If you write strokes wrong, the whole thing is wrong in Chinese 😅

I know over 9000 characters, Mandarin and Japanese. Watching the student writing 'higashi' broke my spine. When you learn the correct stroke order, you can write fast. Also, when you search the meaning for a character, you need to know the correct stroke count.

I would do as little strokes as possible just cus I find it better to write, easier to memorize and still able to read😭 I always start from the top. On this kanji I would start with the horizontal, then with the vertical line all the way down, then ㄴ in one stroke, the same with ㄱ, the vertical line in the middle and the lastly the two remaining strokes on the bottom.

when I first learnt Japanese, I wrote characters very neatly, but wrong stroke order into Google dictionary, it didn't translate. Then I tried the rright order, then no matter how messy the letters, the dictionary still recognized. GG dict may have moved a long way since then so it's not a problem now.

I'm not gonna say that learning stroke order is a bad thing, but personally, I think learning to write in general isn't worth the time investment. There's a lot of kanji that even Japanese people themselves have long forgotten how to write since leaving highschool. In our modern age of using cellphones and computers for pretty much everything we do, most text that you will ever come across will be digital. There is not a lot of situations where handwriting would be necessary. And even when it is, like filling out a document or something, you can always simply look up the characters on your phone and copy them. As long as you can read, you should be fine. Writing is just an extra hassle with little benefit.

  • @DavidArcher_

Or I could just skip learning to write altogether because I can count on one hand the number of times I've used a pen to write much more than my signature in the past year. Most written communication is typed now.

This is very cool until you need to actually read the language. How are you supposed to know which of the two readings to use? Kanji are useless to know on their own, you need to read them in the context. For example, in the word 火燵 (こたつ), the 火 kanji is read as こ, not ひ or か, and the kotatsu itself has nothing to do with fire, as they're all electric, at least these days. The kun and on readings, and the meaning of the kanji are useless when you actually need to read. I'm not saying this app is useless, it's probably good to learn how to write, but in my opinion it's not really suitable for learning how to read, especially for a beginner. Instead, I recommend you pick up a PDF of a children's book in Japanese, and get to reading with a dictionary. As you get comfortable, increase the level to books made for teens, and finally, books for adults. You can make looking up in the dictionary easier if you use yomitan, which will explain the entire word instead of just a singular kanji. On your phone, you can use jidoujisho for the same experience

An important point is if you want to read handwritten text, where the writer rites quickly, more "fluidly", more cursive, you'll have an easier time reading it, if you know the stroke order of the characters. I can somewhat read kuzushiji as well, because of this knowledge.

I think for people who use roman alphabet this concept can be explained when we have a reaction to someone who writes D by doing rhe ) before the |, it looks wrong to us all! its just for every character in japanese

There's another really important benefit, and that's that it lets you more easily use kanji writing options for dictionaries. If you have a strong foundation of stroke orders then you can probably guess correctly the stroke order for an unknown kanji

To me it’s just a picture. If I drew a face and started with the eyes instead of the head shape and ears it wouldn’t be wrong or make the picture more difficult to be understood either way as the end product would be the same. If you saw the Roman alphabet as shapes as it isn’t your first language in reading terms, it wouldn’t matter if you drew the letters instead of writing them, or whether you drew the M starting from the left the right or the middle and it wouldn’t change how well, badly or understandable that letter would be after penning it. I could understand stroke order if you were using a calligraphy brush or trying to make it as beautiful as possible if it’s meant to be decorative or a love letter. Otherwise it’s just being fussy about a preference between options without any appreciable difference.
