MIT Corporate Relations
Приєднався 24 жов 2014
MIT Corporate Relations aids and directs companies interested in multidisciplinary involvement with the Institute. It offers industry access to MIT through two integrated programs, the MIT Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) and MIT Startup Exchange.
The Industrial Liaison Program is instrumental in providing connections to MIT faculty, departments, labs, and centers. It serves companies across the globe and is organized both geographically and by industry. MIT Startup Exchange actively promotes collaboration and partnerships between MIT-connected startups and industry. Qualified startups are those founded and/or led by MIT faculty, staff, or alumni, or are based on MIT-licensed technology. Industry participants are principally members of MIT’s Industrial Liaison Program (ILP).

7:50 Digitalized vs. Digitized
Here is the complete text of the speaker throughout the video: [0:23] One of the things that Rob mentioned when we got started was the idea that renewables were beginning to play a larger and larger fraction in the delivery of electrical power to the grid. Fossil generations domain is still a large part of this, but as renewables become a larger and larger fraction, we become more exposed to the intermittent seas associated with those forms of electricity generation. And those intermittent seas can be on the seconds to days and even seasonal lengths. And so we have to figure out ways with which to buffer that to enable delivery to the grid without uncompetitive costs. The way that's done typically now is through Pumped hydro electric storage. [2:56] What I'd like to do is pick up a little bit on what Professor Sadoway was talking about earlier and some of the things that also Rob talked about a bit earlier, which is the differences in design for batteries for the grid as compared to the batteries that we've designed before hand. I'm going to focus on redox flow batteries and what I'll try to do is give you some sense as to what's going on in the redox flow battery space, what are the challenges that we face, and then I'm going to try to finish with maybe a few things that I believe to be Grand Challenges, although I wouldn't say that that would be an all encompassing a list. [6:42] The basic components of a redox flow battery are the active redox species, the supporting electrolyte, the ion exchange membrane, and the flow field and porous electrode design. So in principle, you can tune those different components to get the performance that you want. The nice thing about redox flow batteries is that you can decouple the power and the energy rating. So the power rating is determined by the size of the electrochemical cell stack, whereas the energy rating is determined by the volume of the electrolyte tanks. [9:48] Redox flow batteries are particularly interesting for long-duration, energy-intensive grid storage applications due to their ability to scale energy capacity independently of power. So as you increase the volume of electrolyte, you can increase the amount of energy that you can store without necessarily having to change the power output of the device. And this is in contrast to more conventional battery technologies where the energy and power are quite tightly coupled. [12:52] The vanadium redox flow battery is the current state of the art in flow battery technology. It takes advantage of vanadium's ability to exist in multiple stable oxidation states. And so you can use a single element as both the anolyte and the catholyte, which provides some simplifications in terms of the chemistry and the balance of plant. [19:52] To try to connect the materials properties to the system-level cost and performance targets, our research group has been using a technology, an approach called techno-economic modeling. And the idea here is to try to model the different components of a redox flow battery system, both at the material scale as well as at the system scale, to then try to identify the key cost drivers and the key performance metrics that are going to dictate the overall viability and competitiveness of redox flow battery systems. [25:13] We use these design maps to try to identify promising materials and system configurations that can meet the cost targets that we believe are necessary for redox flow batteries to be competitive in the long-duration grid storage market, on the order of $100 per kilowatt hour. [29:40] In addition to the vanadium system, a lot of research has also gone into exploring alternative redox-active chemistries. And these could be things like tailored organic molecules or even inexpensive, earth-abundant materials like sulfur. The idea here is to try to reduce the cost of the active materials while still maintaining good electrochemical performance. [31:46] The key challenges moving forward are really going to be about guided synthesis of these materials with the precise properties that we need, coordinated design of the molecules and the membranes that go into these systems, and then really quantifying and mitigating the various decay mechanisms that can occur in redox flow batteries over long-term operation.
Cool, but can't proteins just be made within the cell?
Thank you so much for this amazing video! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
Lunar geospatial analytics represents a critical frontier for advancing humanity's understanding of extraterrestrial terrains. However, a significant strategic knowledge gap persists, analogous to the "underwater problem" on Earth, where vast regions of the oceans remain unexplored. Similarly, large swaths of the Moon's surface and subsurface are poorly understood, despite its strategic importance for scientific discovery, resource extraction, and potential human settlement. This gap poses challenges for both exploration and security. For example, without comprehensive lunar mapping and data integration, efforts to identify critical resources like water ice or rare minerals remain speculative. Furthermore, the lack of clear geospatial intelligence could impede international coordination or even exacerbate geopolitical tensions as nations vie for lunar assets. To address this, investments in advanced remote sensing, AI-driven geospatial analysis, and international collaboration are essential. Lessons from Earth's underwater exploration can inform methodologies, emphasizing the need for scalable and cost-effective technologies that combine robotic systems, satellites, and in-situ observations. Bridging this knowledge gap will not only enhance our lunar capabilities but also prepare humanity for broader interplanetary endeavors.

Are we thinking about how to store excess solar energy from the solar panels? I thought Donald Trump wasn't into that science.
Another electrowetting startup! Very exciting! Hope you succeed! MIT's 5 layer hydraulic micromotor is one of the most complicated electrowetting device I ever saw.

Amazing explanation of a fantastic solution, Catherine
Brilliant. AI co-author for scientists, engineers, and product teams!
Great explanation. I think the potential for applying these techniques to manufacturing processes and creating smart products is enormous. Thanks for sharing this.
This is one of the best pitches I've seen. Really impressive. The only thing missing might be a short discussion of dozens of other potential applications in fields such as medicine.
What do you think about PRP for joint OA stabilization?
I don't know exactly what they are looking for. Are they looking for people who work at Intel? TMC? Perhaps with a little more specificity we could help. Also their website, while nice looking, doesn't really say anything of value. Perhaps it could have a link to this video on it? I as a layman was following along until about 2:28-3:28. Then it got super specific with engineering, without a lot of great comparisons or examples of why it is so much better. Perhaps in a longer discussion you explain how the actuators work, as I am familiar with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic actuators, but I have never heard of an actuator in a chip before. I know there are lots of UA-camrs who love talking about AI, and you could go speak on their podcast to get attention for the kinds of people and potential capital partners you'd need in order to build out these pieces of machinery. Perhaps you could explain how this by saying something like "stacking of chips could increase capacity of the current AI chips by 10x with potential for more" or something. Hope this helps!

It's such a shame that this information isn't shared in a way that is easy to hear. The music is so loud that for those of us with challenges hearing already are overwhelmed and can't listen.
