@@diaryofnk Our son has issues with controlling his filter, interruptions, and raising his voice too loudly (hearing checked out fine). We were wondering ways in which you’ve used in the past to help teach being quiet and volume control? One method we’ve tried is a redirection method such as a juice cup, bottle, snack or toy to redirect attention. Any methods in particular you use consistently? If we are in a jam, we are curious if a gentle hand over the mouth quickly would work? If you have tried that with success? Thanks

I’m really sorry for late reply motherhood got in the way. Parenting is such a demanding and challenging journey. We as a parents do our best whatever is good for our kids. First of all I have to say it’s all depends on your child’s age. How old is your child? If he/she is a young child preschooler or had/have speech delay like my daughter then this sort of behaviour is normal to some extent, as they are still developing their social and communication skills. As for as putting a gentle hand on their mouth when they interrupt or raise their voice I would personally not do that. I personally think kids don’t interrupt because they disrespect us or trying to be rude, they just do it because they might be too excited or want to share something important that they might forget later on or they just simply want our attention. My daughter used to do that when she was little. Every time me and her dad would talk she will interrupt or have to say something to get my attention but I have to reassured her with a gentle touch, cuddle or kiss that I’m still here for her and when she was big enough to understand what interruptions is and how it affects mummy, daddy and other people and it’s rude she learned it gradually plus we have a role in the house if two people are talking the other person has to wait for their turn and kids learn from practicing. Sorry I can’t give you any professional advice as I’m not any expert just and ordinary mum like you. I hope it’s helpful. Plus don’t worry too much they are kids and eventually they will pick up. Xx

I personally think 3 year old is still quite young to master all the social and communication skills as they are still in developing age. So don’t worry he will pick up with continuous practice. I personally don’t think putting a hand on their mouth when they interrupt or raise their voice will do any good. If I’m talking and someone put a hand on my mouth I wouldn’t like it and will find it really rude. Same apply to kids in my opinion. I’m not sure about your son as all kids are different but this method will definitely leave my daughter or my two year old son confused. They will be thinking why I did this plus I think it will somehow discourage them to express their feelings and emotions with me. What we need is to teach them that interrupting others while they are busy or talking to someone is wrong and it upset them. You would want them to stop interrupting rather than when they interrupt and you put a hand on their mouth Right? Because the problem will be still there! * What you can do is to tell him to wait for his turn when someone is talking. * if he still carry on interrupting don’t respond to him immediately. * and then explain why you didn’t respond because he break the rule and didn’t wait for his turn so he knows where he did wrong. * if you are busy in something like work or any other task, ask him to ask permission like “can I talk to you mum?” * and whenever he follows the rule appreciate him complement him it will encourage him to do more. I hope these methods will work for you that’s what I did with my daughter.xxx
