Dean Barber
United States
Приєднався 9 лип 2011
I am Dean Barber and I play old-time music, the precursor or parent music to bluegrass. I play clawhammer banjo and guitar, and I like to sing despite my voice. That proves that I am not too proud.. Thank you for visiting.
Way Downtown
When I think of this song, I think of Doc Watson. I still miss his great musical voice.
Recorded by Uncle Dave Macon in 1926, the song incorporates lyrics and melody from several traditional sources. It is known by various other titles including "Late Last Night," "Way Down Town," and "Slippin' and A-Sliding with My New Shoes On."

Deep Ellum Blues
Переглядів 1703 роки тому
Established in 1873, Deep Ellum is one of the most historically and culturally significant neighborhoods in Dallas. It sits about 10 miles from where I live. It was originally called Deep Elm as much of the activity centered around Elm Street just east of downtown Dallas, but early residents called it Deep Ellum and the name stuck. Henry Ford selected Deep Ellum in 1914 as the site for one of h...

Charmin' Betsy
Переглядів 1243 роки тому
"Charming Betsy" is very old song shared by both black and white traditions. Louise Rand Bascom, in an essay in the Journal of American Folklore Apr-June 1909, dated the song back into the 19th century. There is a possible link with a civil war song about Castle Thunder, a provost prison in Virginia. Early recordings were made in the 20s by white artists such as Fiddlin' John Carson, Land Norri...
Walkin' In My Sleep
Переглядів 1163 роки тому
Walking in My Sleep is an adaptation of Shear Em and has been traced the song back to the Civil War Period 1864. Fiddlin' Arthur Smith in 1937 tried to copyright the song, but since it was recorded by the Dixie Reelers in 1936, his claims to the song lack merit.
Midnight Special
Переглядів 4364 роки тому
Sociologist Howard W. Odum quoted a couple of verses from Midnight Special in a book published in 1911. The song in its entirety was first published in 1923 in "Adventure" magazine, in a letter adressed to Robert W. Gordon, who wrote a column "Old Songs That Men Have Sung." Midnight Special was first commercially recorded on the OKeh label in 1926 as "Pistol Pete's Midnight Special" by Dave "Pi...
Prohibition is a Failure
Переглядів 2264 роки тому
The song "Prohibition is a Failure" was first recorded in 1930 by the Lowe Stokes' Potlickers. It was included in the 1962 album by the New Lost City Ramblers called "American Moonshine and Prohibition Songs." The national prohibition of alcohol, which ran from 1920 to 1933, was ostensibly undertaken to reduce crime and corruption, solve social problems, reduce the tax burden created by prisons...
Rally Round This Land

This is a mashup, a merger, of two old songs. Something a little different. I hope you like it. Oh, by the way, I recorded this out on my porch in Dallas where the temperature was in the high 90s.
Die in the Pig Pen Fighting
Переглядів 2204 роки тому
"Die in the Pig Pen Fighting" is a song from the book Negro Folk Rymes (Wise and Otherwise) published in 1922. The book (not the song) was written by Thomas Talley (October 9, 1870 - July 14, 1952), a chemistry professor at Fisk University who began collecting rural black folk songs later in his life. Talley's collection contained 349 secular folksongs and spirituals and was seen at the time as...
East Va Blues No 2
Переглядів 924 роки тому
First take of East Virginia Blues No. 2, with some minor lyric muffs. It's a song recorded by the Carter Family on May 8, 1934 in Camden, N.J. A.P. Carter did not compose it, but likely collected during in his ramblings. I've recorded another version of East Virginia Blues with completely different lyrics in the key of D. I'm doing EVB No. 2 in the key of G.
Got the Jake Leg, Too
Переглядів 4844 роки тому
Jamaica ginger extract, commonly referred to as "Jake," was a late 19th-century patent medicine that provided a convenient way to obtain alcohol during Prohibition, since it contained approximately 70% to 80% ethanol by weight. It turns out that this concoction caused neurological damage to many of its users. Some victims could walk, but they had no control over the muscles which would normally...
What Are They Doing in Heaven Today
Переглядів 1634 роки тому
A sad song for sad times. It is dedicated to all those people who have been oppressed, tortured and murdered for no other reason than the color of their skin. "What Are They Doing in Heaven Today?" was first recorded in 1927 or 1928 in Dallas, where I live today, by Washington Phillips, a black preacher. "There's some who was poor and often despised, They looked up to heaven with tear-blinded e...
Corina Corina

"Corrine, Corrina" (sometimes "Corrina, Corrina") was first recorded by Armenter "Bo Carter" Chatmon in December 1928. The song is familiar for its opening verse: Corrine, Corrina, where you been so long? Corrine, Corrina, where you been so long? I ain't had no lovin', since you've been gone The Mississippi Sheiks, as the Jackson Blue Boys with Papa Charlie McCoy on vocals, recorded the same so...
Cole County Jail
Переглядів 1574 роки тому
I never heard this song until I watched a video of The Ozark Highballers perform it on David Bragger's Facebook and UA-cam channel called The Old-Time Tiki Parlour. The Highballers call it "Last Night While I Lie Sleeping." It's listed in Missouri State University's Max Hunter Folk Song Collection as "Cole County Jail." It's a fine old song and here's my version of it. I hope you like it.
We need some more songs
Beautiful rendition. Song was played to us in class today, everyone loved the song. Keep it up Mr. Barber.
Uh, but that's Speed the Plough Trish is shredding, not Johnny Don't Get Drunk. And of course it's in A (or cross whatever. )

What is the name of this musical instrument?
A great old tune.
Iv always liked this song.
Is that Don Cooke?
A salutary lesson on how prohibition doesn’t work. Could they make a version of this nowadays - the fentanyl blues?
The fiddler does a nice rendition of uncle Dave’s song.
thanks for the great tune. You made my morning smile
Love your playing and singing. Love what you say here. It's a small world we share and it works so much better if we treat each other with respect

Dean, I hope you are doing well. Like the sheep of the field, we abide here in the Free State of Winston. I came across your channel searching for the tune "Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dog Around" for one of my grandchildren. I haven't done CW in years, but have been WW2 stuff since 1997. See you soon. Cool song and singing Dean, your video is very well made too!
Dean, you are doing a great job on the this hymn. Some of the greatest hymns were written in the 19th century.
Thanks for the timely song Dean. Although it brings a tear to my eye, if soothes my soul too.
