Returning an estate sale find to its rightful owner
Back in May I found a scrapbook at an estate sale while visiting Los Angeles. When I discovered that it was focused solely on series of plays from a specific theater in Santa Monica, I decided to reach out to that theater to see if they'd be interested in having it as an artifact for their collection. Low and behold, they did! I dropped it off and then did a little more thrifting in Burbank on this new trip to the LA area. #VintageShopping #estatesalefinds #thriftyadventures

I do have some family things going on as of late so I'm likely to be a bit more sporadic in my posts over the course of the next few weeks, but I'm still hoping to keep on posting...and love the fact that you were willing to circle back around to check in. I hope that things are going well for you too!

    We seem to have similar tastes. Paper dolls...check! Vintage board games....check! Old doll clothes...another check! Funky record covers?....Of course! haha I could go on. This was fun to watch except for one thing, the music was much louder than your voice. I'm only learning myself how to edit and haven't even tried to put music in but I'm going to note it myself for when I do. I hope you don't find that rude to say. I would want someone to tell me. You have a sweet personality and LOVE your ideas so it's in a helpful way I critique. Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to seeing what you do with the game box and record sleeve as I also have some of these things and wonder what to do with them.

    Great haul and great sewing themed tags! I especially liked the 3D one at the very end. Great way to use the old items still in their packaging. Were both old packages zippers? I only saw the front one not the back one. Super cute!

    • @unearthedrelics
      @unearthedrelics 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for your note & great questions. One package was a zipper. I ended up just using a spool of thread glued to the front to make it stand up. I also gather seam binding packages and packets of buttons and snaps or other closures. Any of those would be great for a project like this one. The pattern cutout I used on that one was from a pack of precut ones I’d ordered from Etsy last fall. They came mounted on cardstock so it was a little sturdier than the pattern package on its own.

    Very interesting estate sales. The house in Silverlake was amazing. When I attend estate sales I always wonder the story behind the peoples lives that lived there. We recently attended a sale which gave me strange vibes when walking through the house. Turns out the man was serving 30 in prison! Love that you are going to try to return the scrapbook to the organization. Thanks for sharing your great haul.

    • @unearthedrelics
      @unearthedrelics 3 місяці тому

      Woah - your estate sale gave me chills! I suspect the folks at the Silverlake house had been flea market sellers because there were bins and bins of things that look like the kind of stuff you'd see at flea markets...but they were also clearly lovers of a variety of vintage things. The house kind of had a tree house vibe to it...so I also wonder if it was self-built. In any case, I agree that the little glimpse you into people's lives when shopping estate sales is usually interesting. I just booked a trip back to LA and plan to take the scrapbook back with me and hand it over to the theater if they want it...not sure what I'll do with it if they don't want it. :)

    Great finds! How do you use the Jenga pieces?

    • @unearthedrelics
      @unearthedrelics 4 місяці тому

      I use the Jenga blocks to make collages, often made with Bingo cards, stand-up. This was a trick I learned from Creative Girl Vintage. You just glue one or two of the jenga blocks to the bottom back of the card, and voila, it becomes a free standing working of art. Thrifting and antiquing rank right up there on my list of places to visit when I travel. Its a free or inexpensive means of being entertained (unless you have really expensive taste in antiques) and I've found that it is a great way to learn about a location that you are visiting. Good job. If you have cats, they apparently don't have access to this room. :-)

      I have grandcats that come to stay every now and then - so now I'm curious about how they might try to wreak havoc! They are usually just seeking out obscure hiding spots. ;) Happy crafting!

    You did hit the jackpot! I also love old suitcases and have recently made one into a little table by adding hairpin legs. I am going to decoupage the interior with pages from an old dictionary I thrifted. Great video. Thanks for sharing!

      Your table sounds really cool. I have some stacked sets that double was side tables...but adding legs means you'd need fewer to get a similar effect. I always find it hard to pass up an old suitcase. I have a number of them in different styles and love the fact that I can squirrel away other treasures inside of them (e.g., holiday decor or fabric). Thanks so much for watching and commenting! :)

      Old letters, sewing patterns and photos are things I never pass up - because they are so light and so easy to find uses for in different crafts. :) I found the letters and photos in a padded mailing envelope in a bin I'd already looked through twice - so either someone had them and threw them back or it just took a little while for them to be uncovered - either way I definitely felt lucky! Thanks for watching and commenting :)

      Thanks for commenting - its been an interesting challenge but so far I've been finding ways to avoiding buying new stuff. I'd love to get to the point where I could do a "no buy" (anything) year...but I don't know if I could do it - I like hunting for secondhand treasures too much!!

      Great suggestion, I'm still working on getting my camera set up right with my new desk - I was bumping my head on it when I had it down lower, but I'm sure I can figure out a solution that will work ;) - I appreciate you taking time to share that feedback - it will definitely help me to improve future videos. I would of like to see a up close picture of what you were making camera a little to far away to see the tags..being made..where did you get the images..nothing was in the link..

      Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment. I'll aim to zoom thing in a bit closer in future videos, but you can take a look at the closeups at thethriftysisters.net/2024/03/18/st-patricks-day-bookmarks/. I find most of the items that I use in my crafts at various thrift stores and garage sales but will occasionally scan and share things when they don't have copyright marks or are older than various copyright cut offs. That seemed to be the case for one of the stickers that I used in this week's video - which you can find (and are welcome to use in your own crafting) at the link above.
