Changing Seasons: bringing you the best of Croydon's music scene
When Vivaldi wrote his Four Seasons in 1723, the world was a different place. As nature continues to inspire art, Vivaldi’s piece remains popular and still has a place in today’s society. But how do we respond when the world around us is changing?
Changing Seasons is our new multi-genre spectacular, created as a reflection on the climate emergency and its impact on our future. This exciting production mixes Vivaldi’s classic with new commissions from four talented local arts groups. Working with professional composers Fiona Brice and Sarah Freestone, four community groups - Queer Croydon, Club Soda, Subrang Arts and CMA - will perform their unique pieces which have been inspired by the seasonal themes in Vivaldi’s music. These new works respond to our changing world, creating a fusion of genres and art forms that culminate in a spectacular performance at Fairfield Halls.
Complete with new poetry from Croydon poet Jeremiah Brown, dance performances and engaging video content to introduce each artist, Changing Seasons is an accessible and proudly Croydon-made performance suitable for audiences of all ages.
As part of this event, we’re hosting a free afternoon showcase in the public open spaces of Fairfield Halls, featuring local talent from over 30 music and dance groups.

    A pipe organ does not have a sustain pedal like a piano or any other means of sustaining a note on the keyboard other than holding down a key to make it sound. So a pipe organ must be played with careful fingering to move quickly from key to key. The previous key is released a split second before the next note is played. Otherwise a pipe organ piece sounds choppy & unpleasant to listen to.

    And: The piano is a string instrument. Its keys are bouncy. The organ is a wind instrument and if you play on a fully manual organ, and you register all stops down on the first manual, you have to press keys with a weight of 500 gramm. People sometimes ask me why I am so shitty and still playing in public. I always answer, that they can try to do it better, sitting here in the 5 degree cold church for hours, with cold hands, pressing keys down, that weight 1,5 kilo per hand, while reading sheets and trying to concentrate on techniques. Yeah... you are welcome to fight me, guys. Surely you can do it better... 😒

      More like a flute is a woodwind. A recorder or a traversiere are made of wood, but a modern flute is made of metal. So are the organ pipes, some are built in wood, some are made of metal.

    I feel a strong sense of jealousy as I watch the techniques each musician has developed to work together and create a symphony. As a music major, I have this intense desire to play in one, but my disabilities have held me back from mastering the necessary techniques on my instrument. I admire every instrument in a symphony and aspire to master them all to increase my audition chances. Honestly, I don’t mind what instrument I play; I just want to be part of an orchestra. I’m currently seeking ways to enhance my abilities by pursuing a music performance degree, which I believe will be beneficial. Share your secrets! I’m constantly practicing, but you all are such an inspiration to me.

    A delightful performance of a legendary composition by obviously master musicians. I'm just not sure what the hurry is with virtually all the modern renditions of this magnificent piece. The ears can pick up so much more when this symphony, especially the third and fourth movements, are played at a slower pace. Such a shame to rush through the mesmerizing magic of Mozart!

    • @CloudyMcCloud00
      @CloudyMcCloud00 3 місяці тому

      I actually rejected two other YT versions (Cantata Camerata & Frankfurt Radio Symphony) for that exact reason - if you think this one is fast you should hear them! On the whole, I found the tempi here (directed by the invisible Simon Blendis) to be pretty good - in fact, I felt the finale, if anything, could be a bit more zippy (if they could handle it). It was the “slow” movement, to my ears, where it seemed like they couldn’t wait to be rid of it! But, in general, I know what you mean about modern trends - and not only in this piece, of course.

    • @VelocityOfAFallingRock
      @VelocityOfAFallingRock 3 місяці тому

      @@CloudyMcCloud00 Yes, I've listened to them all pretty much, including HvK's and Bernstein's recordings, and they universally just can't wait to get through the piece. Presently on YT, there is a remastered 1960 recording of this symphony by Wiener Phil. under the direction of Ferenc Fricsay--a "reference recording"--that's definitely worth a listen. The problem there is that for my taste anyway, the first and especially the second mvmts. are a bit too slow (just can't seem to win...the old Goldilocks tale! LOL), but the clarity of the remastered work is truly remarkable. And Fricsay absolutely nails the last two mvmts. of this otherworldly composition, to the point of giving me goosebumps and bringing me to tears every time I listen. I highly recommend it!

    • @CloudyMcCloud00
      @CloudyMcCloud00 3 місяці тому

      @@VelocityOfAFallingRock Aha! I've yet to find a recording of this that really nails it - and Fricsay's is the one I have been meaning to check out just recently as I've seen it popping up in my feed and somehow it looked interesting. So thank you for the prompting. Years ago, I acquired Bernstein's "famous" rendition and immediately hated it (wasn't it ridiculously slow, though?). I also have HvK set of "late" Mozart symphonies - and the #40 is the only one I can't get on with (and can't remember exactly why as I never listen to it!). It's a wonderful work of genius, to be sure, though. I should definitely look up the Fricsay! (Just tried the opening of Bernstein with the BSO on YT, btw: a bit slow for me, but only a tad! 🤷‍♂)

    • @VelocityOfAFallingRock
      @VelocityOfAFallingRock 3 місяці тому

      @@CloudyMcCloud00 YVW. Just wanted to add that for me, this symphony is all about mvmts. III & IV. If the conductor misses on either one, it's an automatic "Next!"

      @Yoandstuff Місяць тому

      I came to the comment section because I had to make sure I wasn't the only one that thought it was a little fast. I didn't realize it but the rendition I heard first was at Ferenc Fricsay's direction, like you recommended in another comment. Definitely my preferred performance.
