Neat trick but why bother with the electrolyzer, the compressor, the trucks, and the shipping? Electricity is more useful than hydrogen, there are lots of things you can do when cheap electricity is available from the grid besides make and store hydrogen. BEVs will be even cheaper to recharge, industry can pre-heat, pre-cool, and run energy-intensive processes, etc. It's only 5 miles from Shipinsay to Kirkwall on the mainland, that's easily within range of a battery-powered ferry. The much-touted "hydrogen economy" is a follow-on from the real story here, which is the "intermittently very cheap renewable electricity economy."

Ideally the electricity generated would be used directly for some of the applications you mention, but as with much of the grid in Scotland, the Orkney grid is now very constrained and most of the wind turbines on the island are controlled by an Active Network Management system which turns them down or off altogether when generation is high and local demand is low. We're involved in all sorts of projects looking at ways to maximise the amount of generation and runtime from these community turbines by either storing the energy until it's required, or by bringing on flexible loads that can respond to signals and come on to avoid turbines being curtailed - for instance the Heat Smart Orkney project is helping deliver low-cost heat to householders by turning on space and water heaters in local homes, utilising energy that otherwise couldn't be generated. Rest assured we are working on a lot of projects involving battery electric vehicles too, including a big one we can't talk about just yet! All that said we're convinced that hydrogen has a really important role for all sorts of applications, including longer ferry routes, but also short ones like the Shapinsay ferry which operates regularly, meaning short refuelling times are key.
