TA in CONTROL

Приєднався 22 лис 2020
In here I’ll give you all the answers to your TA questions! And when I say TA, I also mean LSA, 1:1, CA, HLTA or whatever they call you in YOUR school!
I was a TA/HLTA/1:1TA for 20 years. I became a TA with almost no qualifications and worked my way through NVQs and achieved a first class (hons) degree, all while I worked in school. I EVEN tried teacher training (for 6 weeks) but I hated it!
For most of the 20 years, I LOVED my job but there were definitely times when I walked into school feeling a total lack of confidence.
And there were times when I wanted to improve my practice but I didn't want to attend yet another training session! I just wanted something I could work on in the background and in my own time, but there was nothing.
And that is why I have created TA IN CONTROL - to provide you with all the answers you need to do your job well!
If that sounds interesting to you, then subscribe to this channel and watch my videos. Thank you!

How does this differ from dealing with kids without PDA?
Great question! In an ideal world, the strategies I outline-like using positive language, offering choices, and being flexible-should be used for all students, as they promote engagement and reduce anxiety. However, in many schools, TAs often face time pressures, high workloads, and the demands of supporting multiple students, so these approaches may not always be applied universally. I've focused on children with PDA in this instance because these strategies aren’t just helpful-they’re essential. Their anxiety around demands means traditional methods can increase resistance, so framing tasks in ways that provide autonomy and reduce pressure is key to helping them engage. My videos are aimed at less experienced TAs who might not have had time to explore these approaches yet and it’s why I provide an accompanying pdf that expands on the information given in the video. I hope this helps clarify the difference between strategies and where I’m coming from. 😊
Is language is a main issue for getting rejection?
Language can sometimes be a factor, especially if the role requires strong communication skills for working with students, teachers, and parents. However, it’s important to remember that many schools value bilingual or multilingual TAs, especially when working with students who have English as an Additional Language (EAL). If you’re concerned about language being a barrier, here are some tips to strengthen your application and interview performance: Showcase Your Strengths: Highlight any skills or experience you bring, such as working with children, managing classrooms, or supporting learning. Emphasise how being multilingual could benefit the school, such as helping EAL students feel more comfortable. Work on Confidence: If English isn’t your first language, focus on improving your confidence in speaking and writing. Practice common interview questions and answers with a friend or mentor, or record yourself to refine your responses. Demonstrate Your Commitment to Learning: Schools value candidates who are willing to learn and improve. If you’re actively working on your language skills, mention this during your interview-it shows dedication and determination. Ask for Feedback: If you’ve faced rejection, don’t hesitate to ask the school for feedback. They may provide helpful insights to improve for your next application. Remember, language skills can improve over time, and schools often appreciate enthusiasm, experience, and your ability to connect with students. Keep applying, and don’t let this hold you back-you’ve got a lot to offer! Good luck, and feel free to reach out if you have more questions. I helped one of the children in primary school. She broke her leg and she was my neighbour . I asked the headteacher permission if I could drive her with her mum with me to school after I drive my child to his school. At that time was OK and that was around the year 2017. Do you think is good to put it in my application?
The situation you describe is definitely an exception and I have done something similar. My neighbour had broken her leg and her children went to the school I worked at, so my neighbour spoke to the headteacher and it was arranged for me to drive the children to and from school - all open and above board! So, what you did was absolutely fine! In answer to your question, it's not that I think you shouldn't put it on your application form, it's more that I don't think it's needed on there. Hope this helps! Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with! ❤

Thank you, this is useful.
This was fascinating. I am a retired teacher having taught between 1982 and 2017. I have had a few experiences of bullying, which all ended up differently to yours and I think it may come down to position, gender and unions. I keep starting this comment from scratch because I'm going into too much detail and it's too long. So I'll cut it down to the unions. I worked in a successful high school in the north of England and at one point we had a head teacher who was a dreadful bully. He never bullied me or my department because we had extremely successful exam results. We were also a team who got on really well, were mostly quite confident and extrovert and put him in his place frequently. However, I was always aware that we were as safe as our last set of GCSE results. However, his bullying across the school was legend. What put an end to it was having fantastic union reps not only in school but more importantly at the local level. The teachers across the different unions co-operated, we all carefully recorded every single occasion of bullying, we took union action including a ballot for strike action and eventually the head was instructed to follow a strict guideline of behaviour written for him or be dismissed. He tried hard and improved greatly but thank goodness he left after a year anyway. The second experience involves my daughter. She trained to be a primary school teacher. In her first school the head was inadequate but nice and she got on well. In her second school the head teacher was vile. A dreadful bully. My daughter and one of her colleagues went off sick. She took her case to the local union who were amazing. But again it was down to having a great local rep who knew the head and was not afraid of her. My daughter was released from her contract and got a glowing reference. We heard that the head was under threat of the union taking legal action against her and they had warned her about misusing references for 'revenge'. Happily my daughter did some supply work and the head in that school was so pleased with her they offered her a permanent job and she went on to have a really successful career. But it took years to regain the confidence that the bully had managed to destroy in a matter of weeks. So in your own case you should never have been in a position where you felt you had to fight it alone. You cannot really be expected to as a lone TA against a member of the SLT. But I was not surprised about the head's vociferous reaction. She must have been terrified at that moment because any successful action against the deputy for bullying would involve her being reprimanded for either not being aware of it or being aware and not tackling it.
Yes I have been on one of the schools I support from a TA in the same class I was.
@@silvanaabdelalahad877 Sorry to hear that. It’s horrid isn’t it! Are you in a different school now and in a happier situation? ❤️

