Hub replacement on an OMC electric shift pin drive propeller
Have you been boating enough on Big Momma this summer? I got my "Big Momma" which is a little smaller than yours (we call her "Stevie Ray Vaughan", but same motor and outdrive I think (Ford 302, Omc electric shift 1975 Sea Ray SRV175) in the water a month ago, and we have been boating a lot this summer. I also fixed my friends 13' Boston Whaler with a 45 hp jonson, and have other outboards and little boats 12', 14' too - so this summer was boating! Very hot and smoky from fires where we live in McCall, Idaho.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, we've been boating on Big Mamma this year. I can't say a lot as it is always too little for me :) But we had few nice journeys on Curonian Lagoon. One of them just on the last weekend. We went on Nemunas river once (I made a video on that. With drone shots) and most of our weekends are on Kaunas rezervoir. Yes, this summer was a hot one. I'm glad you finally launched your Stevie after the impeller replacement. I had an adventure with snapped alternator/water pump belt. Had my 5hp Suzuki ready for such events. And it worked at 1/2 throttle only... It was OK downwind, but the second half of the rote was upwind... So had to ask a nice guy for a tow... A float of shame behind the other boat :)
@@Dasiukas Nice. I've been towed a few times too, and it is wonderful when someone helps you in your time of need. I need to fit either a small outboard like your Suzuki or a bigger trolling motor to the 2nd swim ladder for such occasions. I have the motors, but just need to make a little wood mount that bolts to the right swim ladder.
I put the date on mine too, because they say 8 years. But, I usually get 1.5 to 2.5 years max. Especially if they are inside an enclosure. But, it shouldn't matter much, as they don't kick off too much heat anyway. One day I'm going to open it up, and see what is really burning out, as I don't think it is the led, but rather a cheap transformer or chip. Maybe we could just buy a bag of chips for 8 dollars, and solder a new one in?
When they say 8 years they assume the bulb to be on for several hours per day. On that new Osram bulb package was a note 2.7 h/day or 15000 hours. My outdoors lamp is on for a whole night operated by light sensor. So about 4400 hour/year. Maybe the bulbs could last longer if I bought better ones. But I usually use cheap ones. So that's the result (2.5 years). I wont bother with the repair... I too think it is not the LED that failed.
What fuel do you run on the OMC 235?
@@juanquintero9642 Usually I fill it up with 95 octane petrol ( European standard) but most of it is E7 or even E10. That means it contains 7% or 10% of ethanol witch is undesirable for this old engine. So somtimes I use E0 98 octane without ethanol if I can find and if it is not super pricy.
Awesome! Looks pretty hard. I grew up surfing every day, skating, and skiing/snowboarding. I'm a little wobbly now, at 60 years old. But, you guys look like kids having fun! I've been boating almost every day this summer, one sort or another, as it has been a hot smokey (forest fires everywhere - real dry and hot in the western usa). Most everyone here has those expensive wake surf boats, with water ballasts, and kind of ruin the lake for everyone else. But, I did see someone on a hydrofoil yesterday behind a wake surf boat - maybe I'll give it a try? Looks like you could get away with a pretty small boat (my friend has a 13' boston whaler, with a 45 hp jonson 2 stroke that I think would work great). Thanks for the video!
Thank you for a comment. Hydrofoil needs very little force to be pulled. So yes, even a very small boat will work. There are hydrofoils of different size of course and we tried smaller for the first time (previous video. Check it too). And it was much more difficult to learn. This time (second time) we tried a bigger one (both the board and the foil are bigger). It works on lower speed and you have more time to react. I'm bigger and heavier than my friend, so it is much harder for me to stand up though. I tried foiling on my knees but with no big success.
Thank you for the praise. We're getting a bit fed up with the simple wake board so we're trying new toys!
Thank you!

What a shame after a good job refitting the perished old bellows!
@@robanfield1 You are completely right. The bellow was half alive though 😀. And it is still the same 2 1/2 years later… Quite impressive stubbornness!
Question. How do you fill the gear oil? You removed the very top (oil) plug and the very bottom… do I remove the second plug from the bottom and fill from the oil hole until it comes out that second hole from the bottom? Please let me know, thanks
Thanks for watching. I filled through the very top hole (as I had no oil pump) and that is not so very correct way to fill oil. Usually you fill through the bottom drain hole using an oil pump untill the oil starts flowing from the upper (very top) hole. Then you plug the upper hole and after that disconnect your oil pump and close the bottom hole with the plug also.
Always pour acid to the water, and not water in acid.
Thanks for your notice. Just this acid is not very strong nor dangerous. It’s like lemon acid… So it works this way too. No big differece
@@Dasiukas Correct, it´s a medium strong acid. But it¨s still a very bad practice to pour water to acid, because it makes room for mistakes. And you will risk getting it in your face due to exotherm process when doing like this with another acids or bases . So to keep it safe and follow the correct procedure 🙂

Great video and it is very helpful. While disassembling the water pump, I paid no attention and I now have no idea in what direction the arms of the impeller should point!? Can you help me out please? Thank you.
Thank you! Usually vertical shaft turns clock vice (when looking from the top). So impeller arms gets to their place while correctly rotating the shaft with impeller and pushing pump housing down on it. Good luck with the repair!

