Bailey and Fishing is my youtube channel where I will be bringing you tutorial style films that pass on the experience I have gained from over 40 years of fishing.
John Bailey's Float fishing for Carp Challenge
In this video I challenge myself to catch a specimen carp on the float at a top flight carp water and a carp off the top ,in one day. I love catching carp but I like to do it my way- up close and personal the Crabtree way. Watch as in part one I discuss the tactics and approach I use and battle to land a near 30lb Mirror carp on the float with light tactical.

Fo...
Beautiful fish.
Shame this was rendered unwatchable by the god awful music
At Butlers ' I was a confident person...7 years after Living with you... I'm a mess...narsassitic bastard
Mr Crabtree AGAIN!!! & You've got Gillers involved!!!
Hi John, did I see you fishing in Ireland on the River Barrow above St .Mullins in 1981? The Embassy Challenge fishing competition was held on the Barrow for first time.
The music is very annoying mate... Just talk about the fishing technique's
Absolutely brilliant sir, that was one heck of a carp, excellently played with time and patience and also experience. Great to see Robbie as well, have also been following some of his exploits too. O'h yes, I've hit the bell 🔔 🤪 ready for part two. Cheers Les.
Great Video John. Returning to fishing after a three decade hiatus, & now in my 60s, I had yet to catch a tench! I now have 3, (with a PB of 5.5lbs)… All caught on your boilie/hair rig. The venues were not gravel pits, having a water depth of just 3-4 feet, but fishing two feet over depth worked just fine. Thank you very much for your tips and technique. Regards Chris
The music that covered the video is awfull 😢 very loud 🔊 and depressive , sorry .
Yeah losevthe music,,spoils vid
Wonderful video - thank you for sharing your knowledge
Not too sure how a tench struggles with 3 maggots and a size 14 hook, but can suck up a boillie and size 12? Corn, lobwoms, mussels (in the good old days), paste, the tench always managed to pick them up.
Hi John just watched your float carp fishing video where would I get a Hardy Marksman rod ?? Steve
Great information, argh that awful musac annoyingly intrusive.
How can 3 maggots weight more than a boilie?
Shame the sound is so bad
If the tench can see the shot it can see the swivel so really doesn't matter.
The music...... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
dont ask carp anglers anything whilethey are there fishing, they dont want yu any where near them lol
Great video. Full of useful facts. Though one thing stood out. Tench eat boilies. We know that. Carp fishermen catch Tench on 15mm boilies and bigger ones. But then you say that a bunch of 3 maggots and a hook is to heavy for them to suck up! But a hook and a 15mm boilie is a lot _HEAVIER_ than a hook with a bunch of 3 maggots on. That's just a bit contradictory to me. However. I've always found that a 12 or 14 hook with a whole dendrobaena worm cut in two _(So you have the whole worm but in two pieces on the hook.)_ is something that Tench will not pass up.
Got these thinking they were the slightly larger Panfish floats ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU they work just fine. The smaller size lets me carry more in my tackle box, and the 3 color choices are nice for different lighting conditions, backgrounds, etc. They aren't the most durable things in the world. But, as cheap as they are, it's not heartbreaking to lose one or have to replace a worn one. The price on these fluctuates wildly, from about $9 to almost $16. So, time your buy accordingly.
❤🎉😂
Perfect set of bobbers for different lengths and weights.
John would you make some more videos please
Great advise...but that music was F ing awful...why??
Superb video, the fine art of fishing.
Great video very good tips. Were you fishing at Rockland mere.Well done
Anyone got an idea of the fixed spool he's using?
How many carp do you catch that smash you to pieces ? 😂😂
John what is ur fav tench feed , and how much do you add to a swim ,
Fantastic tips in this video. Thanks John. 👏👏👏
Forgot to mention he's pre baited that margin for 3 months lol. No seriously it's a nice change to see someone fishing close in on float. Its true you don't need a 4oz fixed lead to hook a carp. In fact bearing in mind it's all they encounter from carp clones it's no wonder they have to sit there all week to wait for one with more hunger than sense to come along. More vids John
If you gonna b all nice n traditional seems a pity to fish for tench on float fished boilies! In my experience it's hard to fish float on any sort of big pit unless you fish on the back of the wind, with the waves, water flow etc. Those Polaris type floats give the bite sensitivity of the float but u also get to anchor it in position with a light lead. Also they automatically set at the right depth so no messing wi plumbing depth. They ideal for pit float fishing for tench compared to a normal waggle float.
Really helpful for the shy tench in my local pit and a quality video.. straight up facts what more can you ask. Hope you are well John. Thank you
I see you were using micro barbed hooks you should know better the damage they do to fish with rubbery lips please throw them away
Love it. Thanks
The crap music spoilt what I expected of you, shame you spoilt it Edited to say I cannot watch any more because of the sh1te music
I've just had my interest in Tench rekindled by this video. Can't wait to get out there and give it a go. Thanks for the video, looking forwards to the next one
Ditto
It is not always about what you catch, but how you do so. I have most of John's books. Just started reading 'Mossymere', but not too much about carp or tench fishing in there so far. I wanted to escape from the nonsense of the modern world. You can't go wrong with a John Bailey book for the atmosphere of the waterside, thought I, so I picked up 'Mossymere', written in 1988, so I expected vintage Bailey fishing tales. I was hoping to read about early morning tench fishing, mist rising off the water and the red-topped float amongst a fizz of bubbles in the reeds. None of that in the first chapter. I was a bit disappointed, so I flicked through and ended up on page 60. This is much more like it, thought I. Down by the reed-fringed estate lake, on the jetty. Must be a tench or carp session. I started to read: "Brown. Brown her hair flowing under her shoulders, over the strewn clothes". What?🤔🤔 "Strewn clothes"? Ah, perhaps he hooked a leviathan that has snagged him in the reeds, so he is going in with the net. This is all very well, thought I, but which baits is he using John? I was hoping that this bloke was using bite alarms, as he certainly wasn't concentrating on his float. I read on. "He kissed her thighs, her stomach, her breasts, he wanted to kiss every pore as her fingers played along his back and pulled at his hair, clamping their mouths together. Their bodies bucked . . ." 🤔😳 WTF? No mention at all of shotting patterns, prebaiting, swim preparation or the relative merits of boilies versus traditional baits. Certainly not the classic stillwater fishing I was hoping for. I looked around for the dustjacket. On the front it says "A spellbinding story of forbidden love and sensuality". 🤔 Ah, that explains the lack of angling. It's a novel! It is all such a long way from 'In Visible Waters' and 'Travels With a Two Piece', that's for sure!
Hi John, what reel is that? Is it usable for trotting as well as stillwater?
good video, BAD music
Great, but no need for the awful background 'music' (for want of a better word)
When describing your float rig, although you say there's no shot down the line I can see a tiny swivel attaching your hook link. What size swivel do you use and what length is the hook link?
Nice video, but oh my giddy aunt that tune was annoying!
Surly, if the wind blows and moves the float, the bait will move too. Then the hook could get covered in weed, blunt the hook, catch on the bottom and impede any strike? Do you deep hook any fish John on this set up? I'm all for simple, but it also has to be efficient too?
Amazing
This music is the opposite of fishing
I have caught tench in Nordic Winds in sweden it was 18degrees wind 5m/s in 0.70cm depth it was not deeper then 1M
Really good, I fish a lake with lots of carp , so I will try this for the tench , some very big tench, but the carp always bully out the tench!!
Brilliant video, exactly the same way I fish for carp 👍👍
