How to Play Modes...
What are modes? There’s a lot of information about modes out there, so we are going to talk specifically about them in the context of the Blues. It's good to have a use for a music theory idea like modes, rather than just talking about that.
Modes are related to chords, and if we understand the chords of the Blues, we can pick modes that will correlate with those chords!
Let's get started,
Clayton

Great lesson. Your guitar was way hotter than your mic. I had to keep adjusting my volume throughout this video. You are a great teacher.
Thanks for the feedback! Working on getting those things right for the future. And thanks for the kind words.
There is a stage in becoming a musician called "Thinking in Thirds"...you eat, sleep and breath "the odd scale tones"...starting at each of the 7 notes...in every key...this is called “spelling the chord”…eventually you can rattle off the notes in every chord in every key...then you do 7th chords…and then all the extensions, Sus, etc. Don’t forget when playing triads there are 4 adjacent string sets to play them: EAD-ADG-DGB-GBE…Then there are non-adjacent string sets…the fun never stops. Guitar is infinitely more complex than the piano.🎹 <🎸
Yup! Thinking in Thirds is integral. And you're right you do have to eat sleep breathe it. The fun definitely never stops! Thanks for watching
Wow. You described me perfectly. My car gets pretty banged up. I'm starting to understand why I crash as I come across out of key chords and how to play over them. The problem I have is when trying to figure out songs by ear I may get the 1 4 5 of the song I just can't seem to find the other in key or out of key chords in a bridge or chorus. Perhaps a lesson on how you find those missing chords by ear video would be helpful. Then a follow up lesson on how to play over that section of the song. Ken
Great idea! I'm hoping to make some more videos about ear training and identifying chords by ear. But you're right, those out of key chords are the ones that are the most challenging and require this kind of approach. Thanks for watching.
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for this lesson!!! ❤️🔥🎸❤️🔥
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
This is an excellent lesson! 👍🎸🎼
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it!
Well why love piano, cause in piano you don't play of chords, you play the chords and the melody above it. After learning piano I became so much better at guitar improvisation
I definitely think having the understanding of the melody in relation to the chords below is incredibly valuable. So maybe guitar players miss that!
@@musicbyclaytones always good to explore other instruments. im a guitar player originally and its still my main instrument but i love piano
What are you even on about?
Don’t let the jazz people see this
I love this song. You do an excellent job covering it and explaining how/why it sounds so great.
Thanks for watching, and the kind words!
This Keith guitar lick is in open G tuning, not standard tuning. Nice introductory guitar lesson.
True! These triads can translate but yes he played that 5 string open G tuning which just sounds amazing. Thanks for watching
Not helpful at all
Im a music teacher and this inspired me. Great ideas- awesome video
Thanks for watching! Glad it was inspiring!

Great lesson
Thank you!
Great lesson on a rock & roll classic...
A classic indeed! Thanks for the kind words
Very sweet ❤❤ I love the sound and the licks
Thanks!
Hi Clayton: I've just started learning triads and your lesson on Beast of Burden opened up a whole new world for me to explore. Very detailed explanation. Thanks for the lesson. Loved it.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad to hear it was helpful. Keep at it! Triads are so cool and are a great way to move around the neck
For learning purposes, I did some stem separation (AI) so you can hear the isolated guitar from this track - ua-cam.com/video/uvPLKLP0tXQ/v-deo.htmlsi=tcxF43uEpM1XkgRJ (I was amazed it uploaded OK, but it seems the Rolling Stones allow their music to be uploaded to UA-cam... thanks Mick and Keith :)
Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing
I have tried developing better relative pitch over the years, and while my ear has improved, I still find it very difficult, despite all the exercises, tips and suggestions. But thanks for the lesson; I will persevere.
Keep at it! It is difficult and it takes time but it can be done
@@musicbyclaytones Thanks for the encouragement - I really like the encouragement and optimism you project in your videos, in addition to the informational content.
Great lesson. Thanks. Love the 'Ram' cap (not my fave Macca album, but definitely worth commemorating).
