We designed our Tailgate Tuesday series exclusively for the construction industry. We know that OSHA doesn’t always put things in the clearest terms, so we wanted to make it easy to understand for everyone. In this Tailgate-Safety-Topic we talk about the importance of knowing how to calculate fall clearance distance with SRL’s, and why fall protection safety is so important to protect yourself and your workers when working from heights.
We hope this tailgate safety video helps you better understand how to calculate fall clearance distance when using SRL’s. If it did be sure to leave a like, comment to let us know about any other OSHA construction safety videos you would like to see, and subscribe to be notified about our next video to learn some more confined space safety tips!

    What state are yall in. Cause I'm in Virginia and we set up the work zone by the speed of the road. But we make adjustments do to the amount of traffic, speed of the traffic and geographical lay out of the road. Sounds like yall use 85th percental to set up your work zones. Plus we have 5 components of the work zone which are advance warning, transition, buffer, work area and termination area. The travel way being the 6th

    This video is great, but this is a generic way of calculating the distance. But it is always my recommendation to calculate the distance using the specific guidance in the SRL owner’s manual.

    you said the trench box needed to be 18 inches above the trench wall. this is only needed when the box drops down below the wall. then a slope can be created on the sides that would be 18 inches below, and the slope must correspond with the soil type. other than this, the box can actually be level with the top of the trench wall, at least by the OSHA standard.

    Why is the horizontal bench in type b soil at the bottom twice as much than the rest?

    • @XavierGonzalez-h7n
      @XavierGonzalez-h7n Рік тому

      Because the slope of B-type soil (45 degrees) makes the bench 8 feet long. Note that the slope of A-type soil (53 degrees) makes the first bench almost 7 feet long.

      @@XavierGonzalez-h7n I get where you are getting that but i cant find anything to support that other than the picture. It would make since if OSHA would give us that info it almost leaves it up for interpretation.

  • @ericforeman5466

    So I see on type b soil the first horizontal bench at the bottom looks to be doubled. Why is that a 8’ horizontal bench?

    One more possible scenario. If the worker ties off below their D-ring, free fall would apply. That freefall distance would also have to be added into the fall clearance. For example, if they secured their lanyard at platform level, approximately 5 feet below their D-ring, they would be risking a 5-7'ish FFD. Some SRL's don't permit a FFD but if they do, that could significantly increase the clearance that's needed.
