5 days backpacking in the Victorian high country in search of mature Sambar stags. With blairy taking a nice stag on the first day, and spotting a few other stags we knew that this trip would turn out alright. There’s nothing better then the Victorian high country and 5 days backpacking to soak it all in. Hope you all enjoy!!!

Proper hunters not many out there trek and a half and just to camp guess the pressure pushes them deeper in
Yeah bit of pressure closer to the road where we were and from down low but maybe just wrong time of year potentially
Good video mate. Doing the rounds trying to catch up on the usual UA-cam crew haha. 👍
Cheers mate
Amazing footage mate! Would I be able to share it?
Cheers mate, yeah go for it
Um yeah Horse every where in that area north of Omeo. Better on the chew than freeze dried gut rot. Um good effort.
Great vid mate! Good to see some numbers out there, nice footage of them too! All the best this year and safe travels 👍🏻
Cheers mate, all the best to you aswell
How you go all weekend with wet boots? Its bad enough one day if fall in the drink. Have you tried a set of crocs and change back when you cross?
Yeah definitely try and keep them dry, I actually do pack a pair of crocs in with me. My boots that were wet from this trip were from the rain and the shrubs on the ground.
Great stuff mate!! hope you have some successful hunting in 2025. 👍👍
Cheers mate, same to you👍
Good video, well done.
Cheers
I can't walk the big ks anymore due knee replacements. Our boots we used walk in dam the pack them full of paper to break in .lstill luv remote 66 I miss those big trips
A good hunt, boys! A good watch.
Cheers glad you enjoyed it
Sick video ive got a pair of Zamberlans aswell ive found you got to wear the thickest pair of socks you can find until you break them in then they are great to wear last trip I did over 20ks in them with no problems
Cheers mate, yeah I think you’re right with that. My first pair were the exact same had to really wear them in
They are what dogs used to look like. The average caveman campsite dog looked like that.
Enjoyed watching the nice work 👍...may i ask where is that river ? Very nice 👌
New subscriber to your channel mate. Great stuff! 👍
Cheers mate. Glad you enjoyed it
Great adventure. What month were you there mate?
Hey mate September we were in there
@@intothehighcountry we would have almost crossed paths with you then. We had some bloody hot days.
@@Australian_Hunting_Backcountryyeah we had some warm days up there. How’d use guys go?
@ mixed success mate. We took a nice fallow with a cracker of a shot but Sambar were very thin. We packrafted and fished too so had a bloody awesome time.
Did you delete my question/comment? Where did it go?
I haven’t deleted any comments so not sure what’s happened. What was your question?
Your original question is actually under my previous comment and it's still there if you have a look.👍
Youll get rafters all thru the week, you cant leave a guy line across the river its a bit rude. Also commen to meet hunters on horseback (with dogs) who drop in from height off the pp on the otherside. Gets hunted quite abit the whole strech. Its the mansfield for alot of CBR and NSW hunters.
We did talk about next time putting a flag on the rope just so it’s a bit easier to see but we needed a way to get the raft across. We didn’t see any campsites across the other side which I thought was strange I thought there’d be more guys getting in from there but seems there is
@intothehighcountry nah they'll still cut it. I have had them come thru on twilight. Your guy line is just dangerous. Just do what everyone else does and row or swim it. Dry bag and undies. Setting up a guy line for 5days across a river that gets the traffic it does is peak rude.
My fly camp used to be right where all that horse sign was but I never did much good. I reckon your sambar dropped about 75 m away from where I shot a nice 28 a few years ago. Haven’t been back this spring because the rivers too high and I’m buggered if I’m carrying a boat that far.
Definitely wasn’t any deer sign around where all that horse sign was but it was dry so hard to tell if deer are moving through. Always cool to hear other stories of hunters hunting the same area. We only spent the 1 afternoon hunting the other side but certainly looks good
always enjoy your viedo mate, learned a lot, and very fun to watch~ good luck and safe hunting
Cheers appreciate the comment.
Nice video on a very iconic river.👍
Cheers. Definitely is
I'm north of Sydney, what river, like what's the nearest town.
Well done mate great video
Cheers appreciate it👍
pretty lame..
Nice vid ... That place has had the ass raped out of it by the Culling ..Has put it back more than 20 years as far as deer numbers .
@@TheRutthunter yeah seems that way, first time hunting it. Seems they are culling it again at the moment
No animals were harmed during the making of this film
@@darylhodgen9810 😂
@@intothehighcountry sorry mate - couldn’t help myself - enjoyed the vid - will now subscribe - good luck with the next hunt
@@darylhodgen9810all good I had a laugh
Geee you made that vid abit easy to figgure out where you went. Anyway that country hunts a little different to the normal vic grounds.
Hunts different in which way
This music at the start of video is rubbish. It’s a hunt video the sound of the bush always wins just saying 👍
Good job mate good video
Cheers mate appreciate the comment
Good stuff.