What a beautiful boat! You sure give her the love! Can't wait for a nice trip on the lake video! My old boat and outdrive are very similar. (1975 Searay with 190 hp and omc stringer electric shift). I put a new impeller and water pump in today! It started just like yours - after 2 years sitting - but mine sat all last summer because I didn't have time to fix the impeller, and had other boats to mess with. Thanks for all the videos! You inspire me, and live in such a beautiful country.

Hi, John. It’s just half past midnight here but I’ll check the part number for you tomorrow. I just googled for it and went through all possible places they could offer the part. Chose the best price…
@Dasiukas thank you so much. I've been looking for the litter pin same one you lost been hours looking from can't understand how it can be lost it fell to the floor in front of. It's mad. Be most thank for your help. Goodnight look forward to hearing from you.
@@johnwilliams7269 So... Housing with bearing and with seal (mine was without o-ring). This complete part No. is 56110-98502-02M. I was lucky to find it for $28.60 but the total price with shipping and all the fees was about $53. That small part lost by me and by you too is (as specified in the catalog Fig 17, ref. No. 16) a PIN, push. It has a part No. 57632-98500. It is the simplest part in the whole outboard 😀. I had already made that part completely from scratch, but then I found it inside the gear case. It is not very precise. Just use a part of a drill bit of the corresponding diameter. Cut off a piece from the shank the same length as diameter. Make sure that cut off end is clean and perpendicular (you can put it in to the drill and sand the end while spinning). The spring will compensate an inaccuracy. If you give me your email, I could send you the part catalogue. But I just searched a little and found it here: www.brownspoint.com/pdf/DT5(83).pdf That one is for 1983 model. And for the other year models check this: www.brownspoint.com/t-bpmodel.aspx?modelId=29 Good luck with your repair! Have a nice time on the water!

