How can one top this performance with the horn solo played so beautifully by the inimitable Dennis Brain? It was said that Cantelli drove the orchestra crazy with innumerable takes in the recording studio, chasing after the "perfect" performance. This one comes awfully close. He was called "Toscanini's heir." Both Cantelli and Brain died at such a young age, due to a plane and a car crash, respectively. An incalculable loss to music lovers everywhere.

Maestro Toscanini recommends Cantelli as his successor, which is also reflected in the crispness of his playing. But very unfortunately he died in a plane crash in 1956. This take is one of his few masterpieces. The resolute performance is wonderful despite the confusion over the postwar interpretation. It is regrettable to return that he died in a plane crash.

Mengelberg es un director muy imaginativo y consigue que la música "vibre". Muchos críticos lo detestan por su uso de portamentos en las cuerdas (para ser lo menos técnico posible el efecto se oye como un gemido en el sonido), pero esos efectos de Mengelberg son muy propios de él y exigen una cierta disciplina de la orquesta. En resumen Mengelberg con sus ejecuciones tan personales y aparentemente no ajustadas a la partitura nos brinda justamente eso: INTERPRETACIONES de las obras con un sentido de grandeza que muchas veces no se encuentra en las versiones literales de las obras.

Gracias por poner esta interpretación, no la conocía, tengo la versión de furtwangler, lógicamente esta es muy diferente, pero de gran interés, knapp fue de los grandes, esta pulida en el mejor mármol.

Heifetz canta e canta. Non è solo técnica. Una tecnica superba. Heifetz cant piú di tutti. Piú di tutti. Tre o quattro minuti meno che tutti gli altri ma sto sicuro che lo stesso Mendelssohn rimaneva estasiato.

Incredible intonation also. His harmonic and low G string are flawlessly in tune and that's a little unusual. It's a awesome performance.

find this recording is his best of the mendelssohn concerto. convinced me more than the Beecham - recording and the late one. The Toscanini tape has a poor sound quality.

Capolavoro assoluto! Questo è Händel, non quello smorto eseguito con gli strumenti originali da incompetenti musicanti della peggior specie.....

Questa esecuzione è molto simile a quella di Toscanini con la NBC. Heifetz corre come sempre e Cantelli non è da meno. Malgrado i tempi è bellissima e straordinaria come quella di Toscanini più tesa e trascinante

Guido Cantelli was indeed Toscanini's protege and both were Italian but that can mislead. His conducting style was nothing like Toscanini's whose tempi were generally almost too fast (up to 1930s) and subsequently often too rushed (40s and 50s). Cantelli's tempi were in the mainstream with an Italianate warmth.

Me resulta imposible aceptar que en ésta interpretación se "elimina lo patético de la interpretación" por parte de un tal Rob. Siendo ésta obra la que en mi sentimiento ocupa el primer lugar, poseo una abundante colección de interpretaciones entre las mejores-entre 12 a 16. Ésta de Mengelberg, siendo de la época de 331/3 rpm en sus ultimos registros de Mengelberg, a la fecha NO EXISTE para mí alguna que la sobrepase en calidad interpretativa incluyendo cualquier último registro. Agradezco que la mantengan disponible.
