Dave Grohl - Friend of a Friend (1990 solo)
"Friend of a Friend" was the first acoustic song Dave Grohl had ever written.
The song was written by Grohl in 1990 (and recorded in secret the same year), and it was about his first impressions of new bandmates singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain, and bassist Krist Novoselic. He first wrote it in Kurt's Olympia apartment when Grohl stumbled upon an acoustic guitar owned by Cobain (referring to the lyrics "It was his friend's guitar").
This version of the song was released in 1992 in a collection of songs (entitled Pocketwatch) under the pseudonym 'Late!'
On April 30, 1997, the song was recorded live for a BBC Evening Session. In 2005, Grohl revisited the song, recording it yet again for the acoustic disc of the Foo Fighters' In Your Honor. The song was also included on the band's live album Skin and Bones.
The 2005 re-release of this track was dedicated to Cobain.
--- Lyrics ---
He needs a quiet room
With a lock to keep him in
It's just a quiet room
And he's there
He plays an old guitar
With a coin found by the phone
It was his friends guitar
That he played
He's never been in love
But he knows just what love is
He said nevermind
And no-one speaks
He thinks he drinks too much
Cos when he tells his too best friends
'I think I drink too much'
No-one speaks
No-one speaks
No-one speaks
He plays an old guitar
With a coin found by the phone
It was his friends guitar
That he played
When he plays
No-one speaks
No-one speaks
When he plays
No-one speaks

I love this early stuff
Such a beautiful song. I remember hearing the released version as a kid and thinking, damn this sounds so much like Nirvana, no wonder when it was written back then. Its like a time capsule to the melodic language of those years. Beautiful!
this song and something in the way have such a similar,,, timing? energy? cadence? I'm so surprised that there isn't any type of mix combining. the two. they aren't exact flips of each other, and i wouldn't want them to be. but i one is describing a problem spiraling out of hand while no one says anything, and ine is the person spiraling with nothing to challenge them!???? just thoughts. please just leave me alone if you think it's dumb. it's not that deep.
This song makes me cry every single time 😭
It's sad how he is talking about Kurt when he first joined the band
@@landenkilgoredefinitely not hard to imagine how he needed his space. How that effected David… being on the outside of that door. 😭😭😭😭
Sounds like parts of this became "Walking After You".
DAVE GROHL, KURT COBAIN AND KRIST NOVOSELIC ❤❤❤

Kind of died off with Kurt, mad season and tripod were kind of the last grunge albums really
good thing dave had friends
A good sonho. O love this song, buts is a fake post. Sorry.
I love Dave grohls younger voice like I’m sorry but the songs he made back then were so good if only he had more confidence back then to share more of his ideas he had.
His voice before it was destroyed by years of screaming, smoking and not singing properly.
Street hooker
We used to joke around and say "well what did the last drummer say before the left" ~Dave Grohl
@@suburbanindie That's pish mate you're off your head of you think Dave can't sing anymore
His voice was more melodic back then. Now he resorts to more screaming, but I'm fine with both.
É um foo figths
This is so sad and mournful and Kurt was still alive. It makes me quite emotional
it's like he talks about me
me
No, ME!!!!
I think it was bad luck years ago!
1990 he was neither thought about play in nirvana
You have no clue what you are talking about. Cobain & Novoselic invited Grohl to Seattle, where he arrived on Sept. 21, 1990. He auditioned for & joined the band several days later. Dave Grohl's first show with Nirvana, was at The North Shore Surf Club, in Olympia, Washington, October 11th, 1990.
Beautiful tone in his guitar
sounds like something in the way
not really
So glad i found the original recording
When Dave played this again so many years later...it's the same song about his same friend. When he was still alive.
Why couldn’t he keep it in this tune
Well he never brought a guitar with him to Seattle, only drums and some clothes. This was also the first song he ever wrote for a guitar and probably the first time he played a guitar since he was a little kid
@@mickroyster6442 he wrote Gods Look Down before
I'm here because of safer than heaven
me too lol
Is this his 90s recording of this song? Please be true please be true!!!
Video description says '90
The Late! recordings took place between 90 and 91, this was right as he was joining Nirvana.
@@jimmypesto3179 Wrong, he made this in 1988
@@matchboxlover9797 hahaha no
Yeah I think it was on the Pocketwatch demo tape
Kind of weird how the word he sang the loudest in the song was "nevermind".
no shit sherlock
@@icouch Well the point, Sherlock, is that the song predates nevermind by many months....teen spirit was even written yet.
I think it’s weird that he met someone with such an essence that he felt he needed to write about it!!!
@@cjsligojones5101 few years actually
@@matchboxlover9797 nevermind musica are wrote by kurt into 1989 - 1991
I'm so sick of Google telling me about songs dave grohl wrote between 1999 -1995 as if he wrote them all directly after Cobains murder in 94' I'm hoping it's only Google getting things wrong and not dave just rewriting history (doesn't seem like is M.O.) Cuz If that were the case that would just be sad and he'd be a sad liar like Courtney Love (Cobains sabateur). Where's Michael "Cali" DeWitt these days? Anyone have any clue where that scumbag is?
He's probably still living under Courtney's dress.
Super i Love nirvana and dave I miss 90's
Me too

So, this is about kurt and krists first impression? I guess... Then maybe the later version took a deeper meaning.......
yes, is about kurt and krist
@@lttorresi No, he made this in 1988 before he even met Kurt. It's about his drinking problem
@@matchboxlover9797 he had a drinkin problem¿
He actually wrote it in 1990, it was about them all being in Kurts’s shitty apartment, not knowing what was coming next. Dave talks about krist’s drinking (which is actually true if you’ve watched ‘montage of heck’) and kurts longing for affection and belonging.
I read it's about Buzz Osborne and Kurt. Buzz was Dave's connection to Kurt. Friend of a friend.
I love this song!!
Me too 😊
