In my latest video I share my process for fitting my SFD pants! The basic pattern provided the right circumference for my measurements, evenly distributed between the front and back. By identifying where to add or reduce ease, I achieved a truly personalized fit. I hope this helps you with your fitting. Determine where you need to give more or take away ease to achieve the perfect fit for yourself.

Back to blueprint basics - Avoid these mistakes when drawing your pattern
A wonderful detailed video. I was most interested in your methods to determine armhole depth and body widths from armhole creases (as well as how much ease you suggest for front and back bodices). Thank you -- a great help for anyone drafting patterns and wanting to achieve a good fit!
A well presented topic! Have been learning to draft sewing patterns and do have a forward shoulders too. So while my main bodice patterns reflect the change through my measurements (mainly for the shoulder slope) I didn't know how to adjust the sleeve pattern to fit properly. Thank you for sharing this - your explanations really make it easy to understand the reasons behind your alterations.
This was like a Master Class for me! Thank you! What kind of knit was this? Looks like a Ponte? Can you share the weight?
Thank you for watching. The fabric is from my stash, so I am not sure what the fabric content is. It has a more textured feel than Ponte, but with the same stretch and drape as a Ponte
Also wondering how you managed to sew with such thick difficult fabric? Please share your hints and tricks! I think the idea of even trying to cut out of thick knits would make me feel - how do you pin the pattern on/ stop stretching out of shape when you’ve cut it? So many questions- apologies!
Hello Elsabe, what an inspiring video - would like to see what your finished garment looks like on !
I've learned so much with this one video. Thanks!
Thank you for all the great tips
Does the center notch stay the the sleeve? I don’t think you addressed it?
Thank you so very much for sharing your expertise, just come back to sewing after a long time and making palazzo pants will definitely use this technique now I have seen it in action no more bulk or rolling elastic, really appreciate you taking the time to share now this afternoon’s task is to finish those pants using your method 💐
Always learning something new with your great tutorials! Thanks Elsabe!
This is terrific. Thank you. I've been using the cutout technique for sewing in the round for a long time, but never before seen your method of finishing the neckline. I can't wait to try it.
Hi Elsabe, I have only recently found your videos since joining Surefit Designs. Although I’ve sewn for years I’m new to overlocking. I have just purchased the same machine secondhand and cannot wait to learn how to properly use it. Thank you so much for these wonderful videos. ❤ 0
@@catherine9708 thank you for watching and taking the time to leave me a comment. I use my overlocker all the time and will be lost with out it
❤❤
Thank you Elsabe. Towards the end of the video, you mentioned that you shortened the front crotch length by 1cm. Did I understand correctly that you pinned out a wedge from center front seam just below the tummy and decreasing to nothing at the side seam hip area, but then you made the adjustment by taking off the 1cm at the top of the waist area for expediency? For the final pattern, would you do the pattern adjustment just below the tummy area or at the waist level? The net measurements would be the same either way, but would the fit be any different between the two adjustments?
Cardigan is really nice. Will definitely give this a try. I also like your black and green outfit you are wearing. Absolutely beautiful. Elsabe, Can I please ask if you have a pattern available for them ? ❤
@catherine9708 this is one of my favourite summer cardigans. It is the Rachel twin set from Angela Wolf patterns
@@ElsabeHurn Thank you so much Elsabe. ❤️

