Your Minutes to Die video is one the most awesome projects that you've ever done! I have watched it several times and used it for presentations to EMS staff in the NW Province of South Africa on snakebite to highlight the problem in Africa. In SA snakebite is not as bad as elsewhere in Africa with less than 50 deaths annually. The majority of the serious bites are cytotoxic in nature with a certain amount of grace period before definitive treatment needs to be given.

Congratulations dear Prof. Alan for this incredible book! It was a great pleasure for me to work with someone like you for 11 years (from 2007 to 2016), with such experience in NTDs, especially schistosomiasis. Like many other NTD experts in sub-Saharan Africa, I am grateful to have worked with you from my first contact with NTDs at the Access Project/Columbia University and to have had many opportunities and your guidance that has endeared me and kept me in this career. I wish you a long and happy life, in a happy family.

I have no strong views on this issue, but it seems to me that Tim Allen is mischaracterizing the debate in several ways: 1. Allen says that the re-analysis of Miguel and Kremer's paper showed that "the econometrics in it was wrong" and that "there was almost no effect from the deworming from the data presented by Miguel and Kremer". However, on the contrary the re-analysis actually confirmed many of Miguel and Kremer's results. For instance, the authors state that their re-analysis of Miguel and Kremer’s data provides “evidence for a reduction in roundworm and whipworm infection" and “some evidence, but with high risk of bias, that a school-based drug-treatment and health-education intervention improved school attendance". 2. Allen says that some economists initially “jumped to the defence of Miguel and Kremer”, but that two leading economists - one of them being Chris Blattman - have “stepped back from it”. Furthermore he says that Blattman’s post “The 10 things I learned in the trenches of the Worm Wars” describes his ”changing perception of the data sets and the implication of them”. As a listener, this gives the impression that Blattman no longer accepts Miguel and Kremer’s results. Nevertheless, if one bothers to read Blattman’s post he writes that his “conclusion is that the Kenya deworming results are relatively robust”. In a post from the day before, he writes that ”to be quite frank, you have throw so much crazy sh*t at Miguel-Kremer to make the result go away that I believe the result even more than when I started” (although he also acknowledges that the study has some serious problems). In other words, this talk seems to seriously mischaracterize the current state of the debate, at least concerning Miguel and Kremer’s paper. Personally, I found David Roodman’s discussion on the Rationally Speaking Podcast far more helpful and interesting: rationallyspeakingpodcast.org/show/rs-180-david-roodman-on-the-worm-wars.html

Leishmaniasis hijacks your white blood cells to replicate itself. The more white blood cells available the bigger the lesion gets. Oral Cortisol steroids do a great job of shutting down the production of white blood cells and stopping Leishmaniasis within hours. I had it and lived to tell about it.
