Positioning your bow arm
Переглядів 6442 роки тому
Minimize lifting your bow arm when moving between strings. Let the tip and frog lead the bow to the string you're going to. If you keep your elbow stable in basically the same position at all times, you'll get much better control over your string crossings, and you wont accidentally use your arm to push the bow into the string.
The figure 8 bowing pattern seen from above
Переглядів 4852 роки тому
Here's a view of the figure 8 pattern of the bow from above. If you follow my tip and frog you can see that I don't pull and push the bow in a straight line but in what I call a figure 8 pattern. Starting from down bow, you can see how the frog goes down and then up again and ends in a high position when you reach the tip.

The two figure eights of bowing
Переглядів 1,9 тис.3 роки тому
In this video I'm describing how to avoid using muscle force to produce sound on a double bass but to instead use the weight of the bow to pull and push the string sideways. By doing this instead of pushing the bow into the string, we can get a rich sound with lots of overtones. #doublebass #doublebassist #doublebassplayer #music #musician #musicstudent #masterclass #musiclesson #doublebasslesson

Left hand agility and smooth shifts for double bass players
Переглядів 1,6 тис.3 роки тому
Getting around the bass effortlessly and efficiently should always be the goal with our practice. We spend too much time with difficulties caused by ourselves when we use our muscles in an inefficient or counterproductive way. We all struggle with tension when we're playing and hopefully this could help you free your body a little. In this video I'll talk about how to free your left hand from t...

Hi!!! Excellent performance of this amazing piece!! Do you have the piano score for this and the Tarantella as well?
@@BAAJ1998 hello! Thank you for your comment. Email me on perbjorkling@gmail.com
Emailed!!!
This is one of my favorites for bass. I've never tried to play it. I just love to listen to it.
Bravo, I was looking for this peace
More graceful than others heard by me playing the solo cello masterpieces on a double bass.
Thank you!
Double bass is be beaautifully played , Thank you
Thank you!
Hello! Can you make videos about double bass Concertos and how to study?
Thank you for your suggestion! That’s a great idea, I’ll try to make something as soon as I can!
@ can i ask your email? I want and advice for an audition.
perbjorkling@gmail.com
Excellent lesson. This is why I love the French bow so much. The hand mechanics with German bow a much different. The arm has no choice but to modulate up/down for each string. Octaves with German bow illustrate this difference. As for etudes that would address this bow technique refinement, check out "storch-hrabe 57 studies vol. 1" etude #9.
Thank you for your comment and for your etude suggestion! Very much appreciated!
I was hanging out wanting to hear the low B ! :-) Tell us more about the figure 8 thing! Why ? Why not?
Hi Steve! I’m explaining it in my video here: ua-cam.com/video/lvlThr4CUqo/v-deo.html
Congratulation!Beautifull!!
Thank you!
Thank you so much! It's very instructive. I really have problems with my shoulder because of the bad grip of the bow.
Thank you! Do you play with a French bow grip? I will try to make a video about the bow grip soon. I’ve got a video called “a free body for bass players” that might help with you shoulder meanwhile.
@ Thank you for your answer, yes I play with the french bow grip. I am going to watch your video.
Bravíssimo!!!
Thank you!
Possibly the best vibrato advice I've ever come across. Thank you for the insight!
Thank you! I’m glad you found this helpful!
Very interesting, I wish you had just played open strings for the demo.
Do you think it would be clearer if it was demonstrated on open strings only?
Yes , over all four strings. The vibrato is not needed.

