    Looking back it is easy to say what you would have done, but being there and not expecting it, things would be different. Poor people were probably affected the most, and those who never expected anything out of the ordinary. And a lot of keeping warm goes back to having insulation. Not all homes had it even up to the 1960s when code mandated all home have it. During the 1880s if you had money and understood such things, you might have use animal hair as insulation, another material, but nothing like we have today.

    My story is much the same except I lived that life stage in the late '60s so by the '80s I was the parent. Life, as a whole, really was so much better then. While times were hard in some ways, it was so much easier to overcome problems with just common sense and hard work than it is today in this electronic age. I miss the old country store two miles down the dirt road from where I grew up, not big by todays standards, but if they didn't have it you really didn't need it. I miss reading a book in the warm corner behind the woodstove. I miss things being reasonably priced! Thinking back reminded me of a funny story: When my grandson was young, he asked me one day, "When did the world turn colored?" When I asked what he meant, he explained that he had seen black and white photos of the "old days" and old movies and TV shows, so until some point the world must have been B&W....

    • @amazinghistory-r5b
      @amazinghistory-r5b 3 дні тому

      Nice story! I believe everything felt far more personal. You knew the store clerk or the auto-mechanic by first name. When you went anywhere, you would run into someone you knew. Today everyone seems engrossed in their phones. Maybe we'll get back to real people again.

    I wish they had video's like this in our schools for children to learn because unless you "see it" or experience it, you are left unprepared. I live in Central Ohio and remember well the Blizzard of 78 and it can and will happen again but if this isn't taught and video's are much easier to teach than books, no one will know how to be prepared.. look at what happens every time a snow storm is predicted they grab milk and bread, some people don't even have snow shovels, no way to heat their homes if the power goes out. I'm questioning what they call progress. Seems like things were much better then. I'm hopeful all of this will fade away like a bad fad.

      Everything seemed so much simpler and peaceful. Maybe those times will come again.
