The tip of stoking curiosity isn’t just about grabbing students’ attention. Research shows that putting the brain in a curious state can facilitate learning, even when the curiosity is about something else.

When using presentation slides or visuals of some sort while lecturing, the use of relevant images & limited text go hand-in-hand. It has to do w/ dual coding theory, which has recommendations for how to maximize the amount of info students can take in by being mindful of the format of that info.

Giving students multiple examples, especially for key or complex concepts, can facilitate learning. Even just 2 examples will have a much greater effect than 1, & it’s more than just an additive effect. Providing a 2nd example of something has an amplified effect on understanding the core concept. Return to big concepts is a teaching tip about helping key concepts to stand out for students in the sea of information they encounter in a course & about harnessing the power of inserting time in between learning episodes.

Activating background knowledge- specifically prior to learning- is about warming up the oven so to speak to prepare students’ brains for the new information they are about to encounter. Simply getting students to bring to mind what they already know, that is related to the new information, helps them to create more durable memories for the new information.

Relating learning material to students’ lives is a powerful way to help students remember what they are learning. It is a particularly potent form of elaboration.
