There will never be movies like that again
I wonder what happened to the version showcasing Lucy's later in life voice...it was hilarious!
Love it. The first close up, does not quite match... Charming
Lucille Ball sounds similar to Karen Carpenter in some parts of the song.
i miss songs that start with a verse that sets up the character’s pov
Magical, colourful, and a most gorgeous song. I wish films were like this today.
Magical entertainment. Top notch.
Lucy sang all her songs in "Dance, Girl, Dance (1940)
Lucy didn't sing bad here. She pretended to sing bad in I Love Lucy. She also sang with her real voice in Mame, but her voice was a lot deeper. Smoking damaged her voice. I remember first watching this movie in 2011 & Forever Darling in 2011. I got their movie collection for Christmas that year.
71 years old and still a gem
I was impressed by how June Allyson kept up with the twin brothers. Quite enjoyable and entertaining.
Good days in USA 🇺🇸 ..
I wish they made movies like this today!

Why is there so little on the web of Anne's Southern a beautiful wonderful performer and there's nothing here a couple of clips that's it I know she made a lot of movies why don't they put some on here for people who enjoy enjoy. I'm tired of clips clips
'Blind Date' from 1934 (full movie) is on Silver Scenes on UA-cam. Ann gives a subtle performance in a touching film . . .
I don't know what people see in Jimmy Durant, he is not funny at all and his characters always get others in trouble, a real pain in the neck. I liked this dancel number June Allyson performed it was really cute.
I adore June Allyson but the audio sync threw me off
Makes me want to buy a 1953 Mercury Monterey and drive into Yosemite National Park.
Love both of them. Wish they would have stayed together ❤️
Wow! Wow! Wow! Love this!Thank You so much! Judy was one of a kind! No voice like hers and her acting and dancing still fascinates me.A fan since the mid 1960's. This lady still makes me cry when I see her because of her sudden death and me being such a huge fan. There was not more than a day or two that went by in our house where you couldn't see or hear Judy singing or speaking coming from our tv. Love You Judy and Thank You! May God Bless You Forever!😇❤💔
Absolutely Love this scene!! They were so good together….❤❤
No shade on Jane Powell but it would have been great to see June in Royal Wedding with Fred Astaire, if she hadn't gotten pregnant and had to drop out.
Love this film
weird
The movie didn’t have much of a strong or very accurate portrayal of Rodgers and Hart story. I’ve read about there being a lot of great songs and the actors who sing them especially the highlight of the two Judy Garland numbers in the film which all agreed was the best part of the film. They (Metro) paid Garland 50K for each number and in the late 1940’s was huge sun of money especially for only about ten minutes on screen.
Judy is excellent in this underrated film...possibly her best acting performance. But the lyrics of this title song are simply abysmal.
Man. Even better than Ella Fitzgerald. Of course, she's singing the original lyrics (though it was a duet in the show). Some of Hart's lyrics are real jawbreakers but she doesn't miss a syllable. It's damned witty, and that's swell. Grand, even. I keep forgetting what a great dancer she was. Really should have done a film with Astaire and/or Kelly. Ah well. Bit late now.
Shoot, she was going to be in Royal Wedding, but got pregnant. Nothing against Jane Powell, but she would have been a much better choice. Ah well. She'd only have been playing Fred's sister, anyway. It's a weird movie. Trying to imagine her singing "How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Love You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life?"
@@christopherlyons5900 She would have killed it. She was originally replaced by Judy Garland, who also would have killed it. Then Jane took over. It wasn't particularly her style, she was good, too, though.
@@robb7398 I've actually seen that one in a theater--twice--back when New York had a number of decent revival houses, in this case, the Regency, long gone now. It's a decent musical, but second tier by the standards of that era. If they'd had Garland, they'd have put more effort into it, possibly true of June Allyson as well. Jane Powell was very talented, but second tier musicals were her wheelhouse, and Astaire was not as big a draw as he'd once been (turned into a joke in The Bandwagon, which marked a comeback for Fred). I liked Sarah Churchill as the love interest, but they didn't bother to create more than a brief rehearsal dance for her and Fred, or many other scenes for her--because his partner is his sister. It's a very odd concept, and a bit offputting, but Fred's stage partnership with his sister Adele (where they often played a couple) was how he got his start. It worked well in New York and London, but at least they were similar ages. Powell is wayyyy too young, though that was true for most of his partners by this time, which embarrassed him. Powell's very funny, though. Not much of a dancer, but good enough. Allyson is so good here, I'm amazed she didn't get more big roles in musicals. She can do it all. And Fred wouldn't have had to worry she was too tall for him, like he did with Cyd Charisse. ;)
@@christopherlyons5900 The weirdest thing about Royal Wedding is that even though the Bowens are brother and sister, in the numbers that are supposed to be from their stage musicals, like the opening number, they're playing a romantic couple. Brother and sister usually aren't cast that way and Fred and Adele weren't.
