Deep Hole Drilling | Precision CNC Machining at Kelford Cams
Deep hole drilling is an advanced machining process that requires extreme precision, specialised tools, and the perfect setup to achieve flawless results. In this video, we take you behind the scenes at Kelford Cams to show how we use a solid carbide drill to achieve 40xD drilling, cutting 400mm deep with absolute accuracy.
From high-pressure coolant systems to precision setups within 2 microns, we ensure that every drilled hole meets the highest standards. Whether you’re into precision engineering, CNC machining, or high-performance engine components, this video will give you an inside look at the cutting-edge processes we use to manufacture world-class performance parts.
🔧 What is Deep Hole Drilling?
Deep hole drilling is a specialised machining technique used when the depth of the hole is significantly greater than its diameter-typically greater than a 10:1 depth-to-diameter ratio. Standard drills struggle with chip evacuation and precision at these depths, which is why specialised tools and cooling methods are required.
At Kelford Cams, we take deep hole drilling to the next level by using:
✅ A solid carbide drill - Ensuring maximum strength and durability.
✅ 40xD drilling capability - This drill is 10mm in diameter, meaning it can drill as deep as 400mm with precision.
✅ High-precision setup - Our operator clocks the drill to 0.002mm (2 microns) to prevent breakage and ensure accuracy.
✅ 600 PSI (40 bar) coolant pressure - This is crucial for perfect swarf evacuation, preventing clogging and ensuring a smooth cut.
✅ Material removal at 20mm per second - Speed and efficiency combined for optimal machining performance.
🔩 Why Deep Hole Drilling Requires a Perfect Environment
Unlike standard drilling, deep hole drilling is an advanced process that requires:
• Ultra-precise machine calibration to avoid tool breakage.
• Specialised coolant systems to keep the drill from overheating.
• Continuous swarf evacuation to prevent chips from blocking the hole.
• High-speed material removal to maintain efficiency without compromising quality.
If the setup isn’t perfect, the drill can break, ruining the part and potentially damaging the machine. That’s why only top-tier manufacturers invest in the right tools, technology, and expertise to get it right-just like we do at Kelford Cams.
🏁 Why This Matters for Performance Engine Components
Kelford Cams specialises in high-performance cam shafts and cam gears, and precision machining is at the heart of what we do. Every part we manufacture is engineered to handle extreme conditions, high RPM, and race-level performance.
Deep hole drilling plays a crucial role in ensuring our components are:
✔ Lightweight yet strong - Optimised material removal without compromising integrity.
✔ Perfectly balanced - Preventing vibration and unnecessary wear in high-performance applications.
✔ Consistently accurate - Every part meets the tightest tolerances for race-proven reliability.
🚗 Who Benefits from This Technology?
Deep hole drilling is widely used in industries such as:
• Motorsport & Performance Tuning - Engine builders rely on precision-machined components for peak performance.
• Aerospace Engineering - Aircraft components require ultra-lightweight, high-strength materials.
• Medical & Industrial Manufacturing - High-precision drilling is essential for medical devices and industrial tools.

    Can you DLC a camshaft fellas? Why / Why not?

    • @Kelford-Cams
      @Kelford-Cams 4 дні тому

      Technically you could, however DLC is very expensive so its not cost effective solution. Also DLC needs a very smooth surface to adhere to and some parts of camshafts aren't always a perfect surface so we could have times where it comes off.

    How woild on go About degreeing a rb25det series 1/2 with hydrolic lifters? The neo cam with solid lifters but hydraulic you would have the possibility of the lift not being accurate if the lufter is not been lashed via oil pressure when running. Would a solid lifter need to be installed on each cam to measure or do the nvcs cams come as a drop in with factory timming?

    • @Kelford-Cams
      @Kelford-Cams 3 місяці тому

      Hey Leon, thanks for the question! The S1/2 Hydraulic bucket is always in contact with the cam lobe because of the little spring inside the bucket, so any movement from the cam will move the top of the bucket where your pointer will be. The valve on the other hand wont see the full movement that the cams has applied because the lifter could bleed down, this wont matter when it comes to decreeing up your cams. Thank you 😀

    • @Kelford-Cams
      @Kelford-Cams 3 місяці тому

      Hey mate, glad you liked the video! Good question, 114° is half of the 228° duration we found so essentially it is how many degrees after opening that it will take until we reach maximum lift. However, as our opening point was not until 9° after top dead centre, we need to add the 9° to the 114° to make our centreline relative to TDC. This is how we wind up with a peak lift centreline of 123° after top dead centre. I hope this helps ")

    Curve is practically all that needs to be looked at here. Big number , lazy curve

    • @kingnorlen
      @kingnorlen 7 місяців тому

      NOT a lazy curve at all... Dont know what ur referencing or comparing it to, but for a 2liter engine its a GREAT curve. Remember that RB20's are built to rev, with shorter stroker than the 25, 26 or 30's!

    • @WraithDeath
      @WraithDeath 7 місяців тому

      @kingnorlen you can quite literally see how extremely gradual of a climb the curve is. RB20's are known for being lackluster in their low end torque due to their small stroke and bore sizing and this is no exception As well as how dreadfully poor their heads flow as well
