Thirumalisai Alwar’s Early Life and Spiritual Awakening

After being abandoned by his parents and revived by the grace of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, his life was destined for a higher purpose. From a very young age, Thirumalisai showed signs of detachment from worldly pleasures. His focus was always on the deeper truths of life, and he pursued spiritual knowledge with relentless dedication.
Though born into a Shaivite family, Thirumalisai Alwar’s devotion turned towards Lord Vishnu, and he eventually became one of the most revered Vaishnavite saints. His deep desire for spiritual truth led him to explore different paths and philosophies, but he ultimately found solace in complete surrender to Lord Vishnu.
Renouncing the World

Thirumalisai Alwar believed that attachment to the world is the root of all suffering. His teachings often emphasized the idea that the material world is transient, and true happiness lies in surrendering to the divine will of Perumal (Lord Vishnu). This spiritual philosophy forms the core of many of his hymns.
Miracles and Spiritual Wisdom
Thirumalisai Alwar was not only a poet and philosopher but also a miracle worker. His deep devotion to Lord Vishnu allowed him to perform several miracles, demonstrating his spiritual power to those who doubted the grace of the Lord. One of the most famous miracles associated with Thirumalisai Alwar is the story of a childless couple.
A couple, unable to bear children for many years, sought the blessings of Thirumalisai Alwar. The Alwar, moved by their plight, prayed to Lord Vishnu, and soon after, the couple was blessed with a child. This miracle further cemented Thirumalisai Alwar’s reputation as a saint with divine powers, but he always attributed his abilities to the grace of Lord Vishnu.
The Divine Poetry of Nalayira Divya Prabandham
Thirumalisai Alwar contributed significantly to Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the revered collection of 4,000 Tamil hymns composed by the 12 Alwars. His hymns focus on the concepts of bhakti (devotion) and vairagya (renunciation), and they reflect his immense spiritual insight.
In his hymns, Thirumalisai Alwar often challenges conventional beliefs, urging people to see beyond the superficial aspects of religious rituals and focus on the true essence of devotion. His poetry also reflects his unwavering belief in the power of Perumal to grant liberation to the soul.
The Story of the Aged Woman
One of the lesser-known stories about Thirumalisai Alwar involves an old woman who had been serving him for many years. She was extremely devoted to the Alwar, and out of gratitude, Thirumalisai Alwar decided to reward her devotion. With his divine grace, he transformed the old woman into a young and beautiful maiden.
This miraculous transformation caught the attention of the local king, who became infatuated with her beauty. The king demanded that she marry him, but the woman, with the wisdom imparted by the Alwar, declined the offer. The king, angered by her refusal, turned to Thirumalisai Alwar for an explanation. The Alwar calmly explained that true beauty lies not in physical appearance but in spiritual purity, a lesson the king eventually came to accept.
Thirumalisai Alwar’s Final Years
Thirumalisai Alwar spent his later years in Kanchipuram, continuing to spread the message of devotion and surrender to Lord Vishnu. His teachings attracted numerous followers, including his devoted disciple, Kanikannan. Together, they journeyed to many temples, offering prayers and singing hymns in praise of the Lord.