Beautiful! Great video! Winter is late here, but coming today. Hopefully we'll get a couple feet of snow on top of the 6" we have. The lakes finally froze though. Stay warm, and happy holidays!
Thank you! We came here for nice winter views. Used to come here by boat in summer times.
It's winter and snowy out here. Watching this video makes me want to get out in the garage and get to work on my Force 50. I had a Suzuki 8hp for my kicker on my Canaventure. Great little motor. The pickup boxes for deliveries are something we don't have here. Cool idea.
Thanks for a comment. It’s winter with snow here too. Just that footage is from last spring :) Post machines are the great invention! We have may be 4 companies of this service competing here.
I love that when the gasket slipped, you said "ship" heh heh can swear in english! Funny the things I take for granted in Idaho. Can get those plastic gaskets for the oil change in a day, the pump to put in from the bottom bolt at the local auto, and the seals (with stainless springs) in a few days. You have Amazon? Does shipping take a long time, or is it expensive? But, it is wonderful watching you improvise, on something I kind of take for granted. Now, I never thought a little 5hp would push your big boat. And, I have several small outboards (3, 5, 8, 9.9 15 hp). And, I've had problems on the lake several times, and had to have a nice stranger tow me back to a dock. So, maybe I'll throw a 5hp somewhere in the boat, and put it on if times get tough. I don't have a mount though, and would have to rig something on one of the ladders.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, those propane bottle gaskets are of good material but too big. I could get proper gaskets here locally from an on line store. But you know... You are working on something and don't want to wait for a few days to get a "shippy" part worth a few cents. Amazon is a world wide but I use it rarely as shipping takes too long (depends of where to ship from of course). If to ship from USA it takes from about 2 weeks to 2 months (that's not by Amazon but generally speaking). It is difficult to find American parts here. But... even though Suzuki is made in Japan, buying a bearing from the US was the cheapest. About a small outboard on my big boat. It could be too small in tough conditions. But generally it push my boat at a speed like you paddle a dinghy. Wow! You've got a bunch of outboards! And yes, you can get help from a nice stranger if you are not alone in that part of a lake. And yes, now are the times of civilization. You can just use your mobile phone and call for help. That small Suzuki backup outboard haven't been started since that maintenance time (for 1.5 year already). May be I should check it if it still runs in spring. I know that my English is not perfect and that I lack words. I like that you understand my made up words. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks! And, your English is great! Yes, I went from no outboards to a bunch, because my friend inherited a 12' aluminum boat, and his didn't run properly. They don't cost much over here, maybe $200, which is almost the cost of one part ... so I accidentally started collecting a few, as they pop up. I have 2 Yamaha 8 hp, one 2 stroke, one 4 stroke, and they are real nice and quiet and run great, but cost a little more than the cheap ones (mostly Johnson/Evenrude which are very common around my home).@@Dasiukas
@@bennyblanko3 I bought that Suzuki for 200€ here. And it was quite maintained and clean. Some parts with signs of wear, but good overall. And after all my efforts it sits in stern part of Big Mamma under the cushion for 1.5 years already. Waiting for be used 😀
It is called a cotter pin ... but keep is a good approximation for sure! I love that you make the gaskets, even with a punch, like it should be. That clutch dog looked a bit worn too. But, you are the master of keeping everything ship shape!
Thanks! Cotter pin... I'll forget it for sure :)
I think we must get more snow in Idaho mountains. I build a whole plywood cover, with a 2x6 ridge at the back part of the boat, and a sloping 2x4 hip at the front, and plywood covering everything (4' wide x 4' pieces screwed to the ridge) and triangle pieces in the front. Then, I tarp over everything, and screw a few 2' square plywood over the tarp to the plywood below to hold it down (high winds sometimes) and use a bunch of ropes that goes around the whole contraption. Takes me about 3-4 hours to construct, usually when it is already snowing ... heh heh. I was going to tell you to put your outdrive all the way down, but then you already know that, and your bumper even comes off. I left mine tilted a little, and it froze and broke the impeller when the little bit of water froze in there. I use that same cover for my summer cover, to keep any rain and dirt out of the back of the boat. They usually last about 5 years before getting too thin, and ripping. I don't tighten them as much as you, as they are not really strong, especially after being in the sun a long time. But, in the winter, I build a plywood cover, so the windshield doesn't break from all the snow (I've had the whole boat with the plywood roof, and sitting on the trailer covered with the top of the plywood 5' below the top of the snow. You can just walk right across the snow, over the top of the boat, and then if you want, onto the roof beyond, which is 12' off the ground. I actually changed where I leave it now, so it is more windy and in the sun, and the snow doesn't build up that much anymore. Thanks for the video, and have a great winter!
Wow! Thanks for the detailed description. Your design is much more robust! Why not build a full shed for the boat and trailer? That's my dream. To be able to get inside the boat in the winter and do some maintenance work. Hope we'll not have too much snow here and my construction will survive.
Yes, that is what I need. A shed/barn to put the boat in, during the winter, so I can make it perfect when the weather gets warmer. I personally don't have enough property for that, and I'm getting older too (60 years old). My friend who I go boating with (where I leave my boat now) lives in the country on 40 acres, but just got himself a new old boat (boston whaler 14') and put that into a barn. I'm going to see how the boat fares this winter. Good luck to you, and I enjoy all your videos!@@Dasiukas
Oh, and I took the out drive off, and put it in my garage for some work. So, I'll probably be referring back to your previous videos. I want to change the impeller, and also take the gearing out of my old drive and put it in my "newer" one, and maybe change the prop. too, as the gearing is too low for my V8 boat (very similar to your motor).
Light shed is not a big deal to build but yes, it needs some space. My first boat was (is) also 14'. There are some videos about it in my cannel too. It's like a wasp if compared to my bigger boat (last one could be considered as a May bug :) ) Good luck with your repair! It's nice when you have enough time in winter and don't need to be hurry. Easier to do all things properly.
wow, massive job in the end, was thinking of doing myself but quite glad I took to trailer place now!
A rather pragmatic evaluation 😀. Thanks for your comment

Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to film and post your maintenance. I didn't understand a word but what I got from your video was, if it's not working properly, take it apart and have a go. My Alko tow hitch is seized and doesn't pull back out, therefore leaving the brakes on. I don't think a new damper will fix it (although may be an additional problem) but I'm now full of confidence to at least take it off and have a look.
I’m happy my video could help you. One thing you missed is you can use English subtitles. Just turn them on. I do translate all my videos to English.

What kind of sterndrive was it ? I just got a boat without sterndrive. It needs a omc sterndrive which i am buying this weekend. Just need an little advice regarding how to install and few more questiona
That is so called OMC electric shift. Was produced till 1976 ( or 1977). later was different lower unit with hydro mechanical shift. What are you interested in?
Ohhh, you should NEVER press on the inner ring on the bearing when pressing in a new one, as you put a lot of force on the bearing itself and will not last long after that. The outer steel ring should take the force when pressing it in. At least it looks like you are pressing on the inner part of the bearing.
Thank you for your notice. I’ve been using the old bearing to push the new one further on. Pushing the outer ring. Some force could go to the inner too though. Anyway that wheel is okay for the second season already
