This 2003 LeMond Tourmalet Changed My Mind About Steel Bikes
Remembering Greg LeMond: The 2003 Tourmalet Review
ua-cam.com/video/trc_72hoT2w/v-deo.html
The 2003 LeMond Tourmalet occupied a unique position in the early 2000s cycling market. While aluminum and carbon fiber were gaining significant traction, particularly at higher price points, steel remained a popular choice for riders seeking a comfortable and durable ride. The Tourmalet, with its Reynolds 853 steel frame, represented this tradition, offering a classic ride quality often praised for its smoothness and resilience. This model year fell within the period when LeMond Bicycles was owned by Trek, which influenced component choices and distribution. Typically equipped with Shimano 105 or Tiagra components, the Tourmalet provided a reliable and performance-oriented setup for serious recreational riders and those interested in endurance riding or sportives. In 2003, the LeMond Tourmalet appealed to cyclists who appreciated the classic feel of steel, combined with modern componentry and a geometry that balanced performance with all-day comfort. It stood as a testament to the enduring appeal of steel in a market increasingly dominated by other materials.
Getting your bike a tune-up can improve its performance and ride quality. Here's what you can expect from a basic bicycle tune-up:

Just subscribed to the new channel. As a fan of older bikes, I think you are onto something pretty good here.
Thanks for subbing!
All of my 853 bikes have that smooth/lively/springy/comfortable ride that I love (Voodoo cross, Niner hardtail, and Kona, Motobecane, and Schwinn road bikes). So to me, 853 is a sure thing. And Greg Lemond, I appreciate him more and more as time goes by. What huge impacts he made, and his battles with Hinault and Fignon, epic.
Thanks for sharing!

Good catch
love the bike, but in my latter years , single speed , low maintenance ROCK ON THIS OLD BIKE
Loving your channel. I love the old gear and your play on words from This Old House is great. I have several project bikes that I need to get to and your channel is motivating me. Wishing you all the best!! Not sure where you are located, but if you ever need something, there is a good chance I may have it a box somewhere. Take care.
I'm in Loveland CO. More to come, thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks for making it! Late 90s steel is just outstanding. If you can get your hands on anything Italian from this era, do not hesitate. I have a Colnago "Competition" from 1997 with Columbus Crystal tubing, which is barely above the bottom level of what they offered, and it's super nice on the road. I feel like mid 00s aluminum road frames are underrated, they could be worth a try too, for stylish budget-friendly entry level road bike builds. Looking forward to more build videos.
Thanks for watching!
I've owned and used this tool for +/- 20 years. It is routinely used when working on my singles and is especially helpful when doing some drive train wrenching on my tandem. Cheers.

Just bought a 2006 1500. Love this bike, it’s very fast and well made
Those are also fantastic classics. Thanks for watching.
That bike is light, beautiful, and after your work, no doubt smooth as butter. Great frame and wheelset. IMO much better than the crap coming out today asking ridiculous money. So much bang for the buck. 🔥

What ever happened to that original psa stainless barrel? I know you swapped it at some point
This was in for a tune-up. The owners must have it done before I got to it.
Very interesting, looks beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool vid. I subscribed, will check out your other vids. Have you ever seen a Peugeot U-08 - Juvenile ? I was given one brand new in 1974 , I was 12 years old and too short for even the smallest adult bike, which I think at the time in the US was identified as ' 19" , 21 , 23 and 25 ".... if I remember correctly. I think the Peugeot juvenile was a 17.5 " , 24 " tires , orange , had the built in tire pump, Lyotard pedals , MaFac - "Racer " brakes , a beautiful Peugeot leather seat which I would love to find today, it moulded to you and was super nice, and it had a very reliable Simplex derailleur on the rear, I forget what the front was. Peugeot really built a nice bike for a smaller person , a young adolescent... I put 6109 miles on mine, still have the speedo head. I wish I could find one of those, just to have. I think they are very rare, I am sorry I ever let mine go. Funny how a bicycle can be a thing of emotion. Hope 2025 goes well for you. Thanks again....
Oh wow - I have the exact same bike. 2200, bought in 2001 (in Singapore). I love this bike more than it's possible to say! Same amazing yellow colour. I noticed your customer has replaced the original swan neck stem - I'm still using the original. Mine came with a double chainring, not a triple, which I eventually swapped for a compact double. I upgraded the wheels in 2019 from these same (blue) Bontrager ones to some Fulcrums. And I took some of the decal stickers off - just to show off more of that amazing yellow paint work! Other than that, it's all original (maybe I changed the BB at some point too). BUT - here's the saddest part, I bought it in a hurry in 2001, as I loved it at first sight - and only in 2019 did I get a proper bike fit, and the guy showed me it was too big for me! It's a 56, and i should be on a 54. It always felt a bit big. So now I need to get a new bike, what am I going to do with this old yellow beauty?! Put it on the wall?? It's 24 years old, and still looks almost new. Cannot bear to part with it. Thanks for this video, so good to see there's another yellow classic out there.
Thanks for sharing!
That was my first aluminium frame after 3 steel bikes. Was great really light and moved fast. I got a pair of handmade wheels with black sapim spokes red nipples and white rims 1300gr. Had full campy super record.
Nice! Thanks for watching.
I have 4 "Real" Trek (made in Wisconsin where I live) bikes. I also worked at TREK in Waterloo 2021-2023 in assembly shop on all the highest end carbon everything sram/shimano tech everything with "Project One" custom to order paintjobs. My '83 520 , '88 400t, '98 720 multitrack and my latest rebuild project is A '92 1200 alum roadbike . All found at thrift stores and to me better than the "Plastic hobbykit" bikes coming out now!!!
Great vid. These 2000/5000 series Trek bikes are all-time gems.
Couldn't agree more!

I’ve got a 2005 Jamis ‘Eclipse’ - also a steel (853) and carbon mix - buttery smooth and fast.
When I bought this bike last winter it had been used as a decoration in a home "sports bar" for over 20 years. Bikes do not like to sit this long. Justin the Guy really brought it back to life.
Thanks for commenting! Hope it’s gives you thousands of miles.
7:21 that name is French not Spanish, it is pronounced "vair-sy"
I have a 2004 Lemond Tete de Course. It's carbon and Ti. I've put a lot of miles on it. Rides like a dream.
So incredibly fascinating, that era of steel and carbon frames. This bike is gorgeous and it'd be interesting to hear how it compares and holds up to modern carbon and whether something similar might ever make a comeback and even modern steel frames have carbon forks, no? Thanks for showing us this bike, unfortunate for us that Trek let its business decisions be made by a rider on their roster at the time.
These are fantastic bikes and still relevant to today’s riding. Plus, you can maintenance it yourself if you choose to. Thanks for watching!

Are those levers actually compatible with V-brakes? Ok I see the travel agents in the finishing pics.
What's the frame size? Perfect bike to pair with my 99 Vortex!
Sorry, this one has a new home. Thanks for watching!
@@This_Old_Bike Doh! Well, if you every run across another one. I would be looking for a 58 or a 60cm.
