I'll tell you my story, in learning English. I grew up French speaking. Later on, teenager, I used a book, "Assimil", used by my family, to learn English. I didn't know it was for British English. I thought that English was English, and that was all. The book explained how to say each word, which I did, in my mind. How did I get a British accent, then? Amazing, to me.
