I don't agree. It's not a clean strike but it does hit the men. Eiga Sensei has even acknowledged this himself since then. Besides awarding an ippon is about more than just striking the Kendogu. So while the strike wasn't bang on, the opportunity was and it would have sounded and looked very convincing to the shinpan. I think considering the entire picture/ scenario the decision is acceptable. Not perfect but acceptable. I think most of us if put in the same position would have also been convinced it was men and raised our flags. It's easy to critique their efforts with the benefit of camera angles and slow motion but the skill of shinpan is about more than that. That experience in Eiga Sensei's own words simply made him grow and come back much stronger after that.
@@KendoSwordsman I share your feeling in this. I think it's rightful that the gentlemen above us pointed out the men did not land as you or I would have imagined during kihon. It's important to take into consideration the initiative that Miyazaki captured in that very moment, which made Eiga's rather perfect looking kaeshi do appear as a reactionary hit - as oppose to an offensive hit. Kaeshi do is an offensive attack because your goal is to lead your opponent into committing a men attack. That lead was diminished by Miyazaki as he captured the initiative instead of being baited by Eiga. Eiga did say in the documentary later that he carefully calculated his moves against Miyazaki where Miyazaki most likely just playing as himself.

面返し小手・・当たってないので解説はスローで触れず・・審判の手が一人上がらなかったのは、目前できちんと見えていたから。宮崎さんは一本のタイミングとるのが実にうまい。手首が柔らかいんだね。これも実力のうちか。

5:40 that kote strike looks and sound like it strikes the Shinai only, but then slow mo shows it is a perfect kote. He is so fast that the 20 fps camera cannot capture the strike at all.
18:32の宮﨑さんのメンは、とにかく凄かった。会場に高校生の時に見に行ったが、早すぎて綺麗すぎて、決まらなかったのに感動した。
