The Bennett House - A Podcast
The Bennett House was built by Macon, Georgia heiress Mary Ayers Harris in 1902.
Over the course of time, the home would be owned by several different families. The Bennetts were able to purchase the home in the 1970s.
Today, Darin McClure -a good friend of the Bennetts- owns the home and he is restoring the structure to its former grandeur.
Ethiel Garlington, executive director of Historic Macon Foundation, explains what it takes to restore a home like this.

I am a 67 year old African American male Grassroots Republican Who lives at 523 Cherry Street Apt. 605 in the Dempsey Apartments Macon Bibb County Georgia 31201. My Paternal Ancestors Moved to Macon Georgia About 1866 From the Polehill Plantation in Monroe County Georgia when they Were Given full legal Status as of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendment to the Federal United States Constitution and the State of Georgia Constitution Granting them their freedom from the Institution of Slavery. The First Generation Patriarchs of the Freedmen were Merchants, and Owen and Operated a General Store Forsyth street and Middle street, simultaneously the Other Patriarch Owned and Operated a General Store at the Corner of what is now Riverside Drive and College Street in the Block between Riverside dr and at the College Entrance gate into Rose Hill Cemetery here in Macon Georgia 31201. My Immediate family Owned our family house at 110 College Street which was once at the Corner of college st and Riverside Drive before it burned down about three Years ago. Since the late 1860s, Both Branches of my Paternal Families had White Clientels from Both the College Hill and Vineville Neighborhood near Middle Street which was a Commercial area before the Construction of the I 75 South Over pass. Our Family over the Generations cultivated a Co Dependence with the White Inner Sanctum of Macon Bibb County Georgia. This relation is A Genetic Coding By the Yorke Rite and Scottish Rite of the Free and Accepted Mason of Macon Lodge no. 5 and the Royal Arch and Knights Templars masons of Constantine Lodge No five of the White leadership who Assigned roles and legal status to White and Black People which is an Unwritten law. So the Difficulty that lies in Macon Historical Preservation is due to these unwritten laws. It is a Spiritual Challenge.

I’m so thrilled to have found this. I had the pleasure of meeting the Bennetts back in the late 1990s. Through an odd collection of events (from my admiring Gilbert’s old cars he parked in back, to neighborhood petitions and a yard sale), I connected with Susan (??) Bennett and was invited to their home (at the time, I believe it was referred to as The Bennett Building). I quite literally went to their home the night before moving to Atlanta. I wish I had had more time to get to know them, and the house. I have always regretted not having a camera with me as I had no idea the treasures I would see inside. We sat for a long time with their mastiffs on the front porch, drinking gin and tonics. They invited me in (I had a friend along). The house was piled high with newspapers and other random things. Then Gilbert showed me a photo from the 1800s (?) of an aqueduct with a keystone…then pointed up to the keystone in your video (@6:24). Then we got to spend time around the spring, whispering to one another. I will never forget that visit or the house. Coincidentally, I married a Bennett. :) I’m so glad to know this house is being restored. What a treasure.
