They ignored him until 15 years past his prime when he was illness laden and overweight

Real Real Gone 2 great unknow song - Natalia (lovely little tune) and with Them - My Lonely Sad Eyes. A forerunner to Astral Weeks album.
not mention Have I Told You Lately I love. I love stranded and These Are the Days
With over 300 songs (Vans words) your choice while Ok leaves a lot of the best and real Van the Man tracks missing., Daring Night 1Beautiful Vision, And The Healing Has Begun, Take me Back, Celtic Ray, Madame George, In the Garden, St Dominic's Preview, Caravan, Tupelo Honey, These are the Days, Listen to the Lion, So quite In Here, Philosophers Stone, Caledonia Soul Music, Purple Heather, Vanlose Stairway, Spanish Rose, In the Daring Night, Sweet thing (live at Montreux version)And in The Days Before Rock and Roll. 20 of his best tracks by far. And yes just because its probably his most well known song you can leave Brown Eyed Girl out and the other more commercial tracks Jackie Wilson says, Days Like This , where God Shines his light, and Have I Told You Lately.
Yep you picked his best tracks , each one a winner in its own right.
I think all of us have our own top ten list of his songs. My ancestors are coal miners from Muhlenberg County. I spent a lot of time with my uncle in Central City when I was a child. He worked as a welder in the coal mines, and he knew all of the best fishing spots on the Green River. "Paradise" brings all those childhood memories flooding back.
This list as all lists are, is entirely subjective. Good list. Here's mine: 11. I'm Not Feeling It Anymore 10. And The Healing Has Begun 9. Hymns To The Silence 8. Caravan 7. St. Dominic's Preview 6. Madame George 5. TB Sheets 4. And It Stoned Me 3. Listen to the Lion 2. These Are The Days 1. Tupelo Honey
Humdrum, Solwburn, DIY and On The Air from Plays Live versions, Family Snaptshot-same-SanJacinto-Plays Live-, Lay your Hands on Me-live San Remo 1983, Hear that voice, We Do What We’re Told (Milgram’s 37), Mercy Street, White Ashes, low Light and whole Birdy and Passion.

Absolutely agree the master of music what a guy
Left out breaking the sound of the speed of loneliness
Lake Marie and Souvenirs. Top 12.
🥰😍🤩🥳💯💢💥💫👍👍
If he hadn't gone solo 1. We'd never have had his solo work 2. We'd never have had Phil Collins solo work and by extension the Tarzan soundtrack 3. Genesis would never have gotten nearly as popular 4. South Africa would still be under apartheid

