro work but it’s definitely on my list (which seems to be getting a lot longer - a great ‘problem’). I’ve been looking at sliders because I really like that camera movement while filming. As I’m sure you know, with macro that’s tough to do while maintaining proper focus without a slider. I’ve also been looking at the Laowa macro lens but it’s such a specialized piece of kit that I haven’t pulled the trigger on that. Regarding tripod heads, you are spot on. OConnor heads are amongst the very best in the business and for good reason. Even their old heads are incredibly solid - literally and quality wise. Appreciate you adding your thoughts. Thank you.

    • @gearoidosullivan356
      @gearoidosullivan356 Місяць тому

      @@love4wildlife Which of the Laowa macro lenses were you looking at? I have the 2nd version of their probe lens, the peri probe and it is a brilliant bit of kit, but it needs a lot of light (it's a t14!!). And you really do need a slider to get the most out of it. But it really does give a unique perspective. I saw their even newer version, the pro2be at a convention this year and they've upped the quality again, and improved the t-stop to a T8. But of course its more expensive.

    Have really enjoyed your videos on the switch from photo to filming. And I think you've nailed the majority of the issues for people switching. The only thing that springs to mind as an addendum, is to shoot a few seconds longer than you think you need for each clip, to allow yourself the space in the edit afterwards. This was an issue I found when doing event style videos as I was just trying to get as many different shots as I could, but then it wasn't that easy to make things flow into each other in the edit. Because in stills photography we are freezing the action, well, we can stop at any time. But for film, the movement of the subject or the camera can help dictate your shot. As for the editing, if you are still using Blackmagic and are considering buying the full version, you should look up a couple of their other products like their editing keyboards, or colour correction panels. Because some of those products come with the full software licence included for free. So something like the speed editor costs 395 and the full software licence comes with it, which is worth 275 on its own. Or the $800 cooler correction panel includes it too. But these mightily be for people doing a huge amount of video editing. They used to give away the full licence much easier, but ive noticed they're not including it as much now on their newer sub $500 products. But if fairness, they've been brilliant in updating and expanding the capabilities of the Davinci Resolve to the point where a load of editors that I know have switched from Adobe And Final Cut to Resolve for doing commercials, films and tv shows.

    I have used the RF200-800 almost every day for 3 months here in Montana. I use it only for photographs and wildlife. I like that is is fairly compact for packing and fairly sharp. The biggest con is for low light F/9 from 640mm out to 800mm. and also it is not weather sealed like L-series lens. I recently purchased this lens. I use it with my R5. Great follow up review on its use and agree with your assessment. I use it just for photography and wanted this lens for its reach for photographing birds and animals. I had to wait for almost 2 months to receive it, as the lens was on back order. So far I am very happy with it and the picture and autofocus quality are very good. I went with a friend to photograph some Bald Eagles and let him use it on his Canon R6 and he just ordered one this week, so he must of liked it too :)

    Very good review Henrik. I use a Sigma 60-600 mm lens and i love it. I also use a Sony FS7 Camcorder. Thanks for sharing😊

      Thank you. The lens choice vs the Sigma was something I debated for quite a while and the choice was not easy given the popularity of the Sigma for filmmakers.

    Did you use autofocus in bird footage? How it keeps moving birds?

    • @love4wildlife
      @love4wildlife 2 місяці тому

      Ahhhh good question. I did for some but not for others. If the bird was close enough, the AF did lock on and track the eye. It's not as good as what there was/is on the R5 and presumably the R5II as well. But I wonder if that's something that can be addressed with further updates. I'll be doing some more testing in the coming weeks. From the Canon website: "* Animal detection may not be possible with some animals. Subjects that are not dogs or cats may be detected as animals in some cases." If you're a hybrid shooter, you might want to look at the R3/R5II or the R1 once it comes out. For video only, I'm very happy with the C400 thus far. Triple native ISO and built in filters are great features.

      @@love4wildlife thank you for answer. I have one more question. Is it possible to take a still raw picture with c400? As hybrid shooter I like to do both film and still picture. What about timelapse functionality?

    • @love4wildlife
      @love4wildlife 2 місяці тому

      @@greenlifefilmnowak4585 If you are a hybrid shooter, I'd look at one of the other cameras. C400 does not take RAW images to my knowledge as it is not a hybrid camera like the R5/R5II/R3 or even the R6.

    I almost wish I never saw this. I'm going through this past summer's videos files and the ability to shoot very high ISO like these would make all the difference in the world.
