Harvest, Weed, Prepare - Allotment Gardening Diary For September 2023
2024 was well and truly the year of the slug. Everyone seems to have lost so many seedlings. They were even eating things you wouldn’t expect them to. Fingers crossed for next year.
Yes, they were relentless, no matter many how many we caught.
my tomatoes and zucchini were very poor this year too. even my potatoes disappointed, but I cannot complain, some of that was my fault as I should have watered more and maybe fertilized earlier and maybe more often. never-mind, God willing, Id have big plans for next spring.
That's the way to look at things. If it goes badly one year, you can improve it next year. Best of luck for next year.
we had some very hot stretches here too!
Ours came and went quickly. Worst year we've seen on the allotment. My neighbour says it's the worst in the 42 years that he's been here.
@@OurEcoLife Have you been impacted by all the recent (September'24) rain? I have seen videos of all flooding. Do you think the remnants of Hurricane Helene, that has so devastated the south and eastern states and now crossing our Canadian maritime provinces; impact your autumn gardening?
@@carolwhite6979 We're used to rain in this country. A little more doesn't bother us. 😁We're a fair way up a hill so flooding is not an issue here.
those bits of wire are great for twisting around Christmas lights to hold them to frames or tree branches or for attaching ornaments .
Thanks for the tips. Lots of uses for wire on the allotment too.
you need to take a big thermos of coffee with you so you can take lots of little breaks when it rains! ☺️
I do! I can't sit in the shed for too long as I get anxious about being idle.
Those babies sure kept you busy! It is a relief yo know they are fully fledged and making their way safely about on you plot.
Yes, all chicks fledged, which is an achievement for the parents.
@@OurEcoLife ❤️❤️❤️
That would have given you a start, to think the chicks were gone. It was lovely to see those wee heads pop up! Your creative solution for attaching casters to your seed stand worked really well!
Thank you! The castors have worked out well.
It is good to plan ahead for the hot days of summer to reduce your watering demands and allow yourself time to appreciate the peace at the allotment not just all the work. I just wanted to say how lively to have robins as house guests!
They are great house guests: quiet, don't eat much or spend hours in the bathroom :)
looks like your spring was well underway. you are lucky to be harvesting still in March.
I'm working on being able to harvest year round which would save work on preserving things. Getting there is killing me.
Is it a long trek to the allotment from your home? It might be frustrating to rum from showers and get in the door to a sunny afternoon!
Yes it's a 25 minute walk so I don't want to be running back and forth.
Playing catch up on your old videos from spring. It is good to see you weee able to get that window put right in the greenhouse! Also nice to see the smile at the end. a sure sign spring is on the way!
Welcome back! Spring came along with a slug explosion and loads of weeds ;)
You sound like me! stretching the useful life as long as you can! yes. Take care!
I am! I make things last as long as possible.
It is important to recognize your limits. there is no shame in using weed blocking fabric, it is making the best use of your time. Every gardener has to make some compromises to adapt to changing conditions, weather, time, and physical. For me, that means coping with knee issues that developed over the summer. .take care.
True, but one feels guilty when others complain.
@@OurEcoLife Try not to feel guilty about the choices you make to make the best use of your time and energy. The thing about weed blocking fabric is, it works well in the short term and gives you flexibility. You can always put wood chip on it to disguise it if you want. I understand some of that fabric tends to fray but if you have a small BBQ torch you cab singe it, and that stops the fibres from coming apart on the cutlines.
Hey new to your channel we have just took over an allotment over 3 weeks ago it was a blank canvas apart from the jungle of weeds but were making good progress looking forward to learn some tips :) we have also started vlogging it on our channel so we can look back next year to see how far we have come
Well you're lucky yours wasn't as bad as mine was at the beginning. You're making good progress so good luck with your allotment.
@@OurEcoLifeyes yours was a real jungle but what great progress you have made 😊
Thank you for sharing! God bless! 🙂🙏
You are so welcome. I hope you found it useful.