It's a current struggle of mine! That plus what feels like a sudden change in my left hand shape makes for a sound I don't like. I'm having to step back and slowly visualize what left hand shape and bow position should be.
I’ve got some videos on left hand and fingers as well! Maybe they can help
Thank you so much!
You’re very welcome, please let me know if you have any questions!
thanks per for the tips !
Good luck!
Hi Per, this is wonderful demonstration that I shared with my students! Thanks for making these videos! Also, where is this shot? The bass rack behind you is awesome and I'm curious to learn more about it!
Dear Sam, I’m so glad to hear this from you and that you’re sharing it with your students! I’ve seen you play Bach and it was truly inspiring! I currently work in the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in southwest Finland and this is our bass room. I thought it was a fitting seating for a double bass education video :)
Thanks Per. Will work that into my practice.
I’m glad you found this useful! Good luck, please let me know if you have any questions!
Hey Per. Nice playing. May I ask who made your bow?
Thank you! To be honest, I don’t know. It’s just a Chinese made bow from EBay
Amazing video nicely put together
Thank you Arthur! I’m glad to hear you found my video helpful.
Go Per!
thanks for the advice per !
Adorable sonata de J.M. Sperger, el máximo exponente del contrabajo, en una grandiosa interpretación de Per Björkling. Me agradaría que pudiera grabar en CD toda la obra de este compositor. ¡Gracias por permitir escucharla!!
Thank you Rafael for your kind words!
nice play per ! and good singer too. do you have pdf file for this pieces ?
Thank you Arya! Unfortunately I don’t have the parts.
@ 😇😇
Magnífico, considero as obras de Bottesine para soprano e baixo um verdadeiro desafio em função dos timbres e volumes, esta: está majestosamente equilibrada e bela. Parabéns !!!
Thank you for your comment!
Como se tivesse fundido o romantismo francês com o futurismo russo. Genial, imersivo, ambíguo, uma perfeita mistura de frio e calor. Gostei muito!!!
Thank you I'm glad to hear you liked the piece!
Fantastic Per!
Many thanks!
Congrats!! Nice performance. Very neat sound
Thank you!
Excellent performance! would you be kind enough to pass me the parts of the work "Tutto che il mondo serra"? Thanks a lot. Faku_kno@hotmail.com
Great playing by all - thank you!
Hi Greg! Sorry for not responding, I just noticed your comment. Thank you and hope you're well!
capriccio 1 P. besides that you are great players.
Thank you!
Very nice execution. I'm looking for the whole op.32 Piano score in orchestral tuning. So besides the Intermezzo do you have also the piano scores of Prelude and Scherzo in orchestral tuning? Thanks!!!!
Where did you find the piano part in orchestral tuning? I am having a hard time finding it!
Patricia Weitzel www.ficksmusic.com/collections/double-bass/products/bottesini-capriccio-di-bravura-mctier McTier published both solo and orchestra tuning.
wonderful, congratulations my friend.
Rodrigo Romero thank you so much!
Super Aufnahme! Welche Saiten spielst Du? Danke und LG Ernő
Ernő Ràcz sorry my German is my good, but I believe I was using Corelli tungsten at the time. The G-string was a heavy tension. Thank you for appreciating my video!
bravo per
Cool to find you here! Looks and sounds great... How fun that you got to play it with an orchestra!
yeah!! :)
nice man !!! can i get the piano score ? hehe thx
hi! e-mail me on per_bjorkling@me.com and I can give you the score. Per
Okeee i will
Really nice playing! Is there any chance that you can share the concertino particellas for the orchestra? I'm playing this in my country and I can't get the material. Thanks in advance! Greetings from Argentina.
dear Pedro, send me an email on per_bjorkling@me.com and I'll give you the parts
Wow! Fantastic!
Bravo! But originally it was in D major( Viennese tuning)
+ALESSANDRO MAMBRINI Originally it was written for violin, not viennese violone.
+Michał Bylina originally it was for violone, sperger was a double bassist cmposer
miguelj296 You're not right this time. This particular sonata is a transcription made by R. Malarić from Sperger's sonatas for violin. Yes, the other sonatas for double bass were for viennese violone.
+Michał Bylina do you have a trusted source that you got the info
+miguelj296 There is no manuscript including violone for this piece. But all of the movements do exist in Sperger's various sonatas for violin. The sonata for double bass is a compilation from violin. Malarić did the same with so-called Dittersdorf Sonata for double bass and piano.
nice!! :D (y)
Yeah Per!! Grymt!
