Hackfest is an annual tradition that attempts to reconstruct the previous year's show from memory. It's a part of the band's senior celebrations and all of the students who marched the show get a chance to enjoy it one last time. It usually sounds pretty awful, and that's the fun in it. This is AMAZING! Thank you for posting these synth cam videos! My son is currently in 7th grade and has been asked to fill in for synth in the marching band front ensemble at our local high school for the next 7 weeks (starting next week). He is an extremely skilled pianist, but he has no idea what to expect since he’s only been in concert and jazz band. Your videos are so incredibly helpful to give him an idea of what the setup and this experience might be like. He is SO humbled and honored at this opportunity. Thank you again for posting these videos. They are extremely helpful! What type of camera is used and how is this set up? I love the quality and would love to see if we could set up something similar once he’s more comfortable / has practiced with the band.
Of course! Happy it helped. I have a few other fun and exciting synth videos - take a look at the 4/9/22 video (if you haven't already) for a slightly different look at what synth players sometimes have to do in addition to playing the keyboard. Of course, his experience is going to vary depending on what equipment is being used. This video from 2021 uses hardware synths (basically, the sounds are built into the keyboard and are directly controlled from each keyboard) and in the video from 2022 we use a software called Apple MainStage which essentially allows any keyboard to use a sound processor from a computer, so the computer/laptop controls/changes all of the sounds. It's just a slightly different workflow but all essentially the same experience. As for the camera setup, it was pretty janky and elaborate back then due to equipment limitations, so this is my Lumix GH4 with a wide angle lens and a variety of clamping hardware to get it to connect to the cart. I'd highly recommend any sort of GoPro/action camera for stuff like this! It's compact and can clamp to both synth carts and on headworn straps for a cool POV perspective.