Interesting on how you are watering some of the potted plants. A video on how you water the rest would also be interesting. Do you use the tap and a hose/bucker, rain barrel, or previously made compost tea? You are a very patient man, and as they say, that's a virtue.
Thank you. I have some rain collection but in summer I also use tap water when the barrels are running low. I will be adding more containers and more barrels so once that's done I will make a video on the watering. I do use weeds to make liquid fertilisers and if there's enough interest I might do a video about those too.
I wouldn't worry about power tool noise - as long as we can hear you it doesn't matter. There is a plus side - while they've got tools going, they can't hear you apparently talking to yourself!
They already think I'm crazy with all my "strange" ways like mulching and not digging. My immediate neighbours know I'm recording videos. The others can't see me and probably think I'm talking on the phone.
It’s a shame you can’t train the badgers to dig up the paving slabs and lengths of rusty iron. Oh the glory days of May when the sun made on oh so brief appearance.
Yes Adam. If I'd known that was all we were going to get, I would have tried to enjoy the sun while we had it. Hopefully it'll be back again this year.
I find it refreshing to see a good honest video showing the good and bad. I built a carrot bed and just like you I’ve got a good covering of weeds before any signs of a carrot 😂. At times it feels like a constant battle to make any progress but I know I’m not the only one.
I appreciate that. Some videos show only the perfect bits and make the rest of us feel bad. Weeds are a fact of life, especially in direct sown beds that can't be mulched. I'm trying carrots in buckets this year to see if that helps to keep weeding down - at least bindweed can't get into them!
@@OurEcoLife bindweed will find its way into anything 😡.
Busy time of year! Glad youre on the mend 😊
Yes, I'm improving slowly but it's slow to get rid of the cough. Thank you.
Ugh. We are getting our worst weather of the winter right now. Storms galore
It'll soon be over and you can start planting. Is your garden still flooded or can you use the raised beds?
@@OurEcoLife still flooded. I have a little raised bed area that I can still use.
Just came across your channel, looking forward to seeing your journey. Love the brick shed.
Welcome aboard! I've had fun along the journey and hope you do too.
Great worker, hard work, fair play to him, he's getting the job done properly.
Thank you very much.
you did well with your autumn crops and plans for the compost bins! Plus we're almost up to date for the '24 growing season! thank you for sharing!
Yes, almost caught up with the editing of what I've recorded.
You should get a huge amount of compost from that large bay. I wouldn’t look forward to sifting it through.
I'm adding more containers this year so the compost will get used up. Looking at mechanical solutions for sifting the compost but not sure which would be best.
your tomato house does a great job of protecting and supporting growth! it must smile delicious in there! Powdery mildew is a read pain to get rid of! Good to see all the zucchini too!
Yes it does, especially when I touch the basil under the tomatoes.
The final shot of the greenhouse full of tomatoes is what sums up allotment gardening for me. That’s what I remember as a small child visiting my grandparents.
I always start the day in the greenhouse. That gives me the motivation to tackle any job as I feel certain it will end well (even when it doesn't).
@@OurEcoLife when the greenhouse is full of fruit I just enjoy sitting down and soaking it all in.
@@adamdaykin4052 I don't have the room to sit in there but I know how you feel.
Great job you have done on your allotment. How is your other allotment doing. Will you be showing it soon
Yes I will. I had to concentrate on this one for a year, which I will explain in an upcoming video.
Watching this video has made me even more excited for spring. When the beds are mostly empty it’s nice to see plants going in.
Yes it's good to see allotments in action when our weather keeps us indoors. Like you, I've got tiny chilli, pepper and onion seedlings on the go but not much else can be done in early February.
@@OurEcoLife I’m just trying to make sure everything is in place ready for this season. It’s just a waiting game now.
you were very busy last May! I trust the gooseberries have done well and the badger stayed clear of the corn!
The gooseberries did fine and were given away to a neighbour. The fencing worked against the badgers but there are always other pests.
You’ve sent hours digging up carpet and now you’ve revealed a mountain of scrap metal. What has this plot got installed for you next I wonder. You have more patience than me. I think I would have given up months ago.
Yes, it keeps surprising me but I'm getting there and once these things are removed, the allotment is going to be fine.
