August 16, 1976 - Cliff Richard becomes one of the first Western artists ever to perform in the Soviet Union when he gives a concert in Leningrad.When Brezhnev was alive, he visited Moscow and Leningrad for a tour performance. According to his own testimony, he experienced considerable culture shock as “clichés that only appeared in spy movies happened in real life.” Soviet officials were so obsessed with security that they always chained up the band's equipment, and a Soviet citizen they met by chance said, "Be careful, there must be a listening device hidden in your room." Hundreds of citizens who could not get tickets were loitering outside the concert hall, and the first ten rows of the concert hall were reportedly occupied by gentlemen in suits and local Communist Party officials. However, Cliff remembers the performance itself positively, saying it was an interesting experience.