Hi Mam I am a regular viewer of your videos and I developed an interest for doing this course. But when I got to know more I realised that you need literacy maths and computer knowledge for doing the course. I am very poor in all the three. Can you please honestly say if I could do the course with very little knowledge in these. I tried doing some sample literacy and numeracy tests and failed to complete any of it . Please don't hesitate to say the truth as it would be really helpful for me
Thank you so much for watching my videos and for reaching out! I can tell you’re carefully considering this decision, and I appreciate your honesty about your concerns. Let’s break this down step by step to help you get a realistic idea of what’s needed for a TA role and how you might approach it. 1. Qualifications for TAs Can Vary by Country If you’re in the UK, many schools are open to hiring TAs without formal qualifications in literacy and numeracy, as long as you’re willing to learn on the job. Some schools even offer support with these skills once you’re employed. In the USA or other countries, requirements can vary widely by state or region. Some may require certain qualifications, while others might be more flexible, especially for entry-level or supporting roles. It could be helpful to reach out to local schools or education boards to clarify what’s expected in your area. 2. Sample Tests and Learning Levels It sounds like the sample tests may have been at a higher level than expected for the initial stages of a TA course, especially if you’re just starting out. Keep in mind that many people feel unsure at first, especially with formal literacy and numeracy tests. From your written comment, your English seems strong, so you may just need a bit of practice with specific test formats or with questions designed to test core skills. 3. Consider High Schools vs. Primary Schools You may find that applying to secondary (high) schools is a better fit, as these roles sometimes put less emphasis on a TA’s literacy and numeracy skills, focusing more on supporting students in specific subjects or general classroom support. It could be a great option if you’re worried about the literacy or numeracy aspects, as secondary schools often value other skills more heavily. 4. Focus on What You Can Do Remember, your life experience and any other work skills are valuable! Schools often look for TAs with good interpersonal skills, patience, and adaptability. Think about the skills you’ve developed in other jobs or from life experiences-these can be highly transferable to a TA role. For example, skills like communication, teamwork, and managing responsibilities are all qualities that schools appreciate. 5. Consider Taking Small Steps to Boost Your Confidence If you’re truly worried about literacy, numeracy, or computer skills, you might consider doing a short, free course online. Websites like BBC Bitesize (UK) or Khan Academy offer free resources for brushing up on basics, and this could boost your confidence if you decide to go for a TA role. If you have any spare hours in the week, you could also reach out to local schools to see if they offer any volunteer opportunities. This can be a great way to get experience and increase your chances of becoming a TA. Starting as a TA doesn’t mean you need to be an expert in everything-it’s more about your willingness to support students and work as part of a team. From your thoughtful comment, it’s clear you have a strong interest in the role, which counts for a lot. Thanks again for reaching out, and best of luck! Please keep me updated on your journey-I’m rooting for you! And if you're not a member already, come and join my Facebook group 'TA IN CONTROL FREE GROUP' It would be great to see you in there! 💗
Dear Mam I am so happy to see your detailed reply. Also I am thankful for your advice and really appreciate the effort you have put for this comment. I am in Australia and here there are certificate courses for teacher's aide jobs which I could only start after successfully completing their literacy and numeracy assessment. So that was my concern. I am ready to work and have a love to work with kids as you said and also ready to learn anything if given a training or so. Also I have joined the volunteering group of a local school here but have never received any calls so far. Anyway your tips and advice have now given me some confidence to work for this. Maybe at least if not soon I can spend more time on this and can join the course later too after improving my skills. Love your videos dear Mam and you are a real inspiration for me. I am going to work for it. Anyway I can give a try . Once again thanks a lot for spending your valuable time. Will keep you updated.

Hi there hope you’re well my wife and I have moved to London and she has been a TA for nearly 8 years mainly primary level she is qualified level 3 but has been given a Lvl paid role. She was told she would be in class with class teacher but on the day of pupils first day she was told by her manager/SEndco that she has to work 1:1 in another class with brief description that the child has Autism. She was given very little knowledge of the child’s profile also the class teacher has zero involvement with the child. My has found that the child has serve case of autism he kicks spits and also like to do a runner. My wife has never experienced this out her years, she is having a real hard time with the child and had a panic attack breakdown on her second day in the new school. My wife has anxiety and currently receiving therapy also she is very anxious which she made aware during interview. Her line manager said to her in a patronising way “so are you telling me you can’t handle him”. My wife had found out via other teachers and TA that there was similar situation with previous ta and this child. Also her class teacher doesn’t give any support and once again is patronising. Soo sorry for the long essay I just need her to find the right support as she isn’t doing too well her self with this as she is very overwhelmed. Any advice. Many thanks 🙏🏽

Thanks Lauren. I have saved this video. A colleague kindly ordered copies of your Smashing Interventions book for a few of us and it has made me feel much clearer and in control. Also, as you pointed out, it is invaluable as a resource for answering SLT questions about progress, etc 😊