The raised bed will be a great growing space once it’s filled. Although a bed that size would take a huge amount of material to fill. Luckily you have been saving compostable material for a while now.
Yes Adam, it takes a lot to fill a big raised bed. That's why I'm only building one at a time.
Happy new year 🎉 great job 👏🏼
Thank you! Happy new year t you too.
I can appreciate all the hours of hard work you put in sorting out the lean-to and the Anderson Shelter las year! That was monumental! Looking forward to seeing your results from 2023! Merry Christmas and wishing you all the best in '24!
Thank you! and I wish you a happy and successful 2024.
I look forward to seeing how things progress 👍🏻
Thanks, More is coming soon.
that was a lovely harvest. .yes every year there is something new to learn!
Yes indeed! Learning can be fun but learning the hard way isn't.
Badges, squirrels, rats… it seems like everything is out to destroy our hard work. A lesser man would give up but we persevere. I’m thinking of giving the crown prince a try next year. A plot neighbour said that the taste is very good so I’ll see how they do. Keep fighting the good fight 👍🏻
You forgot pigeons and other birds, mice stealing seeds, not to mention the various invertebrates that plague us ;( Crown prince is great because it stores for a long time as well as being tasty. I've had them keeping well until after the early courgette harvest.
Nice!!!
Thanks.
I put a double layer of cardboard on my paths and top with wood chip. It works well for one summer but you have to do it every year. You did get a great harvest snd lovely apples too.
I can manage the paths with cardboard and woodchips (as in the last video) but trying to do the same with the beds is proving difficult and time consuming.
yeah, cardboard only really helped me after i dug out perrenials before i put it down :/ i found it better than nothing though
I did dig the worst of the perennials but things like bindweed have very deep roots that keep coming back.
ah, good luck @@OurEcoLife
Excellent!
Glad you liked it!
Great to see things going on. I've been so sick, almost dead, almost went to heaven Sept 10th. I hope you keep us straightened out!
Oh dear, sorry to hear that you've been sick. I hope that you're getting better and recovering. Best wishes.
Would the bottomless pot work with melon plants? Most of my melons rotted of from the base this year so if this works I’ll give it a try. I also like the idea of using washing line, far cheaper than canes.
I always raise cucurbits above ground level as we have heavy clay soil that is prone to getting waterlogged so yes this would work for melons too. The washing line is cheaper and lasts far longer than bamboo canes.
It seems like you have as much luck with alliums as I do. I’m trying onions in raised planters covered with vegimesh this year so hopefully no leaf miner. I never knew I could freeze the cloves so I will be giving that a try.
Netting is the only solution for leaf miner. I have put my garlic in a bath tub, covered with netting, this year to see if I can get a decent crop this year.
Hello 👋. I’ve been waiting patiently for your next video but nothing. I hope everything is ok with you.
Thank you for your interest. I'm about to upload the next one.
It is discouraging when you work so hard to clear the weeds and a few weeks... or less... later, and you are over run again! Maybe one of those hoop weed things.... like a dutch hoe, would make quick work of the weeds when they are small. It might be more frequent work but much faster to manage, and you just leave them on the soul to compost down. Your herbs look great!
The problems is that it's difficult to use a hoe with woodchiped beds as they offer resistance and dull the blade quickly. The herb pots are more weeds than herbs, but a good weeding session sorts that out.
You made good use of the old cold frame and all the plastic too!
I try and do the best with what I have to delay things going to the landfill.
Excellent work in your vid. Really enjoyable.
Thank you very much!
Can anyone tell me if this would fit a barrow that has a 12mm diameter shaft?
It came with an attachment for a smaller size. It was a while ago so can't remember the exact measurements but think that was about what mine was. I'll measure mine and let you know.
You definitely make the most of the materials at hand! I hope the new plot holders are able to clear away the weeds and things that are invading your hard cleared areas. Thank you for the great update.
I hope so! The neighbouring plot is a nice allotment and needs someone who will look after it. The person who has taken it doesn't have much time so we'll see what happens.
