THE CLINICAL EMBALMING EXPERIENCE
GIVING YOU THE TOOLS TO SUCCEED
PIMS offers one of the most thorough and comprehensive clinical laboratory experiences in the country in our state of the art Care Center, which was newly redesigned in 2024.
All PIMS students, under the supervision of a licensed instructor, are required to complete a minimum of twenty embalming cases as part of the clinical experience. On campus, we are trusted with more than 500 decedents a year. Each team of three to five students will perform the embalming care for 20 of these decedents, exceeding the American Board of Funeral Service Education standard. Our newly renovated on-campus care center is a four station embalming and preparation facility featuring multiple brands and types of equipment and chemicals so students can learn and define what works best for their future career!
CERTIFIED TRAINING & RESUME BUILDING WORK
On Campus, we complete over 600 embalming cases a year, allowing our students tp gain extensive knowledge of the process with real hands-on work.
Each of our student teams of three to five students completes their 20 cases within our four-station embalming facility.
Online students have the option of completing their 20 clinical embalming requirements with a funeral home they are affiliated with near their home or, if close by, may join one of our campus teams and follow their rotation schedule.
WHAT'S THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE LIKE?
This unique clinical experience involves fully participating in actual human embalming cases.
This is not an observational task. For campus students this will be completed on campus. For distance education students this can be completed at a nearby funeral home where the student lives or on campus with one of our campus teams. All clinical embalming cases are performed under the direct supervision of licensed PIMS instructors on campus or licensed embalmers for distance education.
HERE IS WHAT ELSE YOU CAN EXPECT:
21 INDIVIDUAL EMBALMING CASES
The clinical experience will include at least 21 individual embalming cases (20 as the program previously states and one on Campus as an evaluative tool for successful completion)
PROGRESS TRACKING & MENTORSHIP
Case by case evaluations will be based on the student meeting a series of tasks and objectives set forth in the Master Reference.
The student must keep a record of their progress which must be confirmed after each case by their preceptor. Mentors in the field are strongly encouraged to offer qualitative feedback in the student report to the Institute.
EVALUATION
An overall evaluation progress report is completed by the Embalming Proctor.
FINAL ASSESSMENT
The Final Assessment is PASS/FAIL and will be determined after 20 cases have been completed for this program. This final case (#21 or more), termed the CLEAN-UP, must be performed at the Pittsburgh campus under the observation of a ABFSE qualified PIMS licensed embalmer.
A COUPLE IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE →
The Clinical Embalming is NOT the same as the Funeral Practicum experiential learning component however, in the case of Distance Learning Students the Clinical Embalming may be performed at the same location as their Practicum (campus students perform their clinical embalming on campus).
A valid PA Funeral Trainee License is required to perform any Campus based clinical embalming cases. This is required for ALL PIMS students, campus or distance education.

Congratulations! I looked forward to graduation so much but covid took mine away and I graduated over zoom.
Good job well done team . I'm Joseph Septimus working in the red cross in sierraleone west africa and i've serve in dignified burials of deceased victims of disasters here and i'm currently thinking of working permanently in the funeral service industry. I've been working on other services in the red cross eg WASH, CEA, FirstAid , etc. But i just want to serve my time in the funeral industry as a burning desire in honour and dignity dayin-dayout as my objectives.

Beautiful and modern facility.
Even for EMS providers, challenges on removal of the loved one or Patient. I am an EMT and I deal with the DOAs lots of times, and cannot touch loved one until cleared by coroner or funeral home.

At the end of each exercise, we give students constructive criticisms on those kinds of things to help get them comfortable with communicating with families. Please keep in mind, for some of them this was their first time taking a death call with very little experience. It is a learning experience for that very reason. I’m just now getting around to catching up with the PIMS UA-cam channel. It’s great to see the real world situations that a funeral director will face. Our journey with a family begins with that first call. Communication is the key. Kudos to the staff and instructors for really putting the students into an environment where they can learn and grow!
