Bruce Springsteen - Darkness On The Edge Of Town 78
Filmed at Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ. 19-9-1978
Lyrics:
They're still racing out at the Trestles,
But that blood it never burned in her veins,
Now I hear she's got a house up in Fairview,
And a style she's trying to maintain.
Well, if she wants to see me,
You can tell her that I'm easily found,
Tell her there's a spot out 'neath Abram's Bridge,
And tell her, there's a darkness on the edge of town.
Everybody's got a secret, Sonny,
Something that they just can't face,
Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it,
They carry it with them every step that they take.
Till some day they just cut it loose
Cut it loose or let it drag 'em down,
Where no one asks any questions,
or looks too long in your face,
In the darkness on the edge of town.
Some folks are born into a good life,
Other folks get it anyway, anyhow,
I lost my money and I lost my wife,
Them things don't seem to matter much to me now.
Tonight I'll be on that hill 'cause I can't stop,
I'll be on that hill with everything I got,
Lives on the line where dreams are found and lost,
I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost,
For wanting things that can only be found
In the darkness on the edge of town.

Good song! Your welcome!💕
Oh ya, that guy on the drum set he pretty good.
I received this box set in cassette, and I successfully wore out all three cassette tapes. Such great live music.
Raw and the way I saw him
The BEST live version. I cry every single time I hear it while driving in my car and at a concert. The piano is superb, and the cinematic music and the storyline of the young promise of freedom meet the harsh world of the aging process. And how young love, both with your fav car and your girl, goes through the trials of real life. The past will always haunt you if you don't heal it and heal yourself. 💯🏎️🏍️
GRETINGS FROM TRANI SOUTH ITALY. Il prossimo Maggio di nuovo al tuo fianco!
Dalle parti della LEGGENDA!
The Big Man on the Sax at the end, just amazing how he holds that note R. I. P Clarence really miss you.
the way he sings the line Bobby Jean adds a lot to this performance.Possibly the definitive version
2:50 Clarence has big balls. Big.
Grit, guts, heart and soul!
This is in the top 5 of his best songs and the Darkness tour back in '78 was the best tour.... Winterland in Dec of '78 I think was the best concert....
This is why I love Bruce Springsteen and why everyone who doesn't is wrong.
Super
the loving relationship man-car, it is an icon in the american way of life. I've loved some cars, some places and some photo cams
Grew up with Bruce and his music all my life and this is my favorite live version of this song by far.
Tune Unfolds like a book.
How rough and harsh is this 👌🏻
moet dr bij geweest zijn kpud zweet
sound is amazing !
My favorite recorded version of this song. Something about the slow burning tempo and Roy's cascading piano here brings out all the regret in the lyric.
Regret. Yes! Love this explanation. 💯
Tremendous song. I think my favorite part, though, is the three-minute instrumental at the end.
Same! 💯💯💯💯
You should see the álbum ( LP ) cover of this sesión, it's so incredible . .
you can really feel the ugly rage in Bruce's performance here. It's so good
Wow, amazing.
I remember when it came out. I was in high school and was just discovering music beyond pop. Not my favorite, but nonetheless incredible. He's an artist, songwriter, musician and not just some producer's puppet being told what to play. Good stuff.
Can't wait for the video performance of this on The Ties That Bind box set!!!
this one always does it for you
Gutted that I missed this song in the first two or three at Wembley stadium 1985
Bruce.
More feeling Bruce. More feeling ;)
Darkness on the edge of my world Seeking for my shadow
After seeing and hearing an unfathomable amount Bruce shows (and making it a point to hear every version of this song I can find) this is my vote for his best performance of all time. You can see and hear everything about the man and his music by this clip. You can damn near feel the anger and desperation he is channeling to make it the performance that it is....and it's the most powerful thing I've ever heard.
That's awesome. You're spot on. Warren is my second favorite writer after Bruce so it's great to see someone else thinking along those lines. Just like you, from a personal stand point it gets to me more than any other. There's not a word or emotion that I don't identify with. I've wound up with a lot of inner demons and my actions because of those reasons, and the way I dealt with them, put me exactly in that darkness. Mainly because of drug use, the "I lost my money and I lost my wife" and "wanting things that can only be found" lines hit me most. He's the best there is at writing songs that, even if the experience is different, everyone can connect it to something in their life. Another reason I love the '78 performances of the song so much is the lyric change "You can drive all night and never make it around, through that Darkness..." I wish he would've kept that in.
+Blind Terry Tucci I agree 100% man, well said.
+Blind Terry Tucci bruce is the greatest bro. Shit has helped me through some dark times. I'm 27 and I remember when I was 18 and first time I heard Thunder Road I started crying because I felt someone else understood how I felt throughout my teenage years. I'll never forget that in my life. I'd love nothing more than to see Bruce at a dive bar and just simply walk up, buy him a beer and say thank you. That's it. No pictures. Nothing. Just a thank you.
This and Youngstown in Madison Square Garden 2000
Best performance I've seen. Nothing better than a young artist going for broke, believing 100%.
I hear you got a nice rich house somewhere T, I know you do wanna see me- and you know where to find me.. We always said it that never was gonna change. Backstreets til the end.
Best version!
FANTASTIC song. Seems to have nothing in special, but then hit right in the point!
WE LIKED THE SAME MUSIC, WE LIKED THE SAME BANDS, WE LIKED THE SAME CLOTHES....... I WHISED I HAVE KNOW , I WHISED I HAVE TO TALK YOU ...AND YOU'LL HEAR ME SING THIS SONG, IF YOU DO YOU I´M THINKING OF YOU....
perfect song for jogging in the park, great.
One of his best. It use to be when this song was played, we sat intotal silence. I saw him do this in giant stadium & these two yuppies who where have shit faced talked through the whole song. They never heard of it. I wish I could have thrown them from the 300 section onto the stage. Too many assholes at his shows now. Plus he seems to forgot, times are tough & $100 + for a ticket. parking gas, a $45 T shirt, he should be ashamed of himself! He has more money than the pope & he just like the pope, still got his greedy mitts out. Rich man wanna be king KING AIN'T SATISFIED TIL HE RULES EVERYTHING. Spend it in good help while we all suffer. And being an Obama guy....you are lost in the flood of money, ego & power. But the 70's & 80's I'll never forget.
+Frank Footer Probably rained the day of the show too which was his fault. Screwy rationalization about an artist whose music you seem to think a lot of. Yeah, why can't we all go to a BRUUUCE show for nothing and why does he have to have political views that are different than mine? Because those views are an extention of his song lyrics that's why. Always makes me laugh when big picture, rockheads want Dems/musicians and artistes to work for free. Good thing you have your memories though. Just in case you forgot to live out all those ideas about sharing the wealth, from way back then.
..... I WISHED I WOULD HAVE KNOWN , I WISHED I COULD TALKED TO YOU......
Briliant....
This song is number one in the year 1977 RY (radio young) Costa Rica
The best Rock'n Roll shirt of all times .
Thanks for posting - sounds funny but it made me cry! Love that album so powerful!
1973-1984 Bruce is untouchable.
Heard this song for the first time exactly 7 months earlier on the boardwalk during a band practice. The album wasn't out yet, and this was quite a departure from the first 3 albums... I'll never forget that day.
May 18th, 1978, me and my buddy at the Paramount Theatre, Asbury Park, Nj...Bruce and the band playing this song at a practice session...the album wasn't out yet...'never forgot that day. Brilliant musician and lyricist, great band...that was a great summer and the time was right.