I definitely will be looking for these books. Thank you Elsabe for sharing. ❤
Absolutely loved this video Elsabe. Thank you very much for sharing some of your books. I love books myself. ❤
The best tutorial I've seen on the topic. Thank you. ❤
Wow, thank you!
Elsabe, you are so kind to teach us all the devilish details of pant drafting with the image flaws that we all have. You have given complete instructions here, very grateful.
Thank you so much!
Thank you Elsabe ❤ how do you manage for the quite different curvature of your pants (front & back) in the hip area? Isn't it difficult to mach in sewing? Did you verify that the side seamlines have the same length for front and back?
I had no problem with the curved seams. As you saw on my photo my pants seam was smooth. I always measure my inseam measurement when drawing my pattern and when I true my pattern I check my side seam. I think if I had more of an extreme curve it would change the length, but in this case I had no issues with the side seams.
I cannot thank you enough Elsabe. Very Informative & clear instructions. I am now going to pull out my pants pattern & go for it. The side on photos were a great inspiration. Please come to Australia ❤❤❤
Thank you for watching. Please contact Martha if you have any issues with the fit. She is amazing with fitting pants.
Great informations and the steps make so much sense now. Love your final pants...cant wait to see what you will do with them! Thank you so much for taking the time For this video❤👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much!
Very informative and some food for thought. Thank you.
Thanks for watching
Thank you very much. This is very enlightening. I do have one question: With the redistributed ease, isn't the side seam of the back panel a tad longer in the hip area than the side seam of the front panel? It looks that way on the video around 29.05 and following where you show the two pattern pieces stacked on top of each other. So how do you sew it together, ease the back portion? Thank you.
When I pinned it together it matched without having to ease it in. I actually got a smooth seam.
Thank you so much Elsabe this was awesome!
Thank you! Really enjoyed this video.
WOW this is awesome, makes sense for our "perfect" bodies, thank you Elsabe
I saw this finish on an insanely expensive skirt and really wanted to mimic it but couldn't find any patterns that did it. This is just an incredibly elegant and sensible way to finish a waist. Thank you so much!
Thank you for watching
An amazing video, just what I needed, however, would I be right in thinking I could use one of the double zigzag type stitches on my sewing machine as I don't have an overlocker?
@@audreymottishaw2180 a zig zag stitch will definitely work
As always Elsabe a great instructional video. Very clear and easy to understand. I have now included these additional items into my measurement list.
Glad it was helpful!
Very interesting Elsabe! Just a question about the different shapes your side seams have at the low hip area, ie the back was curvier than the front, doesn't that mean the back side seam is longer than the front side seam? Did you need to ease in the back pattern to the front, or did you hand that in some other way? thanks so much :-)
Carmen, is that you from Fitting Essentials and Inhouse Pattern? Claudia here. I have the same question, see above.
Thank you for the great explanation and tutorial for the pants. Makes so much sense now. I shall have another try.😅
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for this Elisabe. I will give my sure fit pant pattern another try
Please do!
Thank you so much, Elsabe. It help a lot

Great video Elsabe. I have drafted my pants and will now follow your instructions to complete them to fit properly (after making a pair of jeans that dont quite fit right). Very informative. Keep up the good work.
Thanks a mill Elsabe. Your video is very helpful 😊
You're welcome 😊
Thanks so much for sharing ! It really makes a difference!
Thank you so much Elsabe for sharing this, my shape pretty much and now I know why pants have caused me so much grief.
Thank you for watching.
Absolutely brilliant! They look fabulous. I’m still working on my blueprint. I will definitely use this video for reference. 👏👏👏
Thanks for watching. The pattern as is gives me the right circumference but divides it equally between front and back pattern. I think that establishing where I needed to give ease and where to take away ease really made the difference.
@@ElsabeHurn. Totally made sense. They looked perfect on you!
Thank you for showing us this information. This is quite helpful and interesting. My Surefit pants pattern gives me the best fit of any pattern I’ve ever used from waist to crotch. Legs are a bit wide but easy to taper in. I’m in process of sewing the boot strap pants form so I can fit my pants easier plus see what looks better on me.
I hope your pants form is a success. Share it on the SFD Facebook group once you are done.
Thank you, Elsabe, for sharing your fitting knowledge with those of us trying to find success in fitting the garments we sew. I am motivated to take out my pants kit and try again.

Elsabe, What stitch would you recommend I use on this fabric using a sewing machine?
@@jasmingutherless5301 I worked straight stitch with Gutterman Maraflex which is specifically for stretch fabrics. This thread is used in bobbin and top and allows the seam to stretch. I sew my straight stitch and then another row of straight stitch 6mm in the seam allowance and then trim away excess seam allowance. It gives a lovely finish.
Thank you for this tip! Sounds like I could even use power mesh with this skill. Do you have tips for woven fabric to cascade on the body as well without it being box to prevent roll bunching?
