Hello there! I'm an organist, pianist, composer, and cellist from Maine, USA. My channel features score videos of some of my favorite obscure works of all instrumentations, as well as some of my own performances, improvisations, and compositions.

Tigran Hamasyan - Paschal Vignette (Transcription)
Переглядів 1246 місяців тому
My transcription of one of three improvisations that Tigran posted on his social media on Easter 2023. I'm certain of at least one error, I only noticed it during editing and was too lazy to go back and fix it. This format with the score overlay is a bit experimental, so I hope it looks alright to everyone else.

Jean Louis Florentz - La croix du sud

Via theorganmag.com ... "Born in 1947, Florentz draws much inspiration from not only the French symphonic tradition, but also from Africa, where he spent much time in the study of natural sciences, literary Arabic and ethnomusicology. La Croix du Sud is inspired by the desolate and chaotic landscape of the Hoggar in the south of the Sahara. This 17-minute piece is in three sections ('périodes')...

Henri Dutilleux - Piéce sans titre « Muss es sein? »
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Composed between The Shadows of Time (1997) and Sur le même accord (2002), Pièce sans titre « Muss es sein? » cryptically responds to the famous question (‘must it be?’) left by Beethoven on the score of his Quartet No. 16 but also refers to the recognisably open-ended nature of Dutilleux’s composition. At the world premiere in 2000, it was programmed as a prelude to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony....

quite dull at times, but some parts get a 6/10
George Benjamin wrote a major work in 1982, "At First Light". Everything he wrote before and after is so dull (though well written) that it almost makes you think he had someone else write that one notable work for him!
Interesting perspective! He can be quite "academic" (if that's still the politically correct term) and this certainly isn't my favorite of his works or anything... "Written on Skin" and "Dream of the Song" are where his writing really shines in my opinion.
"In the Mirror" recalls parts of Stravinsky's "Symphonies of Wind Instruments"

I always loved this piece and it's quite a thrill to see it with the sheet music. I don't understand how it is possible to do some of the things he asks, assistant or not.
These pieces don't inspire.
Is this the type of music that Debussy would've ended up composing had he lived until the 1940s or 50s? His late works moved toward Neoclassicism but some of them, like the second book of Preludes and Etudes were still pretty cutting-edge. So, would he have eventually begun writing atonal music?
Maybe. I feel that from Chopin to Debussy to Dutilleux is in the grand tradition of French preludes.
@@bobcinqand Messiaen!
Really the influence of Debussy’s Etudes is so audible. Straight continuation ⚡️
Yet another piece in an endless stream of modernist trash that proves Mahler's dictum: "Interesting is easy. Beautiful is difficult." Confronted with the joys and tragedies of life, no one turns to music like this. Fall in love, and this music sounds psychotic. Experience the death of a spouse, and this music also sounds psychotic. Because it is.
God forbid people enjoy things, glad you're out keeping the streets safe! Curious what your source is for me not experiencing "the joys and tragedies of life"? I think you skipped a few chapters.
It's fascinating to see these comments under music that I personally consider to be quite accessible compared to the more extreme modernists. This isn't that far removed from Debussy and it has some of the same charm and moody colorfulness. I find it quite relaxing and dreamy. Mahler by the way would have supported music like this just like he supported and defended Schönberg (even though he didn't understand his music).
HERMOSO ¡¡¡
Я считал, что он более интересный композитор. Я ошибался.
Yeah that 5/16 was not played as 5/16 lol
Hello, is the pdf score available?
Как же достала эта "академичность"!
Hello ! As a fellow composer student i think these pieces are beatiful and very well made 🙏🏻 it inspired me to make short pieces like these and combine them for a project, thank you so much for the beatiful art!
@@Whatismusic123 That was a bit uncalled for!
Can I get the score?
Mit 32‘ in Rèc….?
Good luck finding one of those, but last time I performed this I used the Great 32' Violone with swell coupled.
I think these pieces are very thoughtful
Comment est-ce possible de maîtriser une telle polyrythmie ?
Other than Knots, the rest of the suite isn't that interesting.
I liked Mosaic as well.
They played knots completely wrong
GB is a fine musician, is intelligent, generally likeable, and has a marvellous ear, but his music has zero personality. He’s been massively hyped by his publishers, the BBC and the Establishment generally. Of course he was Messiaen’s blue-eyed boy, so that did him no harm at the start of his meteoric career. Plenty of money helped too, of course. Not quite the Emperor’s new clothes perhaps, but close.
Existe-t-il plus belle musique au monde ?
gorgeous
Excellent 🎉
"Basque Landscapes" Excellent playing!🎉
Is this rather impressionistic or expressionistic?
Revulsionistic.
Neither nor
Neither
This rendition is beautiful! Well done, and thank you for sharing. Mildred Andrews from the University of Oklahoma used to play this piece; it's not heard often. My biography on Mildred Andrews Boggess has recently been published with Wayne Leupold Editions.
Is the sound been transposed?
A fifth up yeah, it seems
Superb!
😍Variation V !!
when contemporary music meets baroque instrument 🤯🤯
Olivier Latry must be one of the greatest living musicians...
Basada en J S Bach , maravilloso ✨✨✨
The way he interweaves two different poems in variation V is just out of this world perfection and talent
16:12 the 2nd sing an E instead of a D on the word “had” is there a misprint in the score or did they sing a different version?
Stunning. Just wondering what the choirs are?
Nice Job!!!
Œuvre. Otherwise, great! (I had to pick on you!) J'espère que tout va bien !
my guy is playing triplets in mvt 2
Man that 5/16 sure was... interesting
damn I'd better get learning, I have an organ course in a month lol
Is there anything this man have done wrong?
Ikr
great
Wow, what a complex and intricate composition for choir. I love it, when Christmas is being approached not only in the usual sentimental ways but with deeper considerations, even somewhat harsh and discomforting. It's a much more intensive Christmas experience.
Amazing piece
Holy shit. I love it!
Nice