This guy talks to much.
Very nice selection !
I would like to point out that Janet Rigsbee was the actual name of his first wife. He called her Janet Planet because it rhymed.
thanks for clarifying
Great choices from Gabriel's solo career. Yet there are two Peter Gabriels the surreal frontman of Genesis who wrote many of the lyrics for that band and all the lyrics on their "Lamb lies down on Broadway" , and the Peter Gabriel you so excellently reviewed. He is very talented and well loved. Thank you.
thanks for spelling out the dichotomy, I agree
Clay Pigeons was written by Blaze Foley. John Prine always acknowledged him when he did the song live.
Greatest singer-songwriter ever. No one else is even close.
"Rave On, John Donne" ~ "Wavelength" ~ "Natalia" ~ "The Eternal Kansas City" ~ "Streets of Arklow" ~ "You Don't Pull No Punches..." ~ "Bulbs" ~ "Fair Play" ~ "Autumn Song" ~ "Wild Children" ~ "Celtic Ray" ~ "Aryan Mist" ~ "Across the Bridge where Angels Dwell" ~ "Queen of the Slipstream" ~ "Crazy Jane on God" ~ "I Don't Want to go on Without You" ~ "Caravan" ... to name a few.
If VM would stop creating music and dedicated himself to play his previous albums, we would have more than plenty to enjoy!! He continues creating His art. Thank you Van!
Jim Morrison discovered his own style based on Van Morrison!!! Their last name is mere coincidence!!
Top 5 songs of Peter Gabriel in my opinion: 5: Lead a Normal Life 4: Family Snapshot 3: Intruder 2: Humdrum 1: the family and the fishing net
I am also considering the lyrics. " Book of love " is one of the most beautiful in terms of lyrics… I love that song but, it never felt for me like a Peter Gabriel’s song, that in the first time I heard I was thinking Gabriel made a cover. But ironically, that’s the only of his songs I decided to sing/play, within Genesis’s fifth of fifth and many to many I think " in your eyes " is overrated… yes, it is progressive, yes, it sounds like lion king, but we are talking about Peter Gabriel… what makes that song even better is that it is in an album where all songs are good, but none would be in my top five: " So "… it’s like he made an entire album of Solsbury Hill songs. Any of these could be in my top 15, none in top 5. However, the album itself can’t beat Gabriel’s 3 and 4 that still keeping the prog of an ex-genesis member, but also mixes with the goth rock style influenced by David Bowie. Other songs that aren’t so great but I like, because, of songs that came later on are right in his first album: - Modern Love (Bowie’s wrote a famous song years later with the same name) - Down the Dolce Vita (listen to it, then listen " Eyes of the Tiger ") Gabriel is visionary… Actually, it’s hard not to put Down the Dolce Vita / here comes the flood in the top 5 as well…
Not only is he an amazing singer, songwriter, he is also an absolutely amazing human being. No pretending, no "PR stunts", just a brilliant and true human being.
2 more: Cleaning Windows and Tupelo Honey and 100s more
God does exist! Van Morrison is proof of it! MMXXIV AD!
Whoever attempts to classify Van Morrison's musical production is deluded and embarks himself in an impossible task!! How can anyone establish the order between excellent, superb, magnificent, fantabulous songs, based upon existing album, while the best is still coming???
I would have added 'Lake Marie" and left off ... aww hell, make it his top 11 songs.
astral weeks is the greatest. they struck some magic groove on that
Peter Gabriel is a modern day composer like those of the 18th century. A master in musical composition as well as an innovator. He was "Sampling" music digitally before anyone ever heard of it. He's the Godfather of sampling. It's just sad that no one uses it with a sliver of the skill or love Peter does and did. Also...one the best large venue live shows I've ever seen. 1993, Phoenix Az. A night I'll never forget. Nearly three hours of absolute perfection!
He didn’t write Clay Pigeons. Blaze Foley did.
His phrasing was unbelievable. The greatest songwriter of our time period!
"Listening to his music is like being on a psychiatrist's couch" _ Indeed!...except the psychiatrist is a one of a kind musician!
glad you liked that line!
THANK YOU! Someone who appreciates "In Your Eyes" as much as I do. I've always been so annoyed it was the only single off of SO to not be included in his 1990 Greatest hits album.
wow, what an omission! Glad you liked the selection
The Moondance full album is what I tend to always play when I am doing projects in the garage. Caravan is still one of my all time favs
I have been a fan of Muddy's music for over 57 years and I met him in Dublin in 1970. I only found out many years later that, when I met him, he was worried about where his then manager had gone with the proceeds of his European Tour. See Robert Gordon's biography of Muddy for further details. I probably would not refer to Muddy as a 'blues player' but rather as a 'blues singer' who usually gave himself perfect accompaniment, either with his guitar or his band. Your choices are all good, but I would have more of his own songs towards the top, including 'Can't Be Satisfied' and my own favourite 'Louisiana Blues', which, for me, is the most perfect blues performance I have ever heard. He is my favourite blues performer out of many that I admire, which would also include some of the musicians who worked with him, including Otis Spann and Little Walter. I am also a jazz fan and while I often debate with myself whether Duke Ellington or Louis Armstrong is at the top, when it comes to the blues, Muddy is at the top. BB, Wolf , Hooker, Lightnin' etc are all great, but, for me, Muddy is the best
Thanks for the commentary, amazing that you got to meet him (and sad to hear he was getting ripped off by his tour manager.)
I’ve loved Van’s music for over 40 years, so many wonderful, classic songs. Top of the tree for me, In the Garden 💞💞
60 years up to 2024AD
Such hard choices and in his new Album there r some masterpiece. (If not all). Loved your choices. Maybe I would arrange differently. But indeed these r my top. But I cannot ignore Here comes the flood in his naked version. "The rhythm of the heat" in the live version and "san Juncito" in the live version as well.
What ? No Madam George or TB Sheets, or Caravan ? Just kidding, there are so many wonderful songs to choose from. It's impossible.
Big mistake!!! Van is the Man 2024!!!!!
On the Mark. Into the Mystic got my attention the year I graduated from High School (1970.). He is a genius and a curmudgeon. ❤️❤️
Intruder,I have the touch....
As somebody who just recently got into Gabriel's solo work (having been a 70s Genesis fan for two decades already) Here Comes The Flood was definitely a track I needed to hear! And I'm talking about the epic studio version.
I miss "Here comes the Flood'
Yeah i think that was the main omission from the list
The reason why the chorus was in French in 'Games without frontiers' is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeux_sans_fronti%C3%A8res
I saw at The Lords Club Gravesend in the mid 70s when he was fronting Genesis and making fun of Phil Collins onstage. Hope they are still good mates.
Ha, yes. Cool you saw them in the mid 70s, always thought there might be a prog rocker hiding in there somewhere :)
Thank U <So> much Ged !!! Peter Gabriel has shared his innermost turnmoils and being through Music, 'till now communicating with his unique voice that has the depth of truth... A Real, Regal Artist
Ha, nice use of <So> there :)
Great selection. I possibly would have included Secret World. I find that one very emotional.
Thanks Ian, yes great song
Hey Ged. Are you aware of PG planning any shows in UK or Europe in 2024??
No I'm not, hopefully he is@@ianmccall5840
Hey Ged. Where do we put I Grieve. A special song highly emotive for many.
Reminds Me Of You, breaks my heart every time! He's One of the few left from the 60's still doing it and churning out Top Tunes! The Stones, maybe couple good albums in last 20 yrs, Dylan, is Dylan! Neil Young, still Rocking & Moving, Clapton, again, nothing of note in last 20 yrs, The Who, not The Who! Who else is left from then, doing it at to the same high standards? As The Man sings 'It's Too Late To Stop Now!' Van Is The F king Man!
Yep, not many left. We lost David Crosby recently too, he had a great run of albums late in his career, check them out.