@@robb7398 Mostly they played brother and sister, but they were a romantic couple once or twice onstage, and nobody thought much of it. Thing is, as is usually the case with stage musicals depicted in a movie, they seem to be doing a revue, with many unconnected numbers, and there is no story to speak of. (Like we're told there's a story to The Band Wagon relating to the hero writing crime novels on the side, but other than Girl Hunt, try finding it in the numbers they perform). Nobody thought Fred could play a romantic lead. Too funny-looking. But he made a hit out of the The Gay Divorce on Broadway, and after clicking with Ginger in Flying Down to Rio, they tried adapting that for the screen (and the title, since how could a divorce be gay? If they only knew...), and when he offered Ginger a cigarette after Night and Day was over, so was the perception women couldn't find him attractive. (Women in general always prefer the guy who can dance, though if he looks like Gene Kelly, doesn't hurt). It would have been very interesting to see the chemistry between him and June Allyson. But I'd have rather they not be playing brother and sister. Anyway, didn't happen. Royal Wedding is a moving homage, in its way, to Adele, without whom we might never have had any Fred Astaire musicals, since she was by far the more charismatic of the siblings, even if Fred was the greater talent overall, and the more disciplined. While theatergoers were falling in love with her ebullient stage persona, Fred was learning how to be the greatest dancer in the world.
Forget June Allyson, The real untold story was about those "Blackbird" Twins. M-G-M, paid out a lot of hush money even before the film was release.
Can’t go wrong with any number from Words and Music. :)
Absolutely. Tunesmiths of the highest order.
Thou swell! Thou witty! Thou sweet! Thou grand! Wouldst kiss me pretty? Wouldst hold my hand? Both thine eyes are cute too; What they do to me. Hear me holler I choose a Sweet lollapaloosa in thee. I'd feel so rich in a hut for two; Two rooms and a kitchen I'm sure would do; Give me just a plot of, Not a lot of land, And Thou swell! Thou Witty! Thou Grand! Last

Thanks.
Words and Music is an incredible MGM muscial! Talent overload and so many great musical numbers!
Well, the plot is terrible. Completely phony bio of Rogers and Hart. But, yes, some good numbers. Especially those with Judy Garland.
She's a sweetheart. My childhood crush into my adulthood and still. Grand speaking and singing voice. Snd lovely to look at it.
Was this a Busy Berkeley misstep? Filmed in Nuremburg? 😅
Wish the movie could be re-released with this number and "My Intuition" restored. They did with outtakes from "A Star is Born" - so no reason they couldn't do it with this one.
The Blackburn twins - born, Ramon Perez and Royce Perez - were great as June's partners.
She's wearing a 40's dress in a scene that takes place in the middle ages. OOPSIES.
Unlike Oscar Hammerstein, Larry Hart (unbelievably in this case) waited for tunes from Richard Rodgers, and even then seldom wanted to work. What emerged was the height of wit and lyricism. Modest June Allyson didn’t think she could do songs justice, but she’s wonderful. Along with Good News try Two Sisters From Boston, both with Peter Lawford. Thanks for posting!
I can't find another version where anybody else carries off "Hear me holler I choose a sweet lollerpalooza in thee" half as well as her. (Even Ella Fitzgerald fumbles that one). This is a very hard song--Hart was in his whimsical wordy wandering mode writing this, and the rhythms are deceptively complex. She makes it look and sound easy. Then she dances. With really tall identical twins. After climbing a stairway made out of men's shoulders. All the while she looks like she's having the time of her life. Amazing. Great as Hammerstein was, Hart was in a league all by himself.
"Two Sisters" SO fun.. all the way around.. and the Kathryn Grayson "Marie Antoinette" number with Lauritz Melchior is astonishing..
The unmistakable back up work of Kay Thompson. Genius class of her time. Check out some outtakes from the Pirate' It was said that Garland only needed Kay to sing through the number or see the dance routine once or twice. Judy would get it and perform it back and they would shoot the number in 1 or 2 takes,. Dome.
Pre-feminist women were soooo oppressed.
I can see why they dropped it, it came out looking a little too much like a Klan meeting burning a virgin at the stake.
It took me several viewings of this to see that at 4:06, the one twin crashes into the curtain. They kept on going like nothing happened, so this must have been the best take, or the director never noticed the error.
The two guys look very uncomfortable..
Definitely should have kept it in. I think the problem with Harvey Girls is the songs were all just too long. That train number for instance was ridiculously long
It's been 53 years since Judy died of a accidental overdose. I will always remember her. Judy, I hope you're still singing Over The Rainbow in heaven. 🌪🌈🌪🌈
According to Lucie Arnaz, Lucy's voice wasn't dubbed in this movie.
It's Lucy and Ricky, but not Lucy and Ricky. Very surreal. And it's great hearing her natural singing voice.
Many many years ago I saw Words and Music on a real "big screen'" in a revival ... in a real theater. A beautiful print, too. I was blown away.
It's certainly an entertaining movie, as MGM musicals of the day usually were. But if you try to find any relation between the plot of the movie and the actual lives and careers of Rodgers and Hart, it will make your brain hurt. So much so that when Hugh Fordin tried to interview Rodgers about the movie for his book about the Freed unit, Rodgers refused to talk to him.
@@balok63a40 The sexuality of Hart made any remotely realistic biopic about him impossible to make back then.
Frankie Valli.