Thanks for the kind words. I love this cap haha. I'm a fan of all things Macca
By thinking you need to explain that the E "shape" played on the 7th fret isn't E highlights the difficulty people have explaining the CAGED method. Have had someone ask me to play E on 7th fret, so of course played E, with root on 5th string. "NO, E!" was the response. "That is E". "NO IT ISNT, that's A!" Of course what he meant was "play B, 7th fret, root on 6th string", but not what he said.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm always looking for better ways to communicate this kind of material. I will keep that in mind!
That’s my guitar teacher!!!! Good content man!
Thanks for watching brother!
I've been digging into your Beast of Burden lesson, and I'm thinking there should be a play like Keith course that would feature the best of Keith. Honky Tonk, Brown Sugar, Can't You Hear Me, Beast of Burden, Tumbling Dice, Shattered would be a start. And bonus, he plays in other tunings. Because if you could play the best of Keith, that's pretty much rock n roll. Then, if you wanted the blues, the best of BB, which you could probably do in a half dozen songs. And then for the jazz chords, the best of Steely Dan. King Charlemagne, Hey Nineteen, Josie, Peg, Dr. Wu, might do it. And if you could do all that, that's pretty much guitar.
Ooh "Best of" sounds like a video series I will have to look into making! Great idea. Especially the Steely Dan stuff as I'm a big fan of the Dan. Thanks for sharing, and watching.
Watching you "crash your car" over chord changes reminded me of how I bashed and flailed on the guitar for 20+ years. I stopped playing 10 years ago in frustration. I've been thinking of trying it again. Videos like this give me hope. Thanks!
I have worked with so many people who have had the same experience! And they were ultimately able to overcome it! It's never too late. You can do it. Good luck. Lot's more to come here. (private lessons available too!)
Always struck me as a very Steve Cropper-ish riff.
I wouldn't be surprised if Keith or Ron or Mick learned some of the Stax records groups! Good ear. Thanks for watching
Awesome lesson..you mademe pick up my guitar..Thanks!
That's what it's all about! Thanks for watching
Bringing up B7 at the beginning is unnecessarily confusing and no B7 does not sound like B
For a rock guitarist knowing a 7th chord is advanced technique.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm always looking for different ways to discuss this stuff. Thanks for watching
@codetech5598 Ha!
I love the way Keith and Ronnie weave their guitars together around these chords. Always one of my fave Stones songs.
Yes! They worked together in such a cool way. Definitely one of my favorite guitar duos in a band together.
This was such a great lesson for me. It’s exactly what I needed. I used it on my Boss looping and drum machine pedal. I created a loop with these C F G C triads and I played it with different voicings (mainly cowboy and bar codes) and arpeggios. Super fun!
Thanks for watching! Glad it was cool and helpful.
really incredible examination I am not able to understand...
Which step are you having trouble with? The 5 steps - pitch matching, singing the scale, recognizing the interval, translating that to the note over the specific chord, and finding that note on the fretboard - all present their own unique challenges. When in doubt, start at the beginning of that process and don't move forward until you are sure you can nail each individual skill. Good luck!
@@musicbyclaytones sorry is a typo, I am now able to understand I am now subscribe to you haha
Haha oh ok cool! Thanks for subscribing!
Turn off your snare!😁
Haha I know I can't believe I missed that when recording! Next time.
Went to the comment section for this! :) Great video though!
@@musicbyclaytones All Good. Great video.
Hi just found your channel and was researching the CAGED system. Ive watched through your 6 part series and Im excited to learn your 3 Pillars. Im sure as I progress the answer to my question will show itself but is there a "D" shape educational video?thanks again just subscribed.
Sorry, my brian must be fried. Obviously the chord is shown. I just got mixed up. Thanks again
Thanks for watching! I hope to add more videos to that playlist over time. At the moment I don’t think I cover the D shape as I find it to be the least useful/common shape of the bunch. But I will one day! I hope you get some value from the videos.
great lesson, if one uses melody notes (singing mentally) what you are teaching is what people say so cool. thanks from japan
Thanks for watching! Glad it was helpful
Hi Claytones, I'm starting to learn how to play the guitar. I'm currently focusing on the major and minor scales using the CAGED system. I would like to move on to playing all the diatonic triad chords for these scales, and I'm also trying to learn the inversions for these triads across the fretboard. However, I'm having some difficulty with this. Would it be possible for you to create a video on these topics?