Cheers 👍
Great effort gents. Those game trails early in the video screamed Brumbies. The helicopter shooters smashed the deer in that general area.Keep putting in the hard yards and the rewards will follow. Thanks for sharing your hunts.Cheers,Rob.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah as soon as we got in and seen those trails we knew there were going to be brumbies around. Probably didn’t expect as many as we seen though. Yeah I later found out that they had culled that area. Was spewing
From memory a huge area was opened up to stalking, and it was portrayed as a heap of new land for hunters to explore. Then it was hammered by helicopter shooting. We saw multiple dead deer and pigs left to rot.Such a waste.Safe hunting.
@@highcountryrob5534yeah it definitely is. My mate seen a couple of pigs up there but we didn’t find any dead animals. But doesn’t mean the culls haven’t knocked them around
Nice mate, dry looking country! Not in the usual areas going off the horses 😂
Yeah decided to try somewhere new
Top vid boys , was that in Cobberas area ?
Cheers. Not quite but general direction
@@intothehighcountry When I saw the horses that area came to mind .
@@HLsabfew up that way aswell is there?
We have all found the thick stuff 👍😂
Yeah bloody annoying when you do 🤣
Good call that Stag is still maturing - he will be awesome in a couple of years. It’s great to see an ethical hunter make a sustainable decision. Too often some blokes just can’t help but pull the trigger on a good breeding animal. QDM and we all benefit. Love ya work
Yeah hopefully he can live that long. Guess only time will tell.
Love ya work Maso!
Cheers mate.👍
Nice work, good to see a few around, pressure would have dropped off since last year over summer. We only saw a hind and small stag last time we were there. Then nothing but rubbish left by others on the other side of the river. So we carried more out just not what we hoped to carry out.
Yeah always seem to be able to find hinds and small stags in there. That’s disappointing about the rubbish good work for cleaning it up 👍👍
@@intothehighcountry I don’t get the mentality. We could possibly lose access and hunting in these pristine environments so why do we give those that want to close access any ammunition.
@@johnmac6226 no idea, some people just don’t care.
Great effort mate, you got to the miles if you want the smiles. Keep it up cheers 🍻
Cheers mate Certainly do👍
Nice one mate
Cheers mate 👍
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching👍
@@intothehighcountry I just started sharing my vids… youtube.com/@babahunts?feature=shared
Beautiful footage mate! Its a shame the stag never showed the next morning, but at least the girls came out and put on a show. Very nice work
Thanks for the comment, Yeah definitely would have been good to just watch him the following morning but that’s sambar hunting I guess. Yeah the hinds definitely were out and about feeding so that keeps you entertained.
Love the authenticity mate, too many new hunters get sucked into the youtube trap and have expectations of dropping stags every time they step in the bush, because thats all they see. Great video! Looks like a successful trip
Appreciate the comment mate, yeah I guess every trip is successful if you take something away from it not just shooting something
Enjoying your the adventure are you hunting solo looking to go but not to sure were to start
Hey mate glad you’re enjoying the content, I just done my first solo backpack hunt but usually go on trips with mates but a lot of the time hunt solo. Then just meet up at the end of the day. Hunting with a mate is always a good way to start out
Hey mate great video! Lately just been following your journey and loved every bit of it! Is that places you went to near Howqua area and towards tobacco flats? Cheers
Hey mate glad you’re enjoying it, na none of the areas I hunt are that way.
@@intothehighcountry Thanks for the reply mate! I'm new to deer hunting here in Vic, places I've mentioned do you think are decent places? I'd assume anywhere is good really, I'm just a novice in this sort of stuff but putting in the time and getting the hours in to learn is the only way! cheers.
@@CarrMichaelQuitay honestly I haven’t hunted that way really at all, but I know there’s deer around that area. I guess my advice to guys starting out is, pick an area walk a lot to begin with, walk a big river flat or ridgeline and just try and take in as much sign as possible- rubs, droppings, foot prints, wallows, game trails food sources ect, take notes of when you are seeing sign or even deer and go from there. Be sure to keep thermals and wind in your face the best you can. Hope that helps a little.
@@intothehighcountry Mate, appreciate the info & advice! I will definitely put the hours in!
I thought it would have been a given, that you would harvest the hind quarters, back steaks, eye fillets & the heart. Seems somewhat wasteful otherwise. Cheers for the video & to your success. 🍻😎
I was a fair way from the car. With a buck in this condition I can’t imagine the meat was going to be much better than for dog meat. Maybe it is a waste but the farmer up there just shoots them and leaves them so guess taking some is better then none. Cheers for the comment👍👍
I once saw a Murray Cod suck a fallow deer fawn off the edge of a dam, incredible stuff!
Well done mate
Cheers👍
Great Buck! Thanks for the video mate As a new stalker, It’s always interesting to hear and see your Hunts, thoughts and strategies mate. Cheers and Well Done! 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it mate, cheers
What snake?
Great video mate. Always good watching the young ones move around.
Cheers mate👍
Thanks for the edit cob! When’s the next ep coming out?
Hopefully soon, I’ve got a couple of fallow hunts coming up doing a couple of fox hunts aswell so I’ll get some footage from them and put it together
@@intothehighcountry bloody sensational mate, good luck!
