Democratically controlled cities aren't meaningfully liberal. They have been just as eager to destroy the social safety net as any. The problem is that political opposition doesn't really translate into ideological difference anymore. Republicans trumpet crime porn, overfund the police, cut back on social spending, sell off the public sphere into private ventures that price gouge and devastate local economies, and then Democrats identify the problems, go into office, and continue the same policies. NYC is the perfect example. Eric Adams has been as conservative as any Republican.

See, the fact that he's not releasing pictures of his costume makes me suspicious that he didn't pass for "black" *at all.* Maybe it's just my area or the way I was raised, but picking up hitchhikers is considered a *VERY BAD IDEA.* Stranger danger and all that. So add a bad costume to that and he likely set off some major red flags. He probably made people think he was some weirdo pulling a stunt for social media clout and didn't want to get involved.

There's a book called The Voices Within that reviews the concept of "inner monologues" as described throughout art, history, and scientific research. Some people do seem to think non-verbally most of the time. If you shut off your chattering mind and meditate, you can get into that mode of experiencing the world much like a dog would - you see food, tables, and people you love without an accompanying inner commentary. We probably all slip into non-verbal modes throughout the day, but it must be very rare to stay in that mode constantly. I've never heard meditation teachers talk about people with no inner chatter; they always say how hard it is to shut the chatter off. I suspect that a lot of people simply aren't introspective enough to even be aware of their chatter - like a fish not paying attention to water. So they report not having it. Inner monologues, when you have them, come in many flavors. I came across a paper years ago that asked people to describe their inner monologue. Answers included: I imagine I am lecturing another person, I imagine I am lecturing myself, I imagine there is someone else lecturing me. Etc. I'm a slow reader, sometimes moving my lips as I read each word in my head. My mother was a fast reader, and when I was a kid, I asked her how she did it. She said "I don't 'hear' the word, I see the symbol and know what it means.' " She loved fiction - but she didn't read it to herself like a bedtime story. She got the meaning more directly, allowing her to speed through it. Bottom line - it's a fascinating subject that gets to the heart of subjective experience for humans, who are inherently verbal. And maybe its not just us with inner monologues. Perhaps dogs sometimes think to themselves with inner barks and growls; we just do it more often.