I will think about making something like that! It sounds like maybe a good place for you to start would be with triads on the top 3 thinnest strings. These shapes should be within the scales you are playing. But it's tough to learn on your own. I'll see what I can do! I do have some other CAGED videos up, but they may not be exactly what you're looking for. Thanks for watching!
@@musicbyclaytones Thank you so much. I'm looking forward to your future videos, even if the concept might be a bit advanced for me at the moment
This is amazing! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Tx , great explanations, never stop learning 😬
Thanks for being here!
Really good lesson. I've already learned and use triads a great deal. But this "voice leading" really helped connect some more dots. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful. I like the idea of thinking about those melody lines that you create with voice leading, rather than the "shapes" themselves.
Andy Summers is in so many ways a master of what you are talking about here...John Frusciante another. Damn there are still Police songs I would love to, but don't dare play live because of the dexterity required and technical consistency it takes in hitting those shapes and changes without effing up.
Yes, they are both masters of this! And it makes their guitar playing so cool, interesting, and unique to them!
I really like your approach...and this a hugely important element to get ones head around. I"m going to recommend to some guys I know who are struggling to understand basic guitar theory. Now I am not saying I am deep in theory....I have played for 40+ years and played in heaps of bar bands playing both rhythm and lead over those years...without a lot of guitar theory. I developed my ear and playing chops by just playing a lot and with other "proper" musicians. Now I am going back and taking on more theory...and your way of explaining things is very easy to absorb. I have to say What enabled/enables me to play at the level I do and with real musicians is that over all that time one thing really important thing I learned was TIMING...I don't know if there is anything more important. Of course I learned over time all the other tools...double stops and how to use them...Sliding, bending, Pull-offs, hammer-ons, Arpeggios, And maybe one the most important skills muting...which has so much to do with timing and feel. I still often play with a metronome or click track over top of a backing track. It's interesting to see people post guitar play alongs/covers and how so much of the timing and feel is just wrong and they cant hear it. I know guys who have more musical knowledge than me but cant stay in time and can't find the feel of piece. I decided long ago to do away with Tabs...I feel like they work against developing your ear. Learning to play by ear is hugely important IMO...and when you apply that with some of the neck knowledge you are teaching that's when doors open. My biggest challenge has always been consistency...to play clean with consistency...and I don't know if some people just have more innate talent in that realm or if it's a technique issue for me...maybe a bit of both. Thanks for your generosity.
Thanks for being a part of what I am doing, and sharing your story! We all have different backgrounds and come to this material from very different paths. But I am glad to be a part of your musical journey. I definitely agree about the timing - rhythm is the most important element
LOL I saw the joke coming from a mile a way 😂😂😂
Really good , had to sub
Thank you!
What guitar is that?
It's an old Hofner Verithin!
on a different take, interesting choice of guitars!! ... loving the Hofner Verithin, early 60s. I have my late dad's that was bought from Selmer in the UK in 1963. Almost the same bar the trem.
Cool! I love this thing. I’ve had it for years and it’s just awesome. Super cool you’re hanging on to that. I’ll have mine forever
@@musicbyclaytones Do you know how it ended up in the US? I understand Hofner had a different model range over there? HNY M
So good man, similar to learning to read music too. Somehow both playing and saying/reading at the same time really solidifies it in your brain.
Totally! Singing, playing, reading the notes - anything extra you can do to try and absorb them more is super helpful.
Ufff...
Great advice, i was in music school for many years but i struggled with exactly what you mentioned. Brain is lazy machine, so i always memorized fret patterns rather than notes. Thanks!
Same story as me! I got away with it for a long time too. Until I realized I was selling myself a bit short in the end. Good luck!
This is seriously good, are you on Spotify?
Thanks! Yes - "Claytones" look for Playin with my Heart. I have a few up, but not this one yet
Nice🧐
Thanks!
